A new day, a new game.

A game versus Castor Troy, who's been around almost as long as me. One of the good guys on the forum.

08 Dec 1941

Different beginning. All that hits Pearl is a mini-sub, which puts one torp into Pennsylvania. 53 days in the yard to fix that.

KB proceeded to splat Manila. 4 DDs and 10 SSs are sunk. 16 subs are badly damaged and headed to Pearl. Only one sub is unscathed. He didn't attack any airfields, so my Philippine Air Force is fairly intact. But then, I'm dealing with KB here.

Some PTs will try to intercept KB, as they're laughably close to shore.

I'm still taking this game in pieces, doing some of it on each turn. I figure in real life the entire war effort didn't kick off on day one. Per HR, China will be quiet until about February, so I have time to shore things up there. I'll deal with India and the DEI a few turns down the line.

Ships are off to set up a sub base at Midway, my usual forward staging point. An AS, AR, AE and an AVP are enroute. Similarly to my other game, I'll plan to take the Marshalls as quickly as possible.

My two on-map carriers are headed to park south of Rabaul. I'm entertaining the idea of packing a bunch of troops in there. I've no idea how quickly CT will move in this area. Some players head there immediately, others take a more historical plan. I've never read any of his AARs (if he has any), so I ought to check them out.

I'm glad most of my battleships are intact, as they'll help with my invasions. Speaking of, I forgot to deal with Repulse and Prince of Wales on the Dec 7 turn. They got attacked, but only Repulse ate any torpedoes (3). She's not crippled, though and can escape easily. They're off to Soerabaja. I'll probably forward them to Pearl after that. Maybe bombard far flung bases on the way.

In the meantime, I'm just trying to consolidate. Earlier, I played that DEI only mini campaign against the guys and found that very depressing as the Allies. It's not much better in the big game and I'm trying not to wish these theatres would simply disappear. I'll entertain any evil ideas there.

That Japanese opening seems rather weak to me. Maybe he has some really nasty moves set up for the next few days, but those results seem meager for the first day. What am I missing?

The goal sought in choosing Manila over Pearl is the nullification of the submarine fleet stationed there.

It appears to me that goal was accomplished.

Castor Troy is a tough opponent.

Best of Luck to you Mundy!

Yeah, this will probably be a harder fight. I'll enjoy it.

09 Dec 1941

He's pretty much concentrated at the Philippines. No attacks yet anywhere on Malaya. I'm wondering if he wants to finish at least Luzon before venturing further. If so, I could entertain beefing up Singapore or maybe evacuating more troops out.

One BB group is lurking east of Celebes.

I'm slowing piecing things together. In the Burma/India area. I'm sending all long range xAKs to Cape Town, All the shorter range stuff is going to Calcutta, where I can reinforce Burma and the like from there. I could put extra forces on places like the Andaman islands, just to make things painful.

He landed at and quickly took Tarawa. My carriers are skirting by there in a couple days, so maybe I can catch some ships.

With the way he opened the game, I have opportunities to strengthen areas. I just have to decide and act quickly on it. A strong air and troop presence at the Andamans, is very tempting.

I'm not fretting all the lost subs from turn one. I'll be knee deep with them in a year or so. I regret losing Langley on turn 1. I always try to save her. On the side, Trumpeter is putting out a nice 1/350 kit of her pretty soon. A must have model to work on.

Fought off some airstrikes. More beat up ships at Manila, reducing my hopes of evacuating troops.

Sweeps over Clark are starting to maul my fighters badly. I may have to start withdrawing squadrons soon, to at least replenish my pools.

In the eastern US, I'm distributing all the squadrons showing up there. Some were 10th AF, which I'm sending to Cape Town to protect India/Burma. It'll probably take 2 months to get there.

I was toying with sending a bunch of battleships from Pearl to bombard the Marshalls, but with my luck, Betties will be based there.

I'll wait for my other carriers to arrive before deciding how to kick off the war.

