WE WILL STAND AND FIGHT HERE

General BL Montgomery address to the officers and men of the Eighth Army, Cairo, 13 August, 1942

"...I want first of all to introduce myself to you. You do not know me. I do not know you. But we have got to work together; therefore we must understand each other, and we must have confidence each in the other. I have only been here a few hours. But from what I have seen and heard since I arrived I am prepared to say, here and now, that I have confidence in you. We will then work together as a team; and together we will gain the confidence of this great Army and go forward to final victory in Africa.
I believe that one of the first duties of a commander is to create what I call ‘atmosphere’ , and in that atmosphere his staff, subordinate commanders, and troops will live and work and fight.
I do not like the general atmosphere I find here. It is an atmosphere of doubt, of looking back to select the next place to which to withdraw, of loss of confidence in our ability to defeat Rommel, of desperate defence measures by reserves in preparing positions in Cairo and the Delta.

All that must cease. Let us have a new atmosphere.

The defence of Egypt lies here at Alamein and on the Ruweisat Ridge. What is the use of digging trenches in the Delta? It is quite useless; if we lose this position we lose Egypt; all the fighting troops now in the Delta must come here at once, and will. Here we will stand and fight; there will be no further withdrawal. I have ordered that all plans and instructions dealing with further withdrawal are to be burnt, and at once. We will stand and fight here.

If we can’t stay here alive, then let us stay here dead.

I want to impress on everyone that the bad times are over. Fresh divisions from the UK are now arriving in Egypt, together with ample reinforcements for our present Divisions. We have 300 to 400 Sherman new tanks coming and these are actually being unloaded at Suez now. Our mandate from the Prime Minister is to destroy the Axis forces in North Africa; I have seen it, written on half a sheet of notepaper. And it will be done. If anyone here thinks it can’t be done, let him go at once; I don’t want any doubters in this party. It can be done, and it will be done: beyond any possibility of doubt.

Now I understand that Rommel is expected to attack at any moment. Excellent. Let him attack.

I would sooner it didn’t come for a week, just give me time to sort things out. If we have two weeks to prepare we will be sitting pretty; Rommel can attack as soon as he likes, after that, and I hope he does.
Meanwhile, we ourselves will start to plan a great offensive; it will be the beginning of a campaign which will hit Rommel and his Army for six right out of Africa.

But first we must create a reserve Corps, mobile and strong in armour, which we -will train out of the line. Rommel has always had such a force in his Africa Corps, which is never used to hold the line but which is always in reserve, available for striking blows. Therein has been his great strength. We will create such a Corps ourselves, a British Panzer Corps; it will consist of two armoured Divisions and one motorized Division; I gave orders yesterday for it to begin to form, back in the Delta.

I have no intention of launching out great attack until we are completely ready; there will be pressure from many quarters to attack soon. I will not attack until we are ready and you can rest assured on that point.

Meanwhile, if Rommel attacks while we are preparing, let him do so with pleasure; we will merely continue with our own preparations and we will attack when we are ready, and not before.

I want to tell you that I always work on the Chief of Staff system. I have nominated Brigadier de Guingand as Chief of Staff Eighth Army. I will issue orders through him. Whatever he says will be taken as coming from me and will be acted on at once. I understand there has been a great deal of bellyaching out here. By bellyaching I mean inventing poor reasons for not doing what one has been told to do.

All this is to stop at once. I will tolerate no bellyaching.

If anyone objects to doing what he is told, then he can get out of it: and at once. I want that made very clear right down through the Eighth Army.

I have little more to say just at present. And some of you may think it is quite enough and may wonder if I am mad.

I assure you I am quite sane.

I understand there are people who often think I am slightly mad; so often that I now regard it as rather a compliment.

All I have to say to that is that if I am slightly mad, there are a large number of people I could name who are raving lunatics!
What I have done is to get over to you the ‘atmosphere’ in which we will now work and fight; you must see that that atmosphere permeates right through the Eighth Army to the most junior private soldier. All the soldiers must know what is wanted; when they see it coming to pass there will be a surge of confidence throughout the Army.

I ask you to give me your confidence and to have faith that what I have said will come to pass.

There is much work to be done.

The orders I have given about no farther withdrawal will mean a complete change in the layout of our dispositions; also, we must begin to prepare for our great offensive.

The first thing to do is to move our HQ to a decent place where we can live in reasonable comfort and where the Army Staff can be together and side by side with the HQ of the Desert Air Force. This is a frightful place here, depressing, unhealthy and a rendezvous for every fly in Africa; we shall do no good work here. Let us get over there by the sea where it is fresh and healthy. If officers are to do good work they must have decent messes, and be comfortable. So off we go on the new line.
The Chief of Staff will be issuing orders on many points very shortly, and I am always available to be consulted by the senior officers of the staff. The great point to remember is that we are going to finish with this chap Rommel once and for all. It will be quite easy. There is no doubt about it.

He [Rommel] is definitely a nuisance. Therefore we will hit him a crack and finish with him..."

I find this stirring because with one speech he inspired confidence and hope to a defeated and routed army. That is true Military Leadership. Every individual in North Africa now knew the mission, their part in it, and how it was going to get done. In it, through the prism of history, you can see his appointment as commander led directly to defeating the Germans at Alam El Halfa 17 days later, giving the Army new confidence that would carry it through the rest of the war.
Oh and he almost predicts the date of the German attack, I guess his Intel was that good!

Setup:

Scenario 78
My opponent is the venerable "Matrix Elite Guard" BillBrown. I really do not know how you earn such a title, but ever since my Napoleonic days any unit, in any Army with Guard in the title was to be feared and respected.
Still, only four stars, no Eisenhower I guess.

