Don't know if this has been mention before, I couldn't find it.

Some of my initially selected recon units are now no longer recon units. E.g. I selected a Br Cav Recon Troop with all units classifed as recon. I lost one of my scout patrols, rebuilding it for the next battle but it no laonger has recon status. This has happened to other recon units.

The other thing that appears to happen is if you replace a recon capable unit for something that should be, they become recon capable. After using the editor I come to the conclusion that it the formation that is recon capable not the unit. Is this correct?

Is there anyway to make my recon units recon again?

I can't anser all your questions - but I did find out that if you upgrade a recon unit, the unit retains recon status ... ie ... PzII to PzIII, the PzIII now has recon ability. In the case of AFVs, I suspect that it is the crew themselves (if they survived their tanks destruction) that carries the recon ability.

To be clear, are you saying that after repairing a destroyed scout team - that they lost the recon ability

Correct. It only happens if the entire unit is lost.

Ok - next question ...
is the unit in question one that would normally have recon ability?

If I'm reading your post correctly, then what you're saying is, that if a unit has recon due soley to being purchased as part of a (recon) company ... repairing it (if it was totally destroyed) won't make it recon again.

I wonder if this also applies to company captains which are destroyed.
They have recon ability, even though that unit type may not inherintely be a recon unit.

There is a flag which can be set for a unit to give it recon, but I'm not familiar enough with the editor to instruct you as to how to set that flag. Someone with more knowledge on the subject will have to assist you further on this issue.

Yes the unit in question was a recon patrol. Note that I now have an Daimler AC and a Stuart V that have lost their recon ability, both after being rebuilt completely. They do not lose the ability if it only a partilal fix.

There is a flag but that is the Formation area of teh OOB Editor. It applies to the formation.

A Pl within a formation needs to have this aspect set at that formation level. So a Pl which is not Recon and in a Recon set Formation will not have Recon ability. It will have its own associated ability what ever that happens to be.

An individual unit though will pick up that ability from the formation.
this though appears to be at purchase time.

Yes I know how to use the editor to give a unit recon ability but thats not the problem. The problem is units that have recon ability lose it when they are completely destroyed and rebuilt.

I simply dont buy recon units in my core force. They tend to die doing their job, Much better to make them support purchases for each battle.

What i was pointing out is that a unit will get that ability froma formation on initial purchase.

Also distinguish between a unit in a formation vs a pl etc.

But when you rebuild from scratch these units as individual items eg a AC will not pick up that formation ability as they were not a component of the original purchase structure. When you build from a dammaged structure then the original status still exists so it is applied to the new vehicles etc added.

Outcome, keep rotating formations so they do not get destroyed. Not always easy as it does not take much to blow up a recon team of 3 guys.

Which is why its a bug.

I would disagree that it is a bug. It wasnt programmed that way to begin wiht. A design failure maybe, but not a bug.

Agreed, considering all the OOB changes over the years.

The Editor is your friend in rectifying that programming shortcoming.
Be glad that tool is available.
