Hmm, I bought that ages ago, when it was first getting developed under a different name (Starfarer) and was still very bare-bones. I lost track of it, and only noticed it again recently in some Let's Plays, at version 0.8. Looks potentially interesting, I'm just reluctant to jump into a game before the dev considers it feature-complete (whatever that means these days).

Not sure it has much resemblance to DW, but does look interesting nonetheless.

I have it. Its OK. Its basically a space trader buy low sell high and kill occasional pirates type game. There are also set challenge battle scenarios that I think are more interesting than the main gain itself. I think it has no resemblance to DW at all.

The combat is direct control of a single ship. You can transfer to another ship but it is not instantaneous. Combat is fun but I don't like the way they did shields.
The game is also highly moddable if you know Java.

Ah it looked like you could control fleets of ships I thought.

Whenever I see anything about Distant Worlds, I read it (hoping it has to do with DW 2). To me, it is probably one of the top 5 games of all time. Anyway, I do not see how you could think this is related in any way to Distant Worlds other than the Space thing. Distant Worlds is sacred ground, don't tread on it with crap like this.

You can control a fleet of ships. Additional fleets might perhaps be possible in a future version, but at least for the time being it's only one fleet. Unlike in a traditional RTS, the ships of the fleet are largely autonomous and the orders you give the ships are less absolute commands and more modifications to behavior; for example, you can order a ship to attack a specific target and it will move to engage that target, but it might get drawn into a fight with other hostiles on the way there, or if it's e.g. a frigate that you've ordered to attack a battleship it might be a bit timid in pressing the attack.

You also have direct control over one ship; WASDQE to move and turn, mouse to aim and fire and control the shield, etc. If you don't want to do that, you can put the ship on autopilot and control the battle more like a traditional RTS.

I actually don't like the whole flux thing to win over the enemy. But beyond that the AI 4x aspect is exciting.

Its funny how different things appeal to different people.

I found the most satisfying part about Distant Worlds was deleting it.
I can't think of a game so many people have recommended that I have disliked so very much.

We have all been there - too many times, right?

StarSector didn't hold my interest. But Endless Space 2 does.
