I have managed to get WITP-AE to run under DXWnd but my question is whether it is worth the effort?

You can use the modal window style (without borders) to get a full screen effect and it 'seemed' to run faster but there isn't much there to justify the additional effort.

However the biggest change I noticed was that with DxWnd you can successfully span WITP-AE windows across multiple monitors which is a big change as full screen and graphics in standard game window will normally only update on the default screen (Main Display).

I suppose this can used as a poor man's 4k screen if you can span multiple monitors.

Has anyone out there got any opinions??

I had a bit more of a play around and DxWnd was measured as no quicker than running WITP-AE in a standard window but I didn't have to worry about which was my default screen (Main Display).

Probably worth it for that feature alone as my default display is a laptop screen and not as high a resolution as my external monitor.