HRs: Standard 1st turn rules, allowing orders to given to all units in China and all existing TF. Force Z will be on the loose.

- No 4E Naval Bombing
- No 4E troop bombing if there are friendly troops in the hex

- The only thing I think is seriously nerfed in the game is big bombers, dropping big bombloads at low altitude. It my be just a player exploit, rather than a game engine problem but its just not historical, distorts the game and does not have any really effective deterrents. In the game certain aspects have to be taken into account to simulate war time conditions without undue complexity. So I agreed to allow LB bombing of ground troops not in the front lines to simulate air interdiction efforts against troop concentrations and assembly area's. If the altitude used in these attacks starts to drop and really sting may cry uncle and request an altitude restriction at some point.

That's it. We are both very like minded about the game balance and feel there's no need for any other restrictions. We loosely agreed to the standard PP system and I will be adhering to the stricter interpretations. With 20k AV in Manchukuo and 5k PPs at start, there are many options available.

Start Options:

We have agreed to turn off all start options, PDU ON, Allied Damage Control ON, Reinforcements +- 15 Days.
Allied No Withdrawal ON

-No NO, the Allies have to withdraw their forces to meet the more sinister threat. It's actually one of the most tedious things the allied player has to do and with all the complaining I have read about it, I am simply stunned. The Japanese player has to do similar tedious tasks about 100 times at least every other turn.

We all have our favourite ships in the game and having risen through the ranks to become Wing Commander I knew my chain of command and it was constantly drilled into me. I knew the importance of the Queen in that chain and her importance to rally a nation in times of crisis and provide a beacon of hope in dark times, so I will not be forced to sink the Queen Elizabeth!!!
Besides my Group Captain will surely upbraid me in the most unkind manner...
Sorry, what was that? Say again... Ohhhhh, oh, ohhhh
We're talking about this Elizabeth?
Oh F it, Sink da Bi !
(Take that spell check, and don't razz me for misspelling, its the software)

Why should I have a social conscience, especially since my country invented the phrase "Women and Children First". At that time with her age, gender and social status she'll surely be near the front of the line, right behind Mrs. Ismay.

The mod was designed to be played with No Withdrawals so I have to play it as designed. What this really does, besides all the British ships that now remain in play, all the restricted aircraft squadrons that withdraw and disband, take their planes with them off the map. Now all these a/c can be used to enlarge pilot training efforts or to be disbanded and the a/c will be used as replacements. I told my opponent that the AVG will never run out planes and the allies will be better able to engage in more sustained air efforts right from the beginning of the war.

“Tune in, Turn on, Drop out and Explode...”

Monty

Good luck and to answer your question of how one becomes and Matrix Elite Guard in the Forum is by making a lot of comments in the forum. However if you beat him you can brag how you won over an Matrix Elite Guard.

Thx, but you know I need a little help. You know 5 emails and you're locked into a death match with someone you know nothing about. My friends are like we can't do that to meet for dinner. A couple of years ago I saw BillBrown's posts and I am no more informed today than before, and your note has confused me again. I admit I haven't done by opposition research. But is there a post out there that might shed a little light on this, this Ahem, situation. I don't know what the Internet calls it.

We are not going to call this the Immaculate strike, not even top 100, but it’s amazing and points out that maybe we should be playing with Japanese pilots this good. Maybe a skilled airforce, with 4 years of lite combat duty has honed its skills and in game terms this mod will/may model that. The beginning of the end for Japan was signaled by the loss of its skilled carrier pilots: will history repeat itself?

Setup:

Second strike PH. 27 planes, just one squadron, that’s their size. 14 hits, spread among 11 ships.
3 sink a BB, one gets another and then a host of smaller ships, most probably damaged from the earlier strike. That is what you want from a strike, target the main ships and spreading your secondary attacks on other warships, where the damage will be permanent.

Analysis:

I was so shocked to see this happen at the end of a long CR. I saw a couple of CV names flash by so that must be the escorts. I almost think there was minimal flak, as if they were out of ammo, no flights even with 34 min.s warning. People far more knowledgeable than me can parse out whether it was leadership or skill that was most important but the Average in that TB squadron was, was, “Wait FOR IT!”

89 EXPERIENCE
77 All other skills
78 DEFENSIVE

IJA Average

The Army pilots run around low 70's for most of the pilots in exp and main skill. There are about 30 elite pilots for the army and they get spread around. This will be a real boost to fighter strength and the Oscars may hold their own.

Final Analysis

Pretty good all round. Hit a few subs at Man., damaged a few of the 6 DD at Kwang, and good performances everywhere same with fighters. The Pearl Strike was pretty awesome. The Kates split between Torps and 800kg. Vals did well split between the AF and Harbor. Only a Cl and DD confirmed sunk, despite what we just saw in the afternoon strike.
240 planes went down for a 1 to 3 ratio. I lost 20 CV bombers, replaced from the 3 plane reserve. The other 40 was the strafing fighters. With excellent pilots, excellent results right. I knew casualties would be around 50% and they were. So the KB sails with two fighters squadrons at half strength. A little hard to judge the damage they inflicted but I think about 7 destroyed, maybe 14 damaged. I will step aside and let the General state the command position at the end of the day.

