A "furball" is combat between air units.

Cheers

Following up on this:

a "furball" (in TOAW terms) will take either one of two results.

Either your Air Force will take out ENTIRELY the opposing air units,
or you will suffer ENTIRELY the loss of your flight(s).

EG: "Soviet FURBALL" @ (hex location)

look at battle report for that location.
You will see, entire loss for either YOUR unit, or the opposing force from that localized air battle that was flying that mission (entirely computer generated) ... there is not a way to mitigate or enhance FURBALL capability in TOAW that I have found (yet) BUT, it may help to "localize" your air capability to only a few hexes that you want to fly a unit.

Hard to wrap around, I know, and it is frustrating a bit, b/c not much detail,
but w/ drilling down into the battle reports,
you will see which side was annihilated in that air report.

I hope this helps!

It does help thank you! I am still trying to change or modify my thinking regards playing/gaming this game compared to what I have been playing for years, all the Tiller games, all eras for example etc. The mechanics are way different etc.