Oddly, there's been no Japanese troop landings anywhere yet -- not even Wake or Guam. No clue on how he plans to fight the war.

KB appears to be 5 hexes SW of Cam Ranh Bay, moving westerly.

My minelayers are busy mining the usual eastern ports on Malaya. I'll get as many as I can in before stuff starts to happen.

I had 6 strong ASW DD groups scouring the waters around Pearl, but I haven't come across anything. He must have withdrawn all his subs, or at least relocated them. They're back to port. I'm converting all the Wickes and Clemson class destroyers to APDs. About half a dozen at San Francisco are going through this now, with about a month wait.

I think I just about have India sorted out. I'm sending everyone I can to Calcutta, where I can deal them out to where I want. I may deal with the Andamans next, depending on my PP status.

First ground battle of the war, at Hong Kong.

Saratoga will reach Pearl next turn. Enterprise and Yorktown skirted Tarawa and got spotted for their efforts. CT made some comment to me about being bold with them. I just said I don't intend to lose them right away like in my earlier games.

Bunches of troops are loading up at Sydney for Rabaul. I want that base packed pretty full and to establish a good air presence there. Maybe I can nip any messy Solomons campaign in the bud. I can move troops under Australia Command to New Guinea force at a nice discount, which helps with my PP situation. All the little "bird" battalions I'm getting out to recombine at Port Moresby.

KB was confirmed right off Singapore, due to them encountering a lone transport. Far away to mess with my plans for now.

I have ships gong out from San Francisco to try and retrieve my forces at Wake. I don't have the ships at Pearl yet to do this. It would be nice to salvage them and put them somewhere useful. I may entertain a run to Guam.

In Australia, I'm primarily working out of Sydney for now with my ships. I'll eventually get to where I work from Brisbane, with any runs to Port Moresby being from Townsville. In the US, everything's going out from San Francisco. One of his subs caught a transport about 12 hexes SW of there, so I'll have to make sure I have escorts. Mostly PGs for that work right now.

Good luck Ed, following from the wings. I don't follow a lot of the heavily modded AARs as
they only confuse my current game. Which scenario are you playing?

** DUH, in the title. I will follow along on this one. (face palm)

Don't worry Zulu, I get that way all the time.

Didn't quite expect this. I've moved my one HQ squadron of A-24s to Rabaul. Also, my carriers are two days away from getting there, so maybe I'll get lucky. KB is still about 3 hexes off Singapore, shutting things down there.

I'm rushing to get more troops packed into Rabaul. I am willing to fight for this base right now and can get enough troops there. Unless he lands there in the next five days, I should be able to reinforce. My carriers can probably stop any push there also.

The worm has turned in Hong Kong. I'm guessing a day or two at best before that falls.

Landings at Batan Is and Miri. Think I forgot to mention Singkawang last turn. He's working over Borneo now.

His troops at Kavieng drove out my weakling force there. They're moving to the southern base on the island to get pulled out.\

He took a beating at Hong Kong, losing a bunch of troops this turn.

KB is parked 3 hexes S of Singapore. I'm resting all my fighters there.

Lots of troops gathering at Calcutta. I wonder if I can beef up the Malaya/Singapore defenses. The way he's starting, I'm entertaining such thoughts.

KB has moved down the straits and is parked near Soerabaja, wiping out more of my shipping.

My big surface is currently disbanded at Madjene. I'm tempted to try and ambush them if they get near. I've a pretty good history of pulling that off.

He's just bombarding at Hong Kong this turn. He's gotten frustrated by the fight there.

My carriers are north of Rabaul. An IJN force with a seaplane ship is in the area, possibly headed for northern New Guinea. I can't rove too far, as fuel is an issue. AOs are enroute from Sydney.

I've strayed my carriers a bit too far north, and a raid from Truk took a shot at them. Fortunately, unscathed. I'm getting them back south of Rabaul to rendezvous with an oiler. Saratoga is enroute to meet with this bunch. Once Rabaul is reinforced, I'm pulling them away, probably to Pearl to keep them out of trouble. In too many of my past games, I've lost all my carriers by January.