“Lads, we have given him a good thrashing. I realize that some of our tactics may seem a triffle reckless, and that there are some empty seats at the mess tonight, but let us each do our part, so that each sacrifice brings us one step closer to achieving my aims and goals”

Commanders Intentions and Strategy for Scenario 78

Intro:

The scenario increases Japanese Naval Assets by 1/3 to ½ over stock and approx. 2000k extra aircraft in service or as replacements. There are no technology gains or non-historical a/c apart from the Liz and an Oscar gun variant with 2 20mm on 1/42. A great deal of power is concentrated in Air Flotilla 21 with almost 2k a/c. The Betty’s, zeroes and Vals there provide opportunities to concentrate them and deter and hinder any allied naval movement in the area. With over 50% of the Navy pilots having elite status, an effective night campaign can be conducted in the face of growing air resistance. The extra CVs will be needed to increase protection against numerous allied CVLs (3 x 2) at the start, and to shield amphibious landings from strong allied naval forces, particularly, Phil Isl., Java and Force Z.

Strategy:

The Allies now begin the game with CD guns and lvl 2 and 3 forts at all ports. The DEI will have to be reduced in a careful and deliberate manner to avoid any prolonged sieges at any location. FP bases will be set up near these initial objectives as recon assets are near searching nearby ports. LR Zeroes, followed by Betty’s will reduce defenses in the area to allow unhindered passage of the amph. Forces.
Singapore and Manilla will be approached in a Historical manner, since the CD unit & lvl 3 forts make Mersing a much more difficult target the first week. Each fortress will be moved on by land with an air power focus on air/naval superiority. 15th Army will have Mytkina, Imphal and Akyab as their objectives, and will receive priority for land reinforcements. Armored forces will be used initially in China and then used to reinforce Java, Sumatra operations and isolation of Darwin...

To make things a little more interesting I have prepared this document and sent it to myself on 5/25. Standard mumbo jumbo here. These are the opening para.s, and will reveal
more as opsec allows.

Speaking of Paras where have you decided to use them seeing that his historic bases are stronger and may not be a easy to take with a para drop?

'Openning Paragraphs.' Para's are too fragile to use against anything but a BF. They are prepping for their first missions: Oz, Burma.
So, can you shed any lite on my opponents gender? With the picture, name, I don't know, we kind of have a situation where the blinds don't match the drapes or something?
Actually, it doesn't matter, I am going to do my best to beat the pants off of whoever is on the other side!

Sorry I wouldn't be of any help in that regard I have never played against Bill. The best way to get a sense is read previous AARs where he or she has commented and get an idea how they approach situations you might try to confront them with. It is always helpful to read other AARs using the same mode you are and since I have never played this mode on steriods for the Pacific I am learning as you are.

Imperial HQ Tokyo

In a rare display, ignoring operational security, Admiral Yamamato's final address to the War Cabinet has been recorded for history, shortly before his departure for
Truk Lagoon:

I've Been Doing This Longer Than You've Been Alive!

An aide was said to have heard his final words before boarding:
"The open road is the only place I wanna be.... YAAAAA, yaaaaaa...."

R&D

Nothing really that hard about R&D. 3 – 5 Fac.s on all main a/c for ’42 ’43. You start with factories already at full production for several models at different years and I leave them. 60 for ’43 Oscar with armor, that is my only Oscar R&D. I really need the next gen of carrier a/c so a big emphasis there.

I see r&d as a 2 yr. planning window. A lot of the key ’44 fighters can’t come in earlier than their engines so you can’t pile on too early. That leaves more facs for ’42 a/c and then after they finish the ‘B’ model then roll them into your key ’44 a/c. Same at the end of ’43 rolling into ’45. Big Tony emphasis because late models are very good. Same Zero, Rufe to A6M5.

No factories will convert to production, same engines. How else can I get to the jets and even better, the twin bladers! I will lose a month that way but I will convert 3 facs to produce the new a/c initially. The mod gives you more fac.s, I don’t know the number, but that allows this sort of strategy, rule of 30 always. Several of the 45 b model fac.s I converted to the Emily. Yes, I would like that a little early, same with Irving and D4Y1-C. It's the concept of using force multipliers. For early 43 you want to be able to use your carrier a/c’s range to full advantage so you need these three for deep search and accurate Intel. Who doesn't perk up when they start seeing the d/l jump. That alone may keep the allied player, just a little farther away, and ideally you will see their movements and start to see patterns, without using any fuel.

The downside is these new fac.s are in Toyoharra, Sakhalin and Takao,Formosa. So they are exposed in the later years, so you have to plan now so older engines/models are in these locations.

12 8 41 Analysis

Port Strikes prove mostly empty, Kwang & Manilla. Moved KB NE of PH to reduce airpower for T3 or 4 port strike. Everything in Manila has hit the open sea, my recon of all local ports confirm. No mine hits.
The gulf of China is alive with Allied TF, two combat TF, all moving in the direction of Sing. Easy kills for Betty and Nell. Several DD engagements go well. By Vigan full on sub, PT boat attacks. Little effect either side, but it disrupts landings and amph TF withdrew. Kwang again loses badly to our sweeps 2 – 16, second day in a row Oscar does well against 3 x layered cap.

Pearl Harbor
The Turtle shell is tough. Bad weather, no sweeps, escorted Vals score minor hits on AF against 104 planes on CAP. I didn’t expect it to be that large on day 2 and knocked down 11 for 6z 22b. Well if the CAP is that tough than day 3 will be sweeps only.

BINGO
(not in an aviator sense)

Lexington takes 2 torps, off Wake Island. 147,102. No ground losses, no soap. I just love this game. The time I try a PH gambit this happens, and right now I would have been a day and a half away. Now I am over 4. So, I am too far to chase, but I will move that way. 1 new CV, 75 capacity heading to Wake from Home Isl. I split the KB and send the slow elements NW, and a fast 4 CV force south around the Big Island. All within sweep distance.

