I just read of the passing of Bob Hope at the age of 100. News reports indicate that he died quietly at home, surrounded by his family. I regret to say that the news reports are in error, for Bob's "family" extends well beyond those who would normally be considered in that grouping. Family is defined as those to whom one is related by blood, marriage and adoption. If that is true, then every single serviceman, and woman, is a member of Bob's extended family. While we were shedding our blood, in the dirt and sand of distant shores, Bob was there with us, keeping up our spirits as only he could. His USO shows were perhaps the single brightest point of light for many soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen, as they served their country, far from home. We "adopted" Bob as one of our own, and he, in turn, treated us as his kids. We have lost a good man today, but I prefer to think of his passing as "taking his show to a higher plane", to a place where those who fell can now enjoy his warmth and humor. Won't you all join me in one, last salute for Bob? Company! Hand salute... Two!