CT's been taking a jab at me about showing him where my carriers are. My response is that he's making no effort to hide KB either. Speaking of, I thought I had lost them but they turned up 6 hexes ESE of Palembang. I was worried they were headed for Rabaul, which is my worst case scenario. I want to pack as many troops there as possible. Castor's playing without stacking limits, so I can be more freewheeling than in my other game, where I'm being bitten badly.

Got a rare bomb nit north of Borneo. Probably not much.

Got an excellent sub result. Usually early in the war, Dutch subs can't seem to hit anything. This one will hurt a bit.

Bombardment again at Hong Kong. He's also got air power bombing them too now.

Chugged through China this turn. I'm trying to get mega-stacks of troops set up in the more central locations. Also trying to organize the CAF. A bunch if I-16 Rats are stationed in the far center north base, but the bases just south of there have not support, so I can't ferry them south to the main bases yet. I have to move a support group there. 4 hex max range sucks.

Crazy ideas are starting to form in my head. It would be nice to send a giant reinforcement package to Luzon to make that island a major offensive base. PPs are the weak link here as it'll take forever to free up forces for that. I do have ships enroute to pick up the Wake garrison and once I get troops off of Hilo, I may send one to Guam, too. I have other ships off to places like Ocean Island to grab all the loose forces hanging around.

Planes flew to strike at ships off of Singkawang and Tarakan, but no hits, as usual. He's now landing troops at the latter.

Hong Kong falls.

Despite the China truce (until February) his recon is scouting things all over China.

Groups without Air Support moves planes to reserve really slow. You should be able to move most of the group south, if you'll not get many damaged during landing. Just keep them idle. And you can probably just air transport some Air Support. I'm not sure about Chinese HQ situation, but Japan Chinese Command can.
Also, I-15s are surprisingly good against NATEs.

Same situation. You can probably air transport PI units from nearby islands. They serve no purpose there, anyway. You can't usually go on offensive there, unless Japan lands fragmented on several Bases.

Yeah, I would love to make a 1920's WPO push to the Philippines, but my whole starting setup won't allow it. KB would trash it anyways.

Speaking of... They've vanished now. I'll have to be careful around Rabaul. Hopefully my troops reach first. I'll be able to pick up the Lark group in a few days when the reach the dot base down south. I'm putting that group together in Port Moresby. I have lots of cris-crossing searches across the DEI, so I may be good.

Rolling right along. It seems we both get out of work early on Fridays, so extra turns.

The RAF seems to be figuring things out fairly quickly, so this bodes well.

One of my subs actually hit a destroyer. One in a million chance.

Since little is happening in the Philippines, I'm redistributing my troops there to cover the more obvious landing sights in a smarter non-MacArthur way. Plenty of troops to spread around with artillery supporting all the locations. I'm tempted to move all the B-17s I evacuated out back to Clark and maybe start bombing Formosa. I would just love to strengthen everything there.

Japanese have been trying to take Tarakan for a few turns now, without success.

Thanks. Glad someone's reading this.

24 December 1941

Troops unloading at Rabaul. About a day earlier than expected. I want to make this a tough nut to crack.

I'm gathering Dutch troops at Sabang. Ships are enroute to pick them up. I can flip them to ABDA at a discount, which is nice. ABDA won't die in my game.

KB still MIA -- hopefully nowhere near Rabaul. My CVs just refueled at Brisbane. Saratoga is less than a week from meeting them. I've an extra VMF and VMSB on board them and I'll probably dump them off at Rabaul. I'm working at getting Army A-24s up there also.

Thanks.

Two games is probably all I can handle. Glad I have the second one. CT's been pretty cool to play with.

26 December 1941

Troops land at San Fernando, Luzon. I don't know if this means anything big yet or not. Just one SNLF made the landing. I've got troops moving hit to hopefully finish them.

My B-17s at Darwin relocated back to Clark. They're hitting the port at Formosa next turn. Maybe I'll catch some ships there.