I have a sub near Canton that has 5/5 d/l so there is a good chance that French surface TF is in the area and will sail north for Rendevouz. Tarawa assaulted but all other ships in Marshalls will pull back, small surface TF’s in area will linger to intercept Lex along route south toward Canton. No air cover available.
No Surface force sightings in PHI or DEI. I have good Mav search and these forces can be real close tomorrow. I would like to avoid a surface engagement in these area’s right now because my forces are smaller and dispersed. Except for 1 CV and 5 CVL. They are going to cover the amph. Landings at Manado, Dadj and numerical superiority Davao. First FP base will be set up at Talaud.

The Americans flew uncle Vinny to Midway and hit and sink an AO. Several stringbags flew from, Clark and missed. I have LR cap set up from Batan Isl, didn’t fly, >100 supplies. Looks like Clark will be center of air defense, approx.. 100f. A CVL with S/b’s is lurking near Port Blair. SS’s are sitting in 4 of my landing hexes. I am going to throw in a few SS of my own and see if the high d/l, air and ASW will lead to success. Woo Hoo, sub vs sub and I will be going for numerical superiority!!

12 9 41 Analysis

Reverse Bingo

A CVE east of Davao was hit by a flight of 16 Vindicators with Buffalo escorts, flying from Cebu: 7 hexes. One Hit 6 6 0. I have noticed with the Beta that in a lot of attacks, when there are no hits the last flight gets a hit, both sides. Makes sense but don’t reach for coffee too early.

Sweep attacks are starting to score big. It’s the same pattern. 1 Squadron sweeps at a time against layered Cap. Bottom fighters get wacked and Zero maneuvers out of any trouble from upper CAP. By the third sweep of the day you have no casualties and the allies have suffered losses for each Cap, severe for the bottom CAP, but those are the weakest a/c. Nothing new, but my takeaway is this. When the reverse happens I want the most maneuverable plane available for my low CAP. This makes the Zero and Oscar very useful in ’43.

Losses: 16Z 62 Allied fighter 84 Total a/c destroyed for day

Kwang a/f abandoned and Pakhoi evacuated. We will be seeing the TriColore AF around China for a while. They don’t seem to have many bombers. Continue movement west around PH, sweeps only. I have the K5R doing recon and it shows around 3f 6x, 4x a/c. Well lets party and send in a port strike! I may be fooled, or they are at Midway and I am right. Sweeps and s/r Nav Attack, I have to, Wait for IT. Fast CV TF south of PH has no BB, BC, 3CA its 33 kts.

Stringbags score 2T hits on CL. 30 flt dmg. Same on DD, one T. Vigan landings are now completely disrupted, PT boat encounters inconclusive, few hits. I always love the stringbags, you can count on them at least a couple of times. This time though I check the 72/66 exp of the crews and SCREAM

“AT LEAST THE ITALIANS CAN SAY, THEY WHERE ANCHORED AND IT WAS DARK OUT!!”

"WE'll START THE WAR FROM RIGHT HERE"

12 10 41

The Vigan landings delayed, weak inf. units at Laog, Aparri occupied. The first big command decision has to be made about these landings. With CAP just landing this turn, new primary landings will be directed at Atimonan (lvl 2 port), with the Legaspi II force. CAP will be established from Naha. With a good road to Manila Heavy equip. will land at Aparri.

Utah Beach, Normandy, June 6, 1944

Theodore Roosevelt, Jr.

Gen T. Roosevelt

Excerpted:

Much as in the first World War, Roosevelt could regularly be seen on the front lines making on the spot decisions with complete disregard for incoming fire around him.
As part of the 4th Infantry Division, Roosevelt made multiple requests to be allowed to be present for the first wave of the invasion. Casualties were expected to be remarkably high and it wasn’t deemed a good use of experience to have a General fall as soon as the ramps dropped.
Roosevelt thought otherwise as he believed he could paint an accurate picture of the battle in progress and make any adjustments on the spot. The Division commander eventually relented and approved Roosevelt’s request while stating that he never expected to see Roosevelt alive again.

History would prove Roosevelt correct as the landing craft for the division had drifted approximately a mile south before hitting the beach. As one of the first men off his craft, General Roosevelt was able to assess the situation and coordinate the impromptu assault. He was quoted as saying to his battalion commanders,

“We’ll start the war from right here!”

With his trademark confidence and calm, he walked up and down the beach directing the action with utter disregard for his own safety.
When the rest of the Generals decided to join the war, General Roosevelt was present to greet them offering top-tier information on which the staff could rely.

Early Morning, June 6 1944

Gen. Montgomery reviewing Utah beach reports with staff:

“Hear, Here, marvelous heroism, leadership from the Top, Splendid. Through two wars that man earned his CMO! But you say this was required because they were one mile off course.
I told Ike about the currents months ago, the smallest storm and you have 6 – 8 kt currents that will blow you up to Dunkerque before you know it.
I’ve seen it from the sea, and care not to see it again. One mile you say. I must phone Ike immediately before the air strikes miss by that same mark, in fact, maybe I should make a wager with him? BLOODY AMATEURS!!"

12 11 41 Analysis

Bad Weather, minimal flights everywhere. PH 8z -31f Ftr sweeps. Stringbags lose 7 in flights against Naga amph inv. force, defended by CVL CAP. 2 T.s strike AP at Colombo from "53cm torpedo". U - 125 makes its appearance. Next turn it takes two DC attacks after launching T.s at Brit ASW forces. They've met before, no damage.

