December 1942, Yugoslavia 85% Axis. Allies retake London and Manchester (one turn prior), Yugoslavia declares war on Axis, Bulgaria, and Hungary immediately taken out of the war without even the opportunity to garrison Capitals since Yugo declared war at the end of my turn.

Moscow, Stalingrad, Chungking, Canberra, Tokyo, Berlin, Rome all in Axis hands and Yugoslavia declares war on Axis. I needed Delhi and Cairo and then retake London and the game would be over with the UK surrendering. I'm not taking anything away from my opponent who played very, very well but the sheer lunacy of a country (Yugoslavia) doing this is impossible.

I understand why this was triggered but if London had ever been lost this should not fire, If Moscow is in Axis hands this should not fire, If there are no Allied prewar Capitals on mainland Europe still in Allied hands this should not fire.

It is certainly a flaw in the system. I hope the next patch can address this.

Hi

I'm sorry to read about your frustration.

I'm afraid that one thing we can't do is tell the engine not to let this Decision fire if London was once lost and liberated again.

In truth, the Yugoslav coup in April 1941 did happen at a time when the Allied cause was hardly in a good place, so what happened isn't perhaps as far fetched as it might have felt, but I'll have a think about this too.

Bill

I hate to hear that, is there a way for the engine to not fire if certain cities are occupied? It seems to work with London. If the two cities required for victory in Russia are in Axis hands there is no way Yugoslavia would have declared war - the implication being that the Soviets are losing. Another option is to have the DE hit for +50% Allies after the coup. That would have stunk but Yugoslavia still would have been +35% Axis with a 50% hit. The diplomacy was so high for the Axis I thought that Yugoslavia was joining the Axis (I wasn't paying much attention to the end of turn messages). I realize this is not a simulation but this event is so out of the realm of possibility that I was really surprised, to say the least.

Thanks for all your good work!

A dummy type 3 event checking for London in Allied hands in April 1941 could be created as the conditional DE for the Yugoslavia coup decision. I’ve done something similar.

Yes, that does exist, but the game doesn't retain a memory as such. There can be ways around this in some instances where we might use a dummy decision to then trigger later events based on the earlier one, but telling the engine that an event shouldn't fire if a resource was at any time held by the Axis isn't currently possible.

If it was to tell the engine the opposite, i.e. to fire if the resource was ever in Axis hands, then that would be a different matter. It's the shouldn't fire bit that is the issue here.

Crispy's suggestion is one I also thought of after I logged off. What it would mean is that the Yugoslav pro-Allied coup could only happen in April 1941 when the conditions are valid, so if London was in Axis hands at that point then it couldn't happen.

This might be the easiest and best solution, much as I personally prefer things to be a bit more variable in time (the suggestion only works if the date is set in stone).

Indeed, great minds think alike.
