I should very much like to point out in the strongest possible terms that I do not, in any way, shape or form, speak English with an American accent!

So are you saying you speak American with an English accent then?

Well.... he is up to something, but at present I have no idea what or where..... the map is completely devoid of any enemy forces at all. I will pprint the combat report in full this time so you don't miss any of the riveting action.......

Sorry. What I was getting at is perhaps there is a large difference between British and Japanese ship experience levels. That might explain your bad combat results. Or at least the lesser number of hits you seem to get.

In generic WitP the Brit/Jap numbers are about the same. I wondered if they were different in WPO.

Ok, looks like this is the pattern, a day or two of nothing, then frantic action, then a day or two of nothing.... maybe he keeps popping home for his tea and biscuits?

So, what next? Well I predict the Pescadores will be next... and I wonder where his CV is... no sign of anything on the map at all. My southern Tfs at Taytay remain, one BB Tf holds at Manila. The Lingayen BB Tf moves north to try and catch him, and my CV loops round to see whats to the West of Formosa.

Lets see what tomorrow brings?

Cheers

Roger

I suspect not, but will need to look when I get a break formt he action. Judging from the hit ratios there may be something in that.

Well, guess what, nothing happens again... Apart that is from me getting a CL in my sights near Hong Kong only to miss with both torpedoes and be attacked by its escorts. Interestingly the report said 2 hits and badly damaged.... when i looked on the screen its got 7 sys damage....

So, is he back in port to relaod then back out again... if so the next battle will be the night of the 17th i reckon and we have a pattern emerging.

Cheers

In my experience, Scandinavians get nearer to a perfect English accent than anyone apart from the Germans.

Difficult to tell on a message board though ... lol.

I didn't want to, I didn't want to tell myself what I was up against! Morale is currently being bolstered by lots of alcohol, don't want to depress myeself further.

Ok, next day brings what I predicted, nothing really. Well three of my subs who are way out near Singapore and Camranh Bay were detected and forced to dive deep to avoid attack, but no damage. And one of them got another CA in their sights and missed with torps.

If String is running to timetable next move will see a major naval action at one of my ports... all three of my main ones have TFs in them, but none are strong enough to withstand a large force of his. To date he's tended to arrive with about 4/6 BBs with a few escorts.

We shall see.

Well either I am a day out on estimations or Sting has changed his behaviour. No attacks anywhere and again no sightings of anything. My main activity is to move subs back out of Lingayen, some subs have dreadful ranges and have to pop into port every few days.

I do think he is moving stuff forward from Camranh Bay to Hong Kong as that's been the only real sightings in the last few days. I've ordered my CV TF to investigate... they'll probably say its too windy to fly or something!

I need to take stock of the situation, at present I'm weak and having to defend 3 places at once, but I may settle for assembling most stuff together and striking a killing blow - I suspect he also is spread out.

Certainly things cannot stay as they are, he is well ahead on points so I will have to take a risk at some stage.

Okay still relatively quiet, but String has sneaked his CV up close to pescadores to scout and my CV force is now between him and his base. I fancy a CV battle so I have ordered what I hope is an intercept... I need a result here.

During the night I manage to locate and finally strike with a torpedo.

Sub attack at 42,42

Japanese Ships
SS No. 46

Allied Ships
BC New Zealand, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD Wolverine
DD Wessex

I also am moving some of my subs back tp pescadores for refuelling, they may also come across the enemy CV TF..

Can I point out that was the remaining ship from the previous round of combat. Again notice I actually scored more hits on the BBs and BCs than he did on mine, but again penetration counts... I seem to have trained my crews to deliberately aim at belt armour always.

BB Ramilles, on fire, heavy damage
BC Australia, Shell hits 2

Quite a tame final round!

Soooo, some reactions.

1. I have never ever wtahced a turn as bloody as this in my life. Its a wonder I am still sane!
2. Anyone come up with a rational explanation for the differences in gunnery?
3. This is the way to kill things, send in multiple Tfs.

I have emailed String the replay so he can enjoy it. I now have to consider what to do. The following reports will illustrate my situation.

Roger

apologies, somewhere i there a stray 'don't turn off colour html was missed out, frankly I cannot be bothered to go look for it. Okay I went back in and found it. I wish there was a better way of editing this then dropping it into here, its a pain this system of html as its so primitve... maybe there is, if so can someone enlighten me?