Landings go in at Sidate, behind Manado, Davao and Dadjangas, covered by Two CVE. Vinny, with his Buffalo's score hits against lt. ftr cover, returning from sweeps and CAP over landing forces. Mizuho becomes first big loss of war so far, with around 30 a/c. My mistake, it they should have been out of range of land a/c for LR CAP. Well landings go in against minimal opposition. Dadj. falls easy, btn. sized force at Davao to be reinforced by follow on landing of 'Batan Island' SNLF amph. force. I didn't need this for PHI landings so sailed it south as a floating reserve.

Interesting message during CR "Plane damaged by Balloon". On a night mission 3 x B 17D hit Bab. at 5k. I thought I was getting really good at this game when I understood plane fatigue and had a vague understanding of submarine nets. This is new one and can't find anything on the base info. We won't need them anymore as the B17 threat recedes and in a Blitzkrieg attack are too cumbersome to place in forward locations. I really have to do some research and see how I can move these to a much more suitable location. The Emperor's birthday is in a few months and I know he'd just love a little bungalow, beach side place with a few of these. At night, the Southern Cross, a few searchlights, real romantic.

PRODUCTION

I just want to jump ahead to put an IJ Production screen up for everyone to see what the devs have come up with for this scenario. I am going to put in a few comments and observations above the attach. and then continually update this post below the attachment with refined thinking. I already feel the fac increases are low.

The force size is 1/3 to 1/2 larger than stock so that is how I will estimate my needs over stock. There are 3 armored divisions that I would like to get heavy use out of and the extra forces will require a lot more support troops, I am going to try for 50% over stock. I have bumped up Veh and Arm to account for this; 20 to 40 each. No change for naval/mer.
Adding about 300 LI in Korea and HI.

SCENARIO 78 Strategy Puzzlers

Resources are in balance with demand.
All the AA units in the HI at start have been upgraded over stock with one size larger barrels. There are a lot of 88 and 100mm units with 60 exp. less than 25 pp each, and sweetheart I'll take them all. Besides 4e bombers attacking ground targets difficulty with the coding I have, I feel there is an issue with ammunition usage. Anyone trying to hold out in an isolated location knows the problem. Now with bigger guns, I will add another 10% to my forecasted needs.

What is little understood about production, except for maybe Mr. Awesome, is that many of the weapons and troop replacements are driven more by demand or oversupply, rather than fixed production. I'm a little unsure of how accurate these statements truly are, but this is how I am going to handle it. You lose an AA unit in '42, but it out, train it, lose it in '43. The more units I can do this with I will make the Allies have to beat my starting army 4 times during the war. Now the Empire can never deploy large amounts of its forces, in the islands, at any one location but they can deploy the land forces in depth. So I hope to be able to force more island invasions and not worry too much about the ground forces lost there.

I am really unsure if this strategy of higher loss of land units can work, but Armaments will be key, and digging into the weapons pools. When playing against the AI in AndyMacs fantastic Ironman scenario's (great training tool allied players) the IJ player runs out of manpower because of its reckless attacks with low exp units. With my strategy I may have a problem with Manpower. I have to repair all manpower centers in China. On 12/15 I have about 1.1k supply in Tokyo and 800k fuel. Those problems do not go away and I want to avoid hitting the June 42 wall. Several hundred thousand of LI is on ships to forward bases.

I have said this mod is a June 42 start so the Allies are producing a bomber or three a day, and 3 -5 fighters a day from the start. The Oscar, Tojo and Zero will carry the load. I want 500 engines for R&D bonus for Ha -33 and Ha - 35.

I have several friends that have never played this game but check the Scen 78 AARs to see how I am doing. They all know I am on strictest security because my opponent has requested I not read their AAR.
Friend: “Sorry to hear about the Chitose, is that important”

Me ” Your Japanese is terrible, Ya, I lost a small carrier, how do you know that”
Friend: “ The last post I saw someone said you lost it”
Me: “ Wait, someone, my opponent billbrown”
Friend: “Hold on.., no a Bif1961”
Me: “That’s funny that ship is still in the game. Why would he say that? Were are you, hold on”
Me: ”I turn to my adorable but not altogether there biking friend and ask her to open the web page”
Biking Friend “ Oh here it is Cheeto’s, is 177 points a lot? Are you going to lose the war?”
Ugg, later..

Me: “Wait, he said that right after the post with a screen print that shows it sunk, you’re telling me in post 76 he really repeated what the reader could see in the screen before”
A little later

Me: ”So you are telling me that he is giving obtuse strategy suggestions, and commenting about my play without having a seat at the table”

Dear Btd64,

As long as I am ranting a little. My good friend does know history and he pointed this out the other day. For this AAR I do a little research to find great historical quotes. So I was researching some Patton quotes and I found that the quote btd64 uses is most likely a Hollywood quote, he most likely never said it. The main reason he probably never said it is because it acknowledges the skill of the Germans at local counterattacks!

So btd64, feel free to leave a quote on your personal page, but place the correct name of the author beside it or remove it. You dishonour the man and mis-inform the readers.

General Pattons Address to the 3rd Army

General Patton arose and strode swiftly to the microphone. The men snapped to their feet and stood silently. Patton surveyed the sea of brown with a grim look. "Be seated", he said. The words were not a request, but a command. The General's voice rose high and clear.

