Well, one day there will be a book titled "Japanese at War: 1931-1973" to account for all those Pacific island stragglers.

BTW, how about "Pirates of the Pacific" with Jap stragglers enjoying their rusted Es and TBs in some idyllic Tortaga in Bougainville? Ghost ships, midnight banzai charges in tattered clothes, abandoned German merchant cruisers... Johnny Depp reporting for duty!

First congrats for the achievement !

I checked it out, it says Hardcover: 176 pages

How can one cover this large time span on so few pages, I excpected 500 or so :)

I'd really like to read something NOT war oriented that just focuses on the transformations/rebuilding of Japanese society after the war . . . and something written fairly recently so as to have the benefit of hindsight about what the Bushido society has become

Can you imagine if a time traveller went back to Japan 1930s and showed stuff like that to the Emperor/Cabinet and told them: if you wage war, this will be the legacy you leave: you will transform the Land of the Rising Sun into a strange hybrid of Western "weakness."

Any suggestions?

Have you read Embracing Defeat? It's probably not the long-term transformation book you are looking for, but a very good book on Japan post-surrender.

Plus amazon, etc. are always willing to suggest "related" so just knowing one good title can be the key to the whole Cornucopia. Thanks Anachro!

Hopefully wife and I will do a vacation trip to Japan in the next few years so I figure now is the time to start reading up (and getting a Rosetta Stone install).

Also start saving money for the visit- Japan is expensive real estate and therefore expensive hotels, food, fuel, etc. But electronics should be relatively cheap.

"Embracing Defeat" is a great book. I read a friend's copy a while back and am thinking that may be one I have to buy for the library.

Can anyone comment on the OP book?
