These guys made perhaps my favorite youtube channel of all time, WW1 week by week. A tremendous achievement. Now they are doing the same for WW2. Incredible hard working people, and their documentaries are better than 99% of the drivel on TV.

Agreed. I found their WWI series amazing and used clips in my classes.

It would be nice to know where the numbers come from.
6 million bags of rice, thats a lot from a very small industry.
I can see sales of rice but they are reported in Pounds (currency)
Australia also sold a lot of Barley after the failure of rice crops in Korea.

But japan was neutral in 1940, why not sell rice in addition to scrap iron, and we were looking at buying A6M2 Zeke's from them.
