Okay, Im ready to throw in the towel. I just dont get this game. I admit it. Im a pacific war freak and long time wargamer, but the morale/supply/leadership/seach/fuel we wont launch because we are peacenik whatever rules have me at wit's end...again.

Once again, i bait my opponent, patiently setting up a battle. Once again, he gets a full launch against my carriers and I get...well...16 kates flew off of the five carriers i had assembled. Now this time the only sin I committed were my ships were lower on fuel then I like...but what the hell.

So the net result is I lose 3 or 4 carriers (and the war) and my opponent, my big trap hit one battleship...huh. It is clear to me that I do not understand the rules...since I continue to lose games within the first two months of the war.

I also dont get how the morale of my heavy bomber pilots hits the basement after one bombing mission. I dont get how I have all the advantages as the Japanese player yet I can't beg my planes off the flight deck when we spot the enemy. I knew he was coming. I positioned myself where I knew he couldnt launch his torpedo planes.

Needless to say I have had it. I don't get it and Im frustrated beyond measure.

I would like to get someone, anyone, to put together some sort of document that uses lots of small words to explain to me how to "game" with this game because to me it just doesnt play out like it should and if I am going to continue to enjoy my passion (I spend 3 or 4 hours a day playing) it needs to be fun again....other wise...I will go join the rest of the trolls playing half life or something at least the bullet flys when you press the trigger in that game.

I assume you were using basically the whole KB?

What was the date? If right after PH, did you remember to stand down all the a/c and then reset them to naval strike. (they will sometimes stay targeted on PH and not launch).

Do you have the previous save? As in before strike resolution?

I would be glad to take a look at it and see what is up with it.

Hi, Me too. Your orders phase before you end the turn that results in battle.

This is one more example of how frustrating it is to have mysterious rules and no feedback at all about the game's 500 checks.

That may work well in Diablo, where you can run a game in 30 minutes, but that is a continuous low-down frustration when you have to commit a couple of months for each game, and after a few hundred people have played UV and WiTP for 3 years or so, there are still answers like "only the developers know", or "that's part of the game mystery".

Someone once decided that we can never know which check is failing for, say, the escorts not flying, and now this is the 11th Commandment and that will never change. So one guesses until he gives up.

Hi, Why don't we wait till we see what happened before we decide why it happened.

Baldur's Gate (and several other CRPG), and even The Operational Art of War have an excellent learning tool: it's an option that when you check it, it shows the results of the checks.

I deeply miss something similar in WiTP, as you learn a lot from that. You see, when my fighters don't escort I never know if it is because of the weather, or morale, or fatigue, or experience, or the leader aggressives, or the leader inspiration, or the air HQ experience/fatigue/morale/leader, or because they were in extended range, or enemy CAP was too strong, or what else I can't imagine.

Then replace the word "fighters" by "bombers", "patrol aircraft", "subs" and "surface ships".

I understand what you mean, but i really think that this "holes" in the documentations of some game features are something that really makes the game even better. When my planes do not do what i expected them to do, i always pu myself in the shoes of the admirals in Tokyo or PH: they give general orders and crossed their fingers. When to reports came over their desks days later, it was not written: the XXX daitai did not escort because of low morale, but i guess something like: " communication problems" or "general coordination problem"...so i take this as part of FOW and i'm quite happy with this

okay I feel somewhat better. I have gone back and watched the turn, about 3 times....I think what happen is my Val spotted 3 ships south of me. But they were under clouds which were no doubt hiding the bulk of his fleet. My planes did not launch simply because the 3 ships that were spotted were not deemed esential to the war effort , thus no launch. It was only after he clobbered me that my remaining seaworthy carrier returned the blow...however wimpy it was. I guess I can chalk this game up to bad weather...damnit. Another day, another loss. Seems that I am racking them up. At least I feel like less of a moron this time. Though, plenty of moron in me I'm sure. One thing is for sure...when you play the great robby, you dont have to commit for more then a couple of months.

I still do not understand the reasons for a launch no launch in game. I would pay real money to have someone break this down for me...sans the formulas so I can feel like I am at least on par with my opponents in the understanding of all that goes into it.

nah no tossing the PC out the window. Now Im ready to jump myself. I am trying to find the previous turn in my email....I usually save the previous in game in a backup file, but I backed over it after the disaster...(my numb fingers and brain couldnt believe what I witnessed).

Hi, If he could launch on you. Then you could launch on him. I'll have to wait for the file before I can know anything about what happened.
But the order it happens is not important. One side has to be shown first but both sides launch strikes at the same time.

See that is what I believed too. Thus my frustration. I dont have the actual orders turn persay...already ran saved over it. What I did find was the previous turn. I checked it to just make sure I wasnt such a moron that I didnt have naval attack set. All my torpedo bombers (even the seriously beat up ones from a previous attack at Noumea) were set to naval attack. I had one squad of Vals set to search because I wanted to make sure I found him (I knew he was coming) I had 2 squads of zeros set to long range (covering a bombardment force ie the bait) everything else set to escort (60 percent). My planes found 3 of his ships which to means they all should of launched...based on my understanding of the rules. If I recall the combat correctly I put up over 20 zeros and 16 kates. Thus my..this can't be happening to me again....

I also did a morale check...just to be sure...everyone was between 60 and 99.....l dont get it.

I am going back to reading the rules...because this keeps happening to me, I believe I am simply not making the connection on the air rules...somehow.

Hi, In the turn you found how many sortiess did the TF have remaining? It would be the same unless you refueled and resupplied after that.

Ill have to rerun the turn again to get that information, but they should have plenty of sorties left. They went on 1 mission prior to this engagement...my less then satisfactory attack against Noumea. So they should be full of bombs and torpedos, hell I have Akagi raising hell south of Pearl and she has launched her planes at least 6 times in 4 days against merchant ships..

Whats your fuel state too? (all ships, not just the CV's).

One of those little things in life that can bite you is smaller ships like DD's refueling from the bigger ships (like CV!!!) and eating up ops points in the process. This results in less then idea flights due to ops point shortages.

My fuel state was poor...they were on the final leg of a long cruise (there last action of the Op was covering the battleships I was using to paste PM....I knew he was coming to battle with his carriers so I let my ships stay on station an extra day longer then I should have.)

Just in the interests of fun, split off all your low fuel ships into a separate TF so they don't suck the CV's fuel and rerun the turn. That will tell you if that was the cause of them sleeping in.

Email it to witp@sympatico.com , I'll send a copy to Mogami when it gets here.