A-24s at Rabaul strike at Kavieng, getting hits. Apparently some of his PBs can't take bomb hits and this one got obliterated. Nothing there now, but my ships in the area are spotted. I may have to strike the port there if he still has AVs around.

Cam Rahn Bay is another port heavily used by the Japanese early on. I think it is 13 hexes from Clark Field.

We think alike, BB. They're heading there next, before I even read this.. I was deciding between there and Hong Kong.

Slow on my reporting. I ran off to the rifle range right after kicking off the last turn. CT's keeping up a quick pace, which I'm enjoying. We'll probably be into late 1944 within a year.

28 December 1941

Messy day.

I hit Takao for two days. Better results on the first, as he probably pulled ships out after that one.

A big IJN cruiser force swept into the Rabaul area, pretty much torching all my transports. My escorting cruisers got some hits in before succumbing, but it was pretty one sided. I'm making an effort not to completely trash Australia's shipping like I usually do.

My airpower does get some revenge, with my Army planes doing better that expected..

He'll probably pull his ships back at this point. My carriers are returning to Brisbane. Saratoga should get there about the same time. Yorktown will arrive in San Diego in 2 days and I'll have her join the rest. I can't remember but I think she's still carrying SBCs on board. The Vindicators on Lex are now at Rabaul. The VMF on Sara flew to Port Moresby as they can't quite reach Rabaul. I'm shipping a base unit up there, as they're short on air support there. Once his cruisers clear out, I'll hit the port at Kavieng, in case any AVs are parked there, which there probably are. KB's been MIA and I highly suspect they're heading this way.

Once I can free up enough units, I'll kick off a Marshalls campaign as soon as possible. I'll try this if KB is on the other side of the globe. I'm accumulating a lot of combat capable APs and AKs at Pearl.

Queen Elizabeth reached San Francisco two days ago. She's rather maintenance intensive and tends to take awhile to repair. I'll max her use out for the next 4 months.

An armored battalion of mine has reached San Fernando. I'm not attacking yet as I want to feed more troops in first.

Made a stupid-ass mistake at Singapore. I was loading troops onto ships there, but forgot to ensure CAP was up. What appears to be KB, 7 hexes to the NE, struck and wiped out a bunch of ships. Need to watch everything here.

CT's landed more troops at Tarakan. My coast artillery were putting plenty of hits on his ships, but it wasn't enough and he now has the base.

On Luzon, what I thought was a small raiding force turned into being a very major bunch of troops. I lost both armored battalions in the process. I think the writing's on the wall here.

My transports reach Wake and are loading the troops. I can't dock anything to take the planes, so I have to disband the squadron, losing the planes in the process. I hate such waste. Anyways, I have two good units to use elsewhere. I'll still look at helping Guam yet. I've fixed most of the lone outpost islands now.

My ships are nearing Sabang to take those troops off.

My carriers are nearing Brisbane, with Sara reaching next turn and the rest the following one. I think the KB threat is clear for this area now. My dive bombers at Rabaul are hitting Kavieng's port next turn.

My B-17s didn't fly last turn.

CT's picking up pace now. Landings at Mersing this turn. Funny how my searches didn't indicate anything. Looks like the war going like it's supposed to now -- for the most part.

On Luzon, I'm falling back to Manila. I may make my stand there.

KB's 3 hexes from Singapore. Good to know their location. I can be a bit more free with my carriers elsewhere.

I've withdrawn the B-17 units at Clark. They're wearing down and I can put them in the pool. My single P-40 unit has gone to Mindanao. I'll funnel them out through the DEI. I need fighters badly at Rabaul/Port Moresby, since Australia decided to have absolutely none on the continent.

Sara reached Brisbane. The othere will reach next turn. Looking back, I forgot to send York out. I want all 4 together.

Deciding where to make major speed bumps is always a challenge, but highly rewarding if they work to slow his offensive. They were expandable comes to mind.

A new year. New things.

