I've just purchased DC Barbarossa, and what a baptism of fire it is too ! lol.

Would I be wise to purchase, and play ATG first ?

I also notice from these forums, that ATG has had a few mods. Would I get them, with a Steam purchase ?

I can't tell you if you will like ATG, but it shares many similarities with the DC-Series. I had no trouble going from ATG to DC. As for the mods. All mods are kept (well should be kept) on the VRDesigns scenario bank. (https://www.vrdesigns.net/community.php) just like they are for the DC-Series games... :)

ATG is one of my personal favs of all time. I also like to do a little modding to it from time to time.

My best recommendation is to check out "Let's play" videos on Youtube before making your decision. I haven't bought a game in over a decade without first checking out videos of people actually playing the game. As a result, I have made very few bad purchases anymore. I usually know just what I'm getting into.

Just keep in mind, that the stock game, what players most often show in the "lets play" guides out there for ATG, is just one of the many things that ATG can become. Almost anything is moddable, and the game is also pitched as a wargames construction kit, which means that you need to add that to the evaluation process.
