Alright, so I got the allies. I'm going to do the anti Sir Robin defence which I have, in a moment od madness, named the Black Knight defence. It's only a flesh wound!

Defend Clark Field rather than Bataan. Retreat *rapidly* to Singapore. Rebuild dead units rather than trying to extract small cadres. Use your SAGs aggressively. Be aggressive in Mindanao. Anything smaller than a regiment is a speed bump. Set up and use stay-behind forces aggressively, especially in China. Capture Ichang immediately.

18 Div and floating sundry Brit units will go to Java. Dutch units on Borneo will be pulled back to Sumatra. (Or the other way round). Sundry base forces move to Palembang so the RAF can pull back there from Singers and make him fight for it.

I think a Mersing landing might be on the cards. If so the Gnus at Singers might get in a few free shots.

Ah, splendid! Bon chance.

Speaking of forward defence, what is your plan for Guam?

Which scenario?

I've never seen PI fall due to lack of supply, the IJA is just too strong for the defenders there.

Scenario 1 (not my choice). Guam will be let go but Wake and Midway will be reinforced - with something or other.

I have.

Sometimes JJ just lets the Allies sit and eat their last rations on Bataan and work through their reserves before attacking. In our 2x2 PBEM, the IJ waited 'em out on Bataan. Final IJ forces deployed were not overwhelmingly powerful, it's just the Philippine Army / Scouts / USMC Regiment on Bataan is not equal to the task without supplies.

The downside for JJ doing this is that it took until early April for Bataan to fall.

Many a Japanese player just sends holding forces into the PI to await the eventual surrender/defeat of US forces due to a lack of supply. A well supplied US force in the PI could cause an undermanned IJA invasion of the PI some serious problems - or cause serious time line delays.

Yeah, as best I recall cap_and_gown did mostly that. The forces on Luzon didn't evaporate from lack of supply, but they were worn down before the final attacks.

But the defenders will give up the fight when the supplies go to zero on Luzon. I was kidding about Guam

By the way, if you decide to get the Wildcats out of Wake, you can rescue the aviation support guys by PBY from Midway.

Troops stuck in Malaya will retreat to the west coast and be picked up and moved to Palembang. I hope we can reduce the place to burning rubble when he finally assaults the place.

Well, Pearl wasn't too bad, was it? Any of those Battleships in real danger of going down?

Manila was a bit of a thrilla, though. Ouch.

Holy ****! It's the Mersing Gambit on steroids!

It looks like a freaking Boy Scouts Jamboree. I hope they brought enough port-a-potties.

Pearl not so bad...painful hemorrhaging of subs at Manila.

The Mersing gambit is what it is, but hitting a port so many time zones away from Pearl is IMO gamey unless discussed beforehand. The thing is that the game engine gives full surprise, so there is no ramp up of defenses for ports hit hours after the first one. I've had an opponent forgo hitting Pearl and instead hit several ports in the orient that are all close time-wise to each other, and that seemed reasonable.

YMMV

Any form of the Mersing Gambit takes you into cloud cuckoo land. It doesn't matter that the attacker may have limited his landings to the Far East. Mersing is just up the coast from the biggest naval base in a large part of the world. It's taking unrealistic advantage of an space-like boundary to the game world.

Harry I didn't mean to be unclear my mixing comments. I was referring solely to keeping port attacks to areas that experience dawn close enough in time to each other to be reasonably realistic.

The Mersing gambit is different. I see what you are saying, but if the Allied player had Force Z heading north in patrol mode with a reaction setting then it would probably simulate real life better. Most of us Allied players choose to do something else with Force Z because of the unlikelihood of the Mersing gambit.

One of those kids who joined the RN before their growth spurt and--due to the diet--never had it? It happened in the IJN, too.
