I posted a thread in the war room and now I think its a bug. Here is the situation:

1. PBEM Game. Japanese Player selected automatic submarine operation == ON. It is greyed out on my side and cannot be changed.
2. I am the Allied player. Its APR 18th, 1942 and I am trying to get my submarines updates.
3. The problem is that some subs stay in port and get upgraded. But Only 5 at a time -- otherwise the remaing submarines get hijacked by the auto submarine operations code and away they go .. for us to only have to do this again! These submarines were in disbanded mode.

ALL THESE WERE DISBANDED AND SHOULD HAVE UPGRADED

[color=#660000

]SS Cuttlefish assigned to offensive patrol 129, 115 - 134, 117 off Kwajalein Island

SS Pike assigned to offensive patrol 132, 119 - 133, 115 off Jaluit

SS Perch assigned to offensive patrol 111, 91 - 103, 92 off Tinian

SS Skipjack assigned to offensive patrol 134, 47 - 136, 44 off Paramushiro-jima

SS Swordfish assigned to offensive patrol 118, 58 - 119, 57 off Iwaki

SS KXVII resumes patrol, enroute to 128 , 125 near Nauru Island

THESE UPGRADED:

SS Sailfish taken out of commission to begin refit at Pearl Harbor

SS Tautog taken out of commission to begin refit at Pearl Harbor

SS Trout taken out of commission to begin refit at Pearl Harbor

SS Grayling taken out of commission to begin refit at Pearl Harbor

SS Gato taken out of commission to begin refit at Pearl Harbor

Maybe we could have a switch for the submaines that say "Disband and Upgrade" and have code that makes the computer auto-submarine operations ignore the subs?

I woould agree that the auto-operations and hijacking of submarines to form task forces is not a bug. However, the difficulty of enabling upgrades might be a defect unless the functional specification states "if the player chooses auto-operations then the software beahavor will be to render the ability to upgrade submarines as a random exercise in hell .."
