My only problem with annual "best of" polls, is when what was released in a specific year can't hold a candle to what is already in existence.

Some of the games on the 2002 roll were in my opinion there by virtue only because games they might be competing with were no longer eligible due to already being from previous years.

And I think some games were included simply because you can't take into account a wealth of negative opinion if it isn't part of the actual poll.

I can assure you, some of the selected titles would not be on the poll if they were subjected to some of the forums I know of.

But I suppose a poll can only poll what shows up to be polled.

If all of the atheletes at the olympics were losers, then a loser would end up with a gold medal eh.

Of all the military software on the poll, only Battlefield 1942 and Uncommon Valour in my experience have rated positive remarks.

Hi

I don't think I would surprise anyone that I voted for Uncommon Valor/Matrix/2by3....oh and MOHAA too!:)

Next year I will be swamped with Matrix games to vote for....just as Erik said I think this year will be a great one for Matrix. Many superb products coming up.

Oh I want Korsun Pocket now!:D

Overall, most of the honored games are good products.
The problem with wargames is the fact, that they most of them are not made for the mainstream players. So during a year, there are not as many releases as for, let´s say, fps games. And to offer some kind of selection, the poll has to contain below average games as well.

Btw, I missed Gothic 2 in the RPG category, an outstanding game, at least equal to Morrowind imho.

I just hope Korsun Pocket will be in the 2003 contest;)

I don't know Airborne Assault nearly enough, but I do know this much, it deserved to be on that list a damnsite more that Hearts of Iron.

I would rather like to have voted HoI as years most worthless game release.

Hi

Unfortunately I don't know much about AA either but it's the game I know my brother will buy for my birthday so soon I'll know.

I rather wanted Total War:Medieval but I found it at a reduced price:) I like it.

Cheers
Dan

Hey U2 have you not played the Airborne Assualt demo even, yet?

I can say this, its a game even Sarge would not mind.

I have only played the demo a bit, but it seems to have a lot more wargame in it and a lot less silly RTS game.

Hi Les

Yes I have played the demo...I am sure I will enjoy playing the game from time to time when I get it. I've heard the next game with the same engine will take place in N.Africa (there was a screenie of that posted on the AA forum) and I think I will like that even more.

Cheers
Dan

U2, perhaps you could provide a link to that screen shot and the forum?

To me the game is intriguing so I am interested to hear your view when you have it.

As for the awards, I am amazed that there is a category for Strategy separate from Wargaming.

I always thought that wargaming came in 2 major types; Strategic and Tactical

Ive posted this before but its worth repeating.

The reason I love AA so much is for the awesome AI.

I call it a wargame-lite is because you do something wargames dont let you do anymore...play the role of one person.

You dont have to do the work of an entire HQ staff to be able to play the game.

Lets say you tell an airborne reg to attack...

You simply click on the hq of the reg...click attack...then click on the map where you want them to attack.

They will move to a form up spot...send out flankers...keep a reserve...place any artty if the have it...and move forward to attack
3 clicks

some other games would make you go through 10 times as many click to do the same thing

its brilliant

And the possibilites are endless as far as where to move the game
And the manual was the best of the year...a big plus

The only thng I worry about is that armor on armor is weak...but this wasnt the focus...im sure they will improve the routine.

I am very impressed.

This seems to be what I have been looking for in a wargame.

I reckon I'll wait for the next edition to arrive and then get it.