"Men, this stuff that some sources sling around about America wanting out of this war, not wanting to fight, is a crock of bullshit. Americans love to fight, traditionally. All real Americans love the sting and clash of battle. You are here today for three reasons. First, because you are here to defend your homes and your loved ones. Second, you are here for your own self respect, because you would not want to be anywhere else. Third, you are here because you are real men and all real men like to fight. When you, here, everyone of you, were kids, you all admired the champion marble player, the fastest runner, the toughest boxer, the big league ball players, and the All-American football players. Americans love a winner. Americans will not tolerate a loser. Americans despise cowards. Americans play to win all of the time. I wouldn't give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why Americans have never lost nor will ever lose a war; for the very idea of losing is hateful to an American."

The General paused and looked over the crowd. "You are not all going to die," he said slowly. "Only two percent of you right here today would die in a major battle. Death must not be feared. Death, in time, comes to all men. Yes, every man is scared in his first battle. If he says he's not, he's a liar. Some men are cowards but they fight the same as the brave men or they get the hell slammed out of them watching men fight who are just as scared as they are. The real hero is the man who fights even though he is scared. Some men get over their fright in a minute under fire. For some, it takes an hour. For some, it takes days. But a real man will never let his fear of death overpower his honor, his sense of duty to his country, and his innate manhood. Battle is the most magnificent competition in which a human being can indulge. It brings out all that is best and it removes all that is base. Americans pride themselves on being He Men and they ARE He Men. Remember that the enemy is just as frightened as you are, and probably more so. They are not supermen."

"All through your Army careers, you men have bitched about what you call "chicken **** drilling". That, like everything else in this Army, has a definite purpose. That purpose is alertness. Alertness must be bred into every soldier. I don't give a **** for a man who's not always on his toes. You men are veterans or you wouldn't be here. You are ready for what's to come. A man must be alert at all times if he expects to stay alive. If you're not alert, sometime, a German son-of-an-asshole-bitch is going to sneak up behind you and beat you to death with a sockful of ****!" The men roared in agreement.

Patton's grim expression did not change. "There are four hundred neatly marked graves somewhere in Sicily", he roared into the microphone, "All because one man went to sleep on the job". He paused and the men grew silent. "But they are German graves, because we caught the bastard asleep before they did". The General clutched the microphone tightly, his jaw out-thrust, and he continued, "An Army is a team. It lives, sleeps, eats, and fights as a team. This individual heroic stuff is pure horse ****. The bilious bastards who write that kind of stuff for the Saturday Evening Post don't know any more about real fighting under fire than they know about ****ing!"
The men slapped their legs and rolled in glee. This was Patton as the men had imagined him to be, and in rare form, too. He hadn't let them down. He was all that he was cracked up to be, and more. He had IT!

"We have the finest food, the finest equipment, the best spirit, and the best men in the world", Patton bellowed. He lowered his head and shook it pensively. Suddenly he snapped erect, faced the men belligerently and thundered, "Why, by God, I actually pity those poor sons-of-bitches we're going up against. By God, I do". The men clapped and howled delightedly. There would be many a barracks tale about the "Old Man's" choice phrases. They would become part and parcel of Third Army's history and they would become the bible of their slang.

"My men don't surrender", Patton continued, "I don't want to hear of any soldier under my command being captured unless he has been hit. Even if you are hit, you can still fight back. That's not just bull **** either. The kind of man that I want in my command is just like the lieutenant in Libya, who, with a Luger against his chest, jerked off his helmet, swept the gun aside with one hand, and busted the hell out of the Kraut with his helmet. Then he jumped on the gun and went out and killed another German before they knew what the hell was coming off. And, all of that time, this man had a bullet through a lung. There was a real man!"
Patton stopped and the crowd waited. He continued more quietly, "All of the real heroes are not storybook combat fighters, either. Every single man in this Army plays a vital role. Don't ever let up. Don't ever think that your job is unimportant. Every man has a job to do and he must do it. Every man is a vital link in the great chain. What if every truck driver suddenly decided that he didn't like the whine of those shells overhead, turned yellow, and jumped headlong into a ditch? The cowardly bastard could say, "Hell, they won't miss me, just one man in thousands". But, what if every man thought that way? Where in the hell would we be now? What would our country, our loved ones, our homes, even the world, be like? No, Goddamnit, Americans don't think like that. Every man does his job. Every man serves the whole. Every department, every unit, is important in the vast scheme of this war. The ordnance men are needed to supply the guns and machinery of war to keep us rolling. The Quartermaster is needed to bring up food and clothes because where we are going there isn't a hell of a lot to steal. Every last man on K.P. has a job to do, even the one who heats our water to keep us from getting the 'G.I. ****s'."

Patton paused, took a deep breath, and continued, "Each man must not think only of himself, but also of his buddy fighting beside him. We don't want yellow cowards in this Army. They should be killed off like rats. If not, they will go home after this war and breed more cowards. The brave men will breed more brave men. Kill off the Goddamned cowards and we will have a nation of brave men. One of the bravest men that I ever saw was a fellow on top of a telegraph pole in the midst of a furious fire fight in Tunisia. I stopped and asked what the hell he was doing up there at a time like that. He answered, "Fixing the wire, Sir". I asked, "Isn't that a little unhealthy right about now?" He answered, "Yes Sir, but the Goddamned wire has to be fixed". I asked, "Don't those planes strafing the road bother you?" And he answered, "No, Sir, but you sure as hell do!" Now, there was a real man. A real soldier. There was a man who devoted all he had to his duty, no matter how seemingly insignificant his duty might appear at the time, no matter how great the odds. And you should have seen those trucks on the road to Tunisia. Those drivers were magnificent. All day and all night they rolled over those son-of-a-bitching roads, never stopping, never faltering from their course, with shells bursting all around them all of the time. We got through on good old American guts. Many of those men drove for over forty consecutive hours. These men weren't combat men, but they were soldiers with a job to do. They did it, and in one hell of a way they did it. They were part of a team. Without team effort, without them, the fight would have been lost. All of the links in the chain pulled together and the chain became unbreakable."