The ghost attack....

Ok, it was a first game, and I frankly have been treating it a s a learnign experience. My feelings at the moment are that the experience has come to an end, or will soon do so.

I'd be interested in others opinions of the worth of struggling on.

I'd be even more interested in their opinions of either where I went wrong - so I can do better in future, and perhaps if they think there are issues with balance here.

What strikes me throughout is the difference in hit power of the ships. String has siad elsewhere on this forum that he feels the scenario is somewhat unbalanced....

Ok, I look forward to your comments, feel free, the more the merrier.

I will sleep on this and decide tomorrow what to do.

Please do contribute.

Roger

Roger,

My suggestion is to give it a few days to see if you can figure out how badly String was hurt. If it's clear that he won decisively, offer him terms. Then, play the scenario again with sides switched.

Regards,

- Erik

1. is good, I was hoping the fights would be bloody. Admirals make a difference.
2. I I'll bet that while in tests giving the Brits a *slightly* higher ROF reduced accuracy, here it seems to have backfired. Have tweaked for first patch.
3. Yes sir. 4 TFs of 2 BBs will do more than 1 TF of 8.

As to the ghost attack, that seems to happen when a TF has over 26 ships.

Also, 250 hits from KGV.... totalling her starting Ammo, she has 3 sets of Main Turrets each with 9 ammo, 2 sets of 4 inchers with 30 ammo, 1 set of 13pdrs and 1 of 3pdrs, each with 36 ammo, and a set of AA MGs with 36 Ammo. 36+36+36+30+30+9+9+9 = 195 hits, so some of that had to be FOW... unless it is rounds per gun, then it is over the 250.

Ok, a night's sleep and some thinking and here we go again.

For those who would like the full thrill of the replay String has posted a url for it in the main WPO forum. Its worth the viewing, honestly.

Right, what to do. First of all the points.. I was 1000 behind before that move, I am now almost 1500 behind, not such a huge jump considering. The way points accrue for damage makes a difference. I suspect quite a lot of my ships had already gained a lot of damage for him in previous days whereas I hit a lot of undamaged ships - albeit not very hard.I do like the points for damage idea... I wonder if WITP would ever use that?

Ok, whilst I am now convinced that you must operate in optimum Tf sizes I am also convinced that you need to bring a lot of TFs together.... and keep hitting the enemy. So we must concentrate. pescadores is out, and he's welcome to try and invade Formosa.... if he dares. So its all ships to Lingayen.... a central point form which to reorganise and then develop my amazing counterthrust that will wipe him off the seas (well you have to be an optimist don't you?)

Some ships will maybe not make it, but we shall see. I reckong that his ships are all low on ammo now so its a case of get some sea between us first.

He did have you outnumbered nearly 2 to 1 8 BB and 2 BC versus 10 BB and 9 BC from the RN and he had along his newest most powerfull BB;s and BC's (Weird calling the R class most modern and powerfull !!!At lease 7 of his ships were pure 15" ships) and his DD's managed to light up your fleet before the main action.

Result doesnt seem out of kilter to me !!!!

Each of his TF's had ships that outranged most of your fleet only Mutsu's 16" guns were able to fight against the 4 R class BB's 15" guns and the 3 big 15" BC'ers.

at 13.5"/14" you had 2 BB's and 2 BC's that join the fight he had 6 more BB's and 2 BC's with 13.5" guns.

So at range 1 v 7
then 5 v 15

the big problem in that fight was that you were outnumbered and slowed down by the DD hits and then your main gun ammo must be running low in your non 12" ships after that many fights especially Mutsu's big 16" ers fighting from range alone in a lot of the fights even when the 12" get into the fight they struggle to penetrate whereas his 13.5" and 15" guns have more stopping power. (Resolutions 15" sunk Musashi in my last WITP PBEM so I KNOW they have a lot of hitting power !!!!!)

Basically range, magazine space, stopping power and numbers were all on his side and he preceeded it with a succsessfull DD attack that made you burn yet more ammo.

For all that you hit several of his ships quite hard I would be happyyou got off so lightly

I really dont think that was an anomolous result.

Seperate question is the scenario balanced with that many modern big gun RN Ships
