There have been a couple of comments on turning off grass to increase perfomance. I don't see any option to turn off grass in the options menu. Where is it? Thanks.

Press K while in the battle and then press the corresponding key for grass. I think it's in the middle column and about midway down.

Actually the grass is one of the least resource hungry graphic bits in PCO. Shadows seem the worst.

My rather old laptop had some initial problems, but I got an acceptable result by reducing the graphics to 16 bit, while forcing anti-aliasing through the NVidia control panel and changing the in game settings from Ultra to medium.

Its pretty smooth, but when the game comes out I'll probably play it on my better computer, but even set at 32 bit graphics and Ultra, the game is slick w/out grass. (Backspace key removes grass, BTW.)

Yep at full grass and full everything else I was getting right around 30fps, then I turned off grass and it went to 45fps an occassional spikes to 49fps. My card is a 5770 ATI HD 1g ddr5 ram overclocked a little bit 900 x 1295

I gain over 30-40fps by turning grass off! Any tweak for this? My system is pretty good too:

Q9650@3.6Ghz
Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6
G.SKILL 4GB
EVGA 580 GTX SSC
SB X-Fi XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro
Vista 64-XP

Grass performance depends on what your video card can support. If you have a very recent video card, grass will cause much less of a performance hit than with an old video card.

Well the EVGA 580 GTX SSC is still pretty current and I'm dropping close to 40fps on average with grass on. Is that correct?

PCO is not supposed to be that graphically intense. Maybe someday I'll see it on a high end system and say Wow I didn't know it was supposed to look like that

Up until last summer I was using a AMD Duron 1.2 with 512 ram and a 64mb ATI card. It took a long time to load the game and calc the turns but it worked with medium settings. We didn't have grass then.
Now I have a single core AMD Sempron 2.7 with 2g shared ram, onboard ATI HD 4200 set at 256. I tried 512 and didn't see a difference.
I have it set at High texture and level of detail, AA and AF off.
