Just how do you move airgroups that have pilots but no aircraft?
In a PBEM game I'm now playing, I have a couple airgroups stuck at a base that is more or less cut off.
I can not get enough supply in to said base to allow the game engine to send in replacement aircraft.
I have run AK's into the base and attempted to load the air units onto the AK's, but they will not load unless the airgroup has at least one aircraft.
I have also tried airlifting them out, but thet will not air transport out on transport aircraft.
I have even tried moving them out with subs set to transport.
So, is there a way to more or less save the pilots?
Or are they just stuck there, with no way of moving them off the base?

I'm not 100% sure, but you would probably be advised to leave the airgroup in place and try to get at least a few replacements to it. I just recently moved a P40 group from Java to Oz that had no planes but pilots, the idea was the rebuild them. Granted it was a bit "gamey" as how did these pilots magically transfer?

Long story short...next turn, the airgroup disapeared. Whether this was due to recent fix attempts to clean up fragments or not i'm unsure....but be advised it could happen to you.

I had the same problem, but it was on a sinking CV. The only thing I can think of in your case is to withdraw the unit into another like type to save the pilots.

I guess I have 2 possibilities. Turn replacements on and hope you have enough supply to put planes into it. The problem with this course of action is that you'll then have excess planes (assuming you don't have a full load of pilots). By the way, this won't work if it's a fragment.

I flew in planes of the same type and disbanded the air unit. The pilots transferred to the new group. You save the pilots, but loose the unit. I suppose you could also withdraw them.

If you disband, the pilots and planes go to the other unit and the originating unit have no planes or pilots in the production cue. If you withdraw, the planes go to the other unit, but the pilots will remain with the original unit in the production cue.

This is the situation that the withdraw button is for .... the unit plus the pilots are supposed to come back as a reinforcment in a couple of months. Or you could risk an AK to pick them up if they are at a base with a port.

But, if they are on a carrier, they're screwed.

Check San Francisco!!!!
I had one broken plane and 30 pilots of the AVG located in Rangoon. Heavy bombing of the airfield but no attacks on shipping (think my opp wanted me to evac). So I took a chance and loaded remnant on AK. Next turn there's the AK part way to Chandpur: M/T. Quite by accident as I clicked on San Francisco for some other reason I noticed another fighter unit there: 1 broken plane and 30 pilots of the AVG.

Since I considered the teleportation of the AVG fragment to be a bit "gamey" I decided there was nothing wrong with having them join up with the rest of the AVG in China by staging through the USSR. (That works BTW)

You cannot disband or withdraw an air unit unless another unit of the same nationality using the same aircraft type is in the hex.

Your best bet is to fly a fragment with a single aircraft to the base and disband it into the plane-less group, then fly the group out. Using an example of an A6M2 group at Wotje:

I have an A6M2 group at Kwalajein with 26 ready aircraft and 1 damaged aircraft. I transfer the group somewhere else and run the turn. The next turn, my fragment of 1 is repaired, so I transfer it to Wotje and disband it into the group at Wotje. With an aircraft in the group, the entire group can now transfer out to wherever I can reach.

Damn, I could have saved those 7 pilots on the Kaga. They had experience between 85 and 95.

You also cant move an airgroup to or from an AK unless it has planes. I once had an airgroup on an AK that got hit, and the fire burned up its airplanes. But not the pilots. All I could do at that point was scuttle the AK and wait until the airgroup comes back.

Did you get the pilots back with the unit when it came back?

Gregg: Also keep in mind that as the allies you will not suffer from a shortage of airgroups in either the short or long run. You have plenty. Pilots are not generally much of a problem either.

So despite being a miserly micromanager myself, I would advise not to worry about those few pilots. They don't matter.

7 or 8 pilots stranded behind enemy lines in not a matter for the Commander in Chief.

if the unit is a fragment, it can't be withdrawn and if it is disbanded, it won't return.

I sure hope Gregg is playing Japan. I would hate to be court-martialed for giving aid and comfort to the enemy.
