Just noticed four months of 19.95 out of my bank each month. LOGOWNER.COM was the people who dealt with the payments for a website called Free Life Time 3D anime..which turns out to be a porn website. LOGOWNER have said they will reimburse me two months worth. Spoke to the bank who cancelled my card and I have to phone on Tuesday to speak to some Retail section to try and get the rest of my money back.

Not like I have loads as it is..I wondered why my money seemed less than it should be recently.

Not even proper porn site but computer graphics...

Sorry to hear that mate. Hope it all gets straightened out.

Just out of curiosity what's the law over there about blatant credit card fraud? Here, the card owner is not responsible for one cent of it. Sure, it's a hassle filing the report and dealing with the card fraud folks, but you (by law) aren't liable for such nonsense.

It's a strong argument for using credit cards instead of debit cards too. Once the money's gone from your account with a debit card, it's gone. Much tougher to get replaced then it is to challenge a credit card charge.

Yeah mine is a debit card..I wouldn't be able to get a credit card.

Well LOGOWNERS who deal with payments for website companies (their name appears on the bank statement) gave me two months back as a courtesy. I have to got through the bank to try and get the other payments. I cancelled my card etc but have to phone the bank back on Tuesday to speak to the retail dispute section.

Same here, or maybe I should say "used" to be the same here. Banks are getting more hesitant to pay you back, because they are putting the blame more and more on the customers; saying we the customers are not careful enough blablabla. Exactly that is the reason I buy very little online, only here at Matrix and Steam. It's safe ... but only so far.

+1

I always use credit card when purchasing online for this very reason. I use debit card locally, though, so using credit card for online purchases may not be helping. PayPal is better, if the place will take it, even though my son had his PayPal account hacked. PayPal stopped the transaction and he got all his money back.

My daughter's gotten ripped off from someone using her debit card number twice. Once from Minnesota and once from Toronto, Canada. The first time she didn't do anything about it, she didn't want to go without a debit card for a week or two, but the bank gave her the money back. The second time they gave her a new card and her money back. Both were small purchases. The bank told her they usually make small purchases hoping the owner doesn't notice.

I guess it pays to watch your bank statement closely.

Good luck, wodin

Only if you report it within a timely manner. US Federal Law states:

Your liability is limited to $50 if you report the check (debit) card lost or stolen within two days. If you do not report the card lost or stolen within two days, your liability can jump to $500. After 60 days, you can be responsible for the entire amount.

The negligible liability I spoke of was assuming fraudulent (criminal) activity on a credit card. Not a check / debit card. Insofar as I know, the card holder is never responsible for fraudulent criminal activity perpetuated on their card, as so many cases of criminal activity do not involve the physical possession / theft of the card itself, but rather large batches / banks of cc# by criminal enterprises.

Go online every day and check your statements . I have a debit card and my wife allows me one credit card. Sometimes it really sucks being married to an accountant lol!

Hope you are able to get that other two months of charges returned to you and that the fraud gets investigated.

Had a credit card cloned once but got lucky because Amex called me at home to ask if I was purchasing over $1000 in electronics in Manhattan... Card was copied at a Payless Shoes in Valley Stream, NY by the cashier who ran it through a reader and made note of the security code. Learned to make sure that your card receipt reads "swiped", if not there is a good chance that your card just got compromised.

I had our credit card "cloned" a couple years ago. We got a call from the credit card company that "unusual activity" was going on and we needed to check our statement. We asked them to cancel our card and issue another. But, before that, someone in Mexico had bought a burger at Burger King for under $5.00. Once they knew the card could be used they went on a $7k shopping spree across Mexico.

"Unusual activity" to say the least. There were purchases from my wife and I (in the US) scattered among the many that were occurring in Mexico at the very same time.

Always pays to check your account.

Seems it started not long after I let Freja make a payment to some silly facebook game. Well I paid..didn't let Freja use the card. Normally purchases are mainly Steam sometimes Gamersgate and the odd Ebay item oh and Asda and Virgin.

Same thing happened to me a few years back. Someone used about $62 on my debit card to order stuff in my name and then shipped me the stuff. Was totally funny as I contacted the companies that were involved and told them what happened and that I didn't order the stuff. One of them got all cocky with me though and said I would not get any refunds. So, I contacted my bank and had to write a report on each encounter (I think there were 4 of them) and finding out that I didn't order them seemed very easy to me I just said look at the IP address of the person that ordered the stuff. If it matches mine I'll pay it. I had my money back within 2 days plus all the stuff that was ordered. But, they wouldn't tell me what happened to the person who used my debit card number. So, after all of that I ended up with some Extends (lol), Colon Flush (lol) about 600 8x11 envelopes (those are useful) and some other garbage for weight loss. The order also came from someone using my name on Hotmail.com

It being a debit card transaction I was suprised the bank gave me back all of my money. They were really nice about it and no questioneds asked after I submitted the forms. This is why I keep 3 separate bank accounts and not much money in two of them and my main bank account out of state. If/when I get hit it's most likely going to be one of the two that I use to purchase things online and off. My main bank account never sees the light of day online or off unless the bank itself does it.

