Well yes, it's a Nambu, because it was made by Nambu Ironworks, but what's it's designation?

Actually, I found the picture on an Italian website, after doing a Google picture search using the pistol's Japanese name.

I have to clarify that the NABU type 14 was the BAD weapon in question. Cant find the exact source. The Taisho 14 was an improved 1904 Nambu. That is, it was improved by simplifying the design to facilitate production, but did nothing to the striker spring which which was to weak and remained a potential source of misfires (the desing even had a SPARE spring installed in the but). It had double recoil springs, plus a magazine retaining spring on later models, which made removing the magazine difficult under combat conditions. Its safety catch needed both hands to operate. Many officers, Japanese and doubtless some Chinese, were killed in action as a result of this poor design. Also, later in the war production quality became so bad that the weapon could even be fired with the safety on, dropping it, or even sqeezing the grip to tight............

(correct me if I am wrong)

From what I've read, the problem with the Type 94, as Gregg correctly identified it, was that part of the mechanism protruded from the side of it, so that the weapon could fire if you just poked at it with a stick.

I get this image of a Japanese officer trying to draw his sidearm from his holster, and firing it through the tip of the holster into his own foot. I pity the poor bastards who had to make do with some of the weapons Japan produced near the end of the war.
