In my last game I bought some heavy tanks however, when I was able to deploy them the projected results against both Russian infantry and tanks was poor, much poorer than my regular panzers. Any advice on the best use of heavy tanks? Thanks in advance!!!

You may check the properties of tanks, heavy tanks and infantry by right click of the units. Of course you have to watch experience too. How was the supply of your fresh deployed heavy tanks. Heavy tanks are strong but not an all killing unit at all circumstances

Thanks. I think the issue may be experience. My regular panzers were fighting since 39 so probably have a lot more ability by 43. Maybe I need to take some losses with the heavy tanks to build up combat ability.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the best way to build experience is to do a lot of damage without taking any. So picking easy fights is the best way to build experience. You can see how much you've accumulated in the dots on the markers and insignias which gradually fill in brighter under the properties.

Question for the devs regarding building experience: is doing for example, 3 damage (and taking none) to a garrison equal to the same outcome versus an Army or Tank?

You are correct, and the experience gains are such that you will receive some experience just for being involved in a combat (typically 0.15) with that again as a bonus if the unit you destroy the unit you are in combat with.

So a Tank or Heavy Tank unit that is mopping up some weakened enemy units could accumulate some experience pretty quickly.

Thank Bill. Does the unittype you're in combat with impact the amount of experience gained?

For instance, do you gain the same amount of experience mopping up a Cavalry Division as you would an Army? It seems to be that experience increases should scale up when fighting "better" enemies.

No, it makes no difference, except that you are more likely to be destroying a weaker type of unit and therefore accumulating experience that way.

Yep, you pretty much have to hold their hands until they build some experience.
Remember that your other armor units have all been fighting for several years at that point.
Pick easy targets, say after a unit has been suppressed by previous attacks and finish it off with the heavies to make a breach.
