I just read of the passing of Bob Hope at the age of 100.

News reports indicate that he died quietly at home, surrounded by his family.

I regret to say that the news reports are in error, for Bob's "family" extends well beyond those who would normally be considered in that grouping.

Family is defined as those to whom one is related by blood, marriage and adoption. If that is true, then every single serviceman, and woman, is a member of Bob's extended family.

While we were shedding our blood, in the dirt and sand of distant shores, Bob was there with us, keeping up our spirits as only he could. His USO shows were perhaps the single brightest point of light for many soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen, as they served their country, far from home. We "adopted" Bob as one of our own, and he, in turn, treated us as his kids. We have lost a good man today, but I prefer to think of his passing as "taking his show to a higher plane", to a place where those who fell can now enjoy his warmth and humor.

Won't you all join me in one, last salute for Bob?

Company!

Hand salute...

Two!

My memories of Bob Hope extend to a time well before my initial enlistment.

He was in our living room every Christmas at a minimum via television (back in the days before cable). I'd seen him on specials and in movies, singing, dancing, or telling jokes.

His visits overseas though do hold a special place in my heart. Nothing buoys morale like a visit from Bob Hope.

He will be sorely missed.

If anybody would like to see the old Bob Hope programs, they are available at his "official" store at www.bobhope.com.....I was able to get an autographed book of his,and by now the Hasbro "Bob Hope" is probably sold out...He IS a class act......
I was never able to see Mr Hope in person, nor was anybody else in my family, but he was sure a major part of all of our lives..
Mr Hope did not have to be over there, where we were, but he was there, and he was never paid for his trips..
Bob....(Bien Hoa,etc..)

When I came into the world, Bob was here, making folks laugh. I saw his "road" and other movies at the old downtown theaters as a boy.

Now he is gone. But I can, like him, say, "Thanks for the memories."

A salute to an American hero.
