I don't know what I pressed but I know that when land combat is being resovled the units should NOT disappear from the screen.

What could have caused this so I can reset whatever was the problem?

The F1 key will remove units from the map (or put them back). During the invasion phase, there are times when you won't see units on the map in order to preserve FOW.

Okay I'm not playing with FOW but they DID disappear during the Sicily invasion so that makes sense then and I'm relieved I didn't hose anything.