My surface group at Madjene pounces. An invasion force showed up near Balikpapan. My guys did good. I first encounter his escorting surface group. I have nothing better than CLs, so they did little against his heavy cruisers. This is where I really wish I had Houston yet to give some backbone to this force. Of course, the only ship I lose is Boise, the best of the lot.

Everyone's going back to Soerabaja. I'm guessing he'll bring more formidable support on the next try, so this is probably a one trick pony affair. All his forces in the area have vanished.

Things are collapsing at Singapore. He's CAPping pretty strongly with KB. My planes strike at his ships at Mersing, but what does get through the CAP fails to hit. I'm now starting to evacuate my aircraft. Some can get to Rangoon, the rest to Batavia. Earlier, I sent some of my better Australian troops north to Alor Star. I'm going to send them north through Malaya, where hopefully he's stripped his bases of any real forces and try to get to Burma. Good thing I sent them earlier, as Johore Bahru falls this turn, cutting off Singapore.

He's consolidating on Luzon. Bombers have been hitting my troops there, inflicting plenty of casualties. So much for any dreams there.

I have more Dutch troops enroute to Rangoon. Troops are still loading at Sabang. I think I've finally cleared all the lone isolated Pacific Island of any troops. My one commando group at the extreme south, south of Kavieng is loading now.
I'll enjoy any victories I can get at this point.

KB, parked right off of Soerabaja, hit my returning ships from the Balikpapan fight, sinking many Dutch CLs. One more turn, I would have been through.

Meanwhile, he's been slowly taking all the small bases on the north coast of Borneo. Only a couple are left at this point.

My carriers are nearing Rabaul. I have to thread the needle a bit, as he has a number of subs about. My cruiser floatplanes are finding them for me. They already tagged a transport carrying a base force there. It'll probably make it, however.

I-5 and I-23 are parked about 10 hexes off of San Francisco. I can't wait until my destroyers upgrade with their K-launcher. They're pretty anemic right now.

The little dork has been dropping mines off Brisbane, which my coastals have been taking care of. Likewise, he's been finding mine at Truk, so I'll probably stop running missions there.

Royal Sovereign and three destroyers arrived at Aden. I can probably cause trouble with them.

KB is parked 2 hexes off Soerabaja, smashing the port daily. I think any hope I might have had evacuating troops out of there is fading quickly. I'm sending some MTBs out to try and catch them. Who knows, maybe I'll win the lottery. A newly arrived sub there is also hunting them -- replaced with a better captain.

We've been having our war of mines. Being evil, he put some at Port Moresby, where I lost a cargo ship. One of his DMSs got crippled at Kuantan. Another one of his destroyers ate one going into Soerabaja.

The above is leaving my carriers free. Yorktown is departing Pearl now for the Noumea area to eventually unite with my other three CVs.

A cruiser group reached Kavieng for a bombardment, messing things up a bit.

Guns lost 1 (1 destroyed, 0 disabled)

Immediately afterwards, my carriers struck the same base. I was hoping to catch any seaplane tenders or the like there, but apparently, there are none.

I got a bit reckless with Hermes and had her parked west of Singapore, in the strait. She was there a few days until spotted and the Nells finally got her. Not particularly a carrier I will miss, since any USN CVE is better stocked than her.

A fast 20 kt transport has left Pearl, bound for Guam to pick up that base force. They should arrive within a week. The Wake forces are already unloaded at Pearl Harbor.

A big convoy of xAKs at Cape Town are loading with fuel, bound for Perth. Australia gets a bit thin as far as fuel is concerned. More from the States has been enroute. Otherwise, Cape Town is shipping supply to India.

Nothing's approached Balikpapan yet. I think I messed up the timetable good with my surprise strike.

I've been sending lots of my perma-restricted USA forces to the Portland area in the US. That one AAR where the Japanese grab that base has me paranoid about such things.

Castor Troy seems to have a passive-aggressive way to play. Things will seem to slide until he flies in and clobbers it.
