I wanted to see if setting patrol planes to naval attack at night was worthwhile, so I set up a head-to-head test. None of them would fly, even if they were in an airbase that had enemy ships in the same hex. Do you need experience of 80+ or something like that for naval attack missions to work at night, or are night naval attacks a complete sham?

You have to actually spot the TF at night. Same hex helps (but is usually a bad sign). Usually it means having a sub in the hex with the target (which usually means a coastal base, which is usually not very healthy for the sub).

Not to say they won't attack otherwise. But the "gotta spot the TF during the night impulse" is importnat. And yes, you usually need about 70 exp.

I don't know about the exp levels but one of my favorite tactics early on is to set a pby unit in the PI to night naval. I have had some real good luck with this unit.

I hope this means that if the map shows my sub(s) in the same hex as an enemy TF while I'm entering orders that the TF is considered spotted. Or is there a naval night movement phase prior to the spotting phase in which case the enemy TF can get away? Recently I had KB in the same hex as my sub while I was entering orders but did not think about using patrol AC at night to attack it. It probably wouldn't have mattered because all my patrol squadrons are under 70 experience.

EDIT: Did a quick test just now and yes, naval movement comes before night air attacks so it looks like your sub has to be in the same hex as the enemy TF after night naval movement.

What altitude do you use for that PBY unit?

You need the sub to be in the same hex with the target during the night phase. Also don't worry about exp. If you see a juicy target, or just feel plain lucky, put yor 30exp sqadrons on night naval. You will NEVER hit anything, but if they fly (and the will quite often) you'll give you're opponent a heart attack. And that's what this game is all about
The 5 seconds of horror when he realizes his most precious assets are under attack by torpedos... he'll think you're sending some crack piolets (thanks Brady) and pi$$ his pants
I know it's just 5 secs, but plenty of urine can be extracted from opponents in such little time.
Good hunting

Have had night naval attacks, but it seems to need sub for spotting. I don't know if Coastwatchers work for that.

Yes. The key components are that the enemy TF needs to have been spotted in the night phase - subs, coastwatchers etc and the Naval Attack group ideally needs 80+ exp. I have a group in the Aleutians in my game against Fabertong which has an average exp of 76 which has attacked Mutsu & Co twice now I believe at night.

Regards,

Steven

Now I just wish that they'd hit something.... Not much else to do with night fighters against AI...

Not sure about having night fighters intercept. In previous versions, this caused an automatic CTD. Haven't heard anything about it lately.