The General paused and stared challengingly over the silent ocean of men. One could have heard a pin drop anywhere on that vast hillside. The only sound was the stirring of the breeze in the leaves of the bordering trees and the busy chirping of the birds in the branches of the trees at the General's left.
"Don't forget," Patton barked, "you men don't know that I'm here. No mention of that fact is to be made in any letters. The world is not supposed to know what the hell happened to me. I'm not supposed to be commanding this Army. I'm not even supposed to be here in England. Let the first bastards to find out be the Goddamned Germans. Some day I want to see them raise up on their piss-soaked hind legs and howl, 'Jesus Christ, it's the Goddamned Third Army again and that son-of-a-****ing-bitch Patton'."

"We want to get the hell over there", Patton continued, "The quicker we clean up this Goddamned mess, the quicker we can take a little jaunt against the purple pissing Japs and clean out their nest, too. Before the Goddamned Marines get all of the credit."
The men roared approval and cheered delightedly. This statement had real significance behind it. Much more than met the eye and the men instinctively sensed the fact. They knew that they themselves were going to play a very great part in the making of world history. They were being told as much right now. Deep sincerity and seriousness lay behind the General's colorful words. The men knew and understood it. They loved the way he put it, too, as only he could.
Patton continued quietly, "Sure, we want to go home. We want this war over with. The quickest way to get it over with is to go get the bastards who started it. The quicker they are whipped, the quicker we can go home. The shortest way home is through Berlin and Tokyo. And when we get to Berlin", he yelled, "I am personally going to shoot that paper hanging son-of-a-bitch Hitler. Just like I'd shoot a snake!"

"When a man is lying in a shell hole, if he just stays there all day, a German will get to him eventually. The hell with that idea. The hell with taking it. My men don't dig foxholes. I don't want them to. Foxholes only slow up an offensive. Keep moving. And don't give the enemy time to dig one either. We'll win this war, but we'll win it only by fighting and by showing the Germans that we've got more guts than they have; or ever will have. We're not going to just shoot the sons-of-bitches, we're going to rip out their living Goddamned guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're going to murder those lousy Hun cocksuckers by the bushel-****ing-basket. War is a bloody, killing business. You've got to spill their blood, or they will spill yours. Rip them up the belly. Shoot them in the guts. When shells are hitting all around you and you wipe the dirt off your face and realize that instead of dirt it's the blood and guts of what once was your best friend beside you, you'll know what to do!"

"I don't want to get any messages saying, "I am holding my position." We are not holding a Goddamned thing. Let the Germans do that. We are advancing constantly and we are not interested in holding onto anything, except the enemy's balls. We are going to twist his balls and kick the living **** out of him all of the time. Our basic plan of operation is to advance and to keep on advancing regardless of whether we have to go over, under, or through the enemy. We are going to go through him like crap through a goose; like **** through a tin horn!"

"From time to time there will be some complaints that we are pushing our people too hard. I don't give a good Goddamn about such complaints. I believe in the old and sound rule that an ounce of sweat will save a gallon of blood. The harder WE push, the more Germans we will kill. The more Germans we kill, the fewer of our men will be killed. Pushing means fewer casualties. I want you all to remember that."

The General paused. His eagle like eyes swept over the hillside. He said with pride, "There is one great thing that you men will all be able to say after this war is over and you are home once again. You may be thankful that twenty years from now when you are sitting by the fireplace with your grandson on your knee and he asks you what you did in the great World War II, you WON'T have to cough, shift him to the other knee and say, "Well, your Granddaddy shoveled **** in Louisiana." No, Sir, you can look him straight in the eye and say, "Son, your Granddaddy rode with the Great Third Army and a Son-of-a-Goddamned-Bitch named Georgie Patton!"

South China

Here is a screen print of what the Japanese player see’s and I made one below to illustrate what the allied player might see. No recon, poor d/l no planes flying, this is a poor example, my opponent probably does not see anything. But if in the second attach the allied player did not see a movement into the road below Nanchang. He might try and cut your supply line. The div in the hex is resting moving east, to conceal the move, reduce fat., and get closer, undetected, to this single unit of unknown size. This is a bad example, however, if you apply this thinking to other movements, you can disguise the size of the force moving and the direction. It's the art of maneuver and Clausewitz got it right. Why pay for the ground pay, when you can maneuver and get it for free. I think an American Civil War leader said it. Thomas? Rosecrans?

I busted down the road from Wuchang with two divs. to clear the highway to Changsha. After completing this I rest, moved one div back to Wuchang. Split the 2nd div and marched a Bgde se and sw. Change that, if I only move to the road next to Changsha, through the woods, my opponent has no idea of the size and strength of my move, and has withdrwawn from one woods hex and appears to be retreating into Changsha or its just a HQ moving, and they are making a stand.

The mod gives you several new divs in the China AO. One just won the battle near Hanoi. The other won the battle near Kukong yesterday. I think a couple of new reg’ts are in the Chinese ports, above garrison requirements and they cut the highway. The Chinese player probably see’s none of this.

Gotta wonder if the French shouldn’t have a few recon planes for this mod, to let the Chinese maneuver better.