Interesting how so many off us have been affected..I suppose it's just a case of modern living. When they told me the website and I went to check it out and saw what it was you then think they are thinking "oh yeah right you never subscribed to that did you".

Thanks for the advice etc lads.

Why I love my bank.
Twice they have froze my debit card. The first time I bought commander ww2 from matrix and they thought "matrix" was a bogus company and called me to tell me that this company was trying to deduct a amount from my account. The second time I purchased 64 gb of more storage from apple ICloud . While they knew of apple but not the company that runs iCloud. There is almost No reason at all to have a credit card unless you buy high priced items that takes years to pay off. Also check what interest your credit card charges you.... For example my credit card now is a fixed 3.9% with a 10,000 credit line in which I use on vacation for meals only. I have had this card now for almost twenty years. However when I got this card it was a 29.9% rate with a 100 year service fee. Go into your bank meet the tellers you will be shocked at the service you get.

3.9% WOW that is uber low for a credit card.. fairplay..

Funny enough I did get a call from my bank awhile ago saying they thought they'd seen unusual activity..which was..shopping bought from ASDA, my Virgin Bill and a couple of items from Amazon..hardly unusual!! Yet this happens (started abit after they phoned me) each month and they never bothered..

For some of the inherent differences between debit cards and credit cards (discussed above), I respectfully disagree.

We have a few credit cards that we pay off monthly and never carry a balance. Mostly, we accumulate awards and then switch off and close the accounts when a sweeter offer comes along. Why on Earth should we desire debit cards?

This is an easy answer . Rewards with credit cardit cards come with a high price. You have to spend to get them and most Americans have a high interest rate. This is why you can't declare banrupancy on credit cards now ( a personal shout out to president Bush and you know it's a good thing when Obama agrees with it). Debit card keeps you in place in which you can spend only the money you have. Credit cards incurage you to spend money you don't have. If having only credit cards works for you than sweet but you are in the low minority who are disaplened enough to do this. It's not wise to live on credit cards alone sooner or later you dig yourself into a hole in which you can't recover. You would be better off investing in an IRA than having several credit cards. Debit cards are like garanteed checks.... Even in Minnesota it's a standard practice when you open up a bank account. And remember chase discover card and capital one sole mission in life is to make money off you. Banks encourage you to invest for the future. This ends the economic lesson.

debit cards are great for those who can't have a credit card but want to buy things from the net..also to sue to buy things from shops etc without the need to carry cash. Really it's just a cash point card with a couple of new "features" for modern living. I got one so I can buy my shopping from ASDA as I can't do it physically anymore.

Yes. We use it to pay bills. Every year the IRS reports that people use less and less checks. By the year 2020. Most places will not accept checks as a form of payment. I can't tell you the last time I wrote out a check. It has been years.

Age old...age old...you bought porn on the internet with your debit card and now every porn site in the world has your debit card number. Good job slick. Honestly people, if you are going to buy porn get a money card from dollar general.

Yes. You're right. It does take some discipline to live this way. But we've done it for years. For us (and others can do it too), debit cards are unnecessary if you exercise some self discipline.

That's right. When they gave us our debit cards, we promptly returned them and asked for ATM ONLY cards that cannot be used as a debit card. They (begrudgingly) responded to our request. We do not have any debit cards, only CC and ATM cards. See my previous comments about assumption of risks.

Banks aren't saints. CC companies aren't sinners. They're just choices. People need to understand a little bit about finance and take charge for themselves. That's the big problem, IMO. WAY too many financial illiterates out there.

Truth of the matter is in general most Americans do not pay off their bills monthly. Debit cards insure you don't ring up a huge bill and then can't pay it off. Every time you use your credit card every credit card company charges a fee to the retailer ....debit cards do not. I would much rather invest in a bank in my hometown than send a check to some company in a large city who could care less who I am. Like it are not checks are going away, it's a sign of the times. As far as the IRA comment... Take the money you would spend on fee's and interest rates and put it into that. It cost me nothing to have a debit card. My debit card is accepted at every single your place your credit card is. It is safer, builds the same credit rating as a credit card.