Japanese Operational Report

Here is a sample report and I’ll go down it, and skip a lot of lines, you don’t need to go through the details; unless you don’t think that this will improve your game, I mean your game, this print isn’t glamorous. But it shows why the Japanese side is so complicated and a good player has to go through this every turn, or its tracker equivalents; both sides.

L1. Probably subs refueling L2 Oops, Do not unload orders 6. Put your naval bombers to work as search a/c. 7. Jake sighting 6 ships subs! 8… Here they come the Manila boys. Not one shot fired north of Formosa and I know trouble is coming. I know today to lock up the gates there’s a storm coming. I mean it’s Dec, of course they are. But now I fine tune my day/night and for many units I may have to only change once or twice in the next two years. Now the ASW ships are given their l/t patrol routes. A couple are kept in ports to respond to sightings. Watch the exp of the crews, PBs are low. The mod has about 20 10 kt. SC boats, with ASW of 8, 34 exp., gotta think how you can safely train them for a few months. (They are you’re example of how the Allied player is increasing his exp, by just convoy escort) Every sub encounter can increase exp., so note which ships are getting contacts and later you can move them to elite ASW TF. The British hunter killer system.
L. middle: D3A1 on Search, ASW, see post above, deepwater hexes. I have been watching this for three days now. They are moving because their direction changes, but I always see one in each hex. Each side has no d/l value of opposing ships. The hardest thing to do is to find out how good that sighting is. The allied player see’s x/x dl and knows. The other player does not have the same info. Even though they initiated the d/l!

The report shows as you go down the increasing reliability of the sightings, at different locations. But wait at the bottom, Ann’s getting reliable sightings? In Amoy avg. 60 exp, 34 ASW. 70% ASW 2k, no search. But wait it gets better. Somewhere in all this I might actually have an original thought, but more likely just a refinement of what those before have pointed out, but no one has put it in one place with an economy of words and posts. Must be the clean air.
The Mod gives you a 36 plane group of experimental D4Y1 Judy’s to take for a test drive. So I want to preserve this unit. Search maybe, but not training, the screen print in the next post will tell you why. It took a while for the community to fully understand not all bomber pilots are created equal. The elite pilots in the group, are DB pilots. You move them to a squadron other than a DB, they lose only exp. The Reserve Pool only has bomber pilots listed.

It’s actually an indirect way to simulate carrier trained pilots and land based trained pilots. That Grigsby guy is behind this! Every game one side has to simulate to the nth degree. "You handle production and I'll do the flight and pilot modeling". They lose their elite status if you get it wrong. I try and move a few at the same exp or DB skill into the Reserve Pool and then immediately move them into another DB unit for training or frontline use. Same TB, 2e to 1e. The only thing that’s really cool is every time I hit “request veteran” for a fighter squadron Santa Claus appears, 89 or 90exp. Note to self third pilot down is bomber pilot what kind?), take down holiday lights. There is no joy in mudville. I told you the Japanese side is really hard to get right. I think the only thing harder to do is play this game in Japanese writing. I thought I would fact check that, but instead just relied on Google search. I may actually be write:

'Japanese/Japanese writing system. The Japanese language uses three different systems for writing. There are two syllabaries—hiragana and katakana—which have characters for each basic mora (syllable.) Along with the syllabaries, there are also kanji, which is a writing system based on Chinese characters.'

AAR INTERRUPTUS

I am on vacation in the land of the midnight sun, and my friends want to go hike a hill and watch sunset. It’ll be a while. No I have some thoughts about the game I want to write down. I type up this whole analysis proof it, look out the window and see a real local kind of guy fishing by the stream. Well behind him I see a muskrat, or duck or otter or something leaving a wake going across the lake. I grab my pole and figure maybe he saw it and will also give me a chance to fish for wildlife info. My pink worm lure, with no spray scent, is not going to fool anybody. Shutdown grab my gear, 5 mins later run out the door, the laptop is still shutting down. Some message about awaiting Windows shutdown because of some Japanese language text or something. See I’m brilliant, I said this would happen, I would never be able to even attempt an AAR using Japanese language with Microsoft Windows. It apparently doesn’t even work in Japanese Arabic.(?) I would have to buy new software, but would I go to Microsoft US or Japan? Would it work on a Dell PC built in Canada? I gotta go fishin’.

In the next hour Tourist 4 Local 1. Apparently the Trout like worms tonight. The picture was on my friends phone and its too large, sorry. A 6 in. trout with a beautiful little pink stripe down the side.

We released them all.

Oh and I didn’t even tell you that I have been getting oil in the water sightings by Pesc. For two days. I can only guess these two boats are leaking and they don’t even know it, or else they are new, transiting? I can’t chase damaged boats, effectively, and I am getting hits scored almost 1 in 5 shallow water encounters.

Yin/Yang well if Army Annie can get good sighting’s lets see what the elite fellers can do. The ASW exp increase tells me something is happening. My heads hurting. I have to figure out a L/T ASW plan now; train these guys, B5n2 gets MAD, all those planes sitting around after Jill arrives, use the Mabel...

Dear Btd64,

I believe you are the lead developer for Scenario 78. That means you have the most at stake in the success of this project. I started this to give back to the community some of the knowledge I have gained in a year and a half. I had a good knowledge of Scenario 75 and was keen to share with you my insights into some of the longer term problems a mod this size has on the Japanese player. Apparently you are not even reading my AAR. Apparently you are actually dissing me on my oppenents thread.

Where is the honour in that?

Here on the Anniversary of D Day I throw down the Gauntlet of Challenge for you to tell me to shut up or do what every developer that has ever worked on this game has strived to do:

GET IT RIGHT!!!
