Moses,
You most definately ARE my China advisor since you have crushed my soul in China within our Campaign! Am waiting another day and then shall launch another attack at Changsha and THIS TIME will get those force ratios!

My plan is to take Palymra and Johnson Island so I have a pair of forward bases and then land on the largest, southern Island. Pending how that goes, then I move to the northernmost to isolate PH. This plan will be carried out in three phases:

Phase 1: Capture outlying Islands as already described.
Phase 2: Take two of the Hawaiian Islands directly.
Phase 3: Land at PH after a LONG seige!

If any phase badly miscarries, then I have to ability to withdraw. I will not gut my forces here if I cannot do it!

Have ordered 3 Inf Div with support units towards Tarawa and Kwajelein in preparation for the operation.

Had to hop off for class.

March 4, 1942

No significant SS activity

Air
China
Yenen is hit by 29Z and 65B, lose 1 plane, and damage 10 Resources
Kunming gets 22F and 8B for 2 Resources damage

Noticed planes moved into Changsha. Set two Daitai of Zeros and two Daitai of Oscars to support next attack there. Bet he is getting desperate there...

Batavia 41B AF and 6 Cas

Manila 15F and 7B AF and 55 Cas

PM Ref 33B for 75 cas

Dar Ref 27B for 54 Cas

Ground
Landing at Tjilitjap, Java

New Britain (60,89) 34-1 51J for 21Aussies

Capture Derby, Aust for 40 Cas ALL NW Australia is in my hands.

Kendari, Sula Captured 6-1 33J for 1716 POW

Navy
Have had considerable supply and TK groups forming and heading for Kwajalein and Tarawa to begin stockpiling for Hawaii Operation.

Moving Naval Units to Japan for light maintenance and/or Kwajalein for same reasons.

KB2 has reached the western edge of the board and is now moving northwards towards India looking for targets...once done, it will head for Japan.

Hawaiian Operation

Reconn Palymra and Christmas Island and spot little-to-no troops there. Decide to improvise taking Palymra with two SNLF and a BF from Pago-Pago. If I can get it east then GREAT! With small forces, it might not alert Wolfpack to the GRAND PLAN...

Load Imperial Guards Div, 1st Hv Artillery, and 15th Eng Regiment for Johnson Island. They are prepping as they go with a stop at Kwajalein.

AUTO-VICTORY: For the first time, I have reached the magical 4-1 spread! I haven't taken Philippines or Java YET! How about that??!!

Good Sir! I figure that I can stop at ANY point if things look insane. Shoudl get a feel for things based on his reaction to my taking of Palymra and Johnson Islands. If there isn't much, then I will take one of the Hawaiian Islands and see. If that goes well...

One step at a time for Eastern Wind. We'll see...

How are things going in your campaign?

How I know Wolfpack he won´t care much about Palmyra and Johnson! He will just think: "Hey I can bomb this place with my 4E bombers and if there aren´t too many fighters and I can avoid losses I´ll do it!" But I think he has to defend Hawai for sure! He won´t come with his Navy, perhaps with limited efforts, as he knows he would lose probably much more than you but I think he will bring in every plane he can get. And there will be ground troops in place. With guns of all calibres. I think you would have to bomb for a looong time to take those heavy guns out that will beat up your APs. That´s what I would think about how Wolfpack will react, but I could be wrong as I learned in 230 turns against him that he´s still up for a surprise!

Our game went just back for 8 turns as we have this "no bombardment result - bug" or however I should call that. But I´ve taken Diamond Harbour with paras and can bring in troops now without taking losses, so that was quite a good move! If my bombardments aren´t working in general in the future we´ll have to quit our game I fear. If it´s just related to Baker Island then Wolfpack has agreed not to station 4E bombers there as I can´t do something against them. But we´re not happy with the overall situation. Perhaps it helps to redo all those last turns and it works again. If not,...

But good luck for your operation, looking forward to reading your AAR!

Combat Report for March 6, 1942

SS
He has a couple of SS at Batavia, Java and I am going to send an ASW Group to cause some trouble.

Additionally, he has a sub NW of Kwajelein that I have spotted several times. Another ASW Group will go there.

I have recalled all my eastern Pacific SS to Kwajelein to prep for Operation Eastern Wind. My intention is to let them rest a week or two and then send them in a wind circle to the north and south of Hawaii to take up blocking positions for any ships going back and forth. This group of SS are nearly 30 in total.

Send one SS to Recon Johnson Island with its' Glen.

Air
China:
Yenen 29Z and 74B damage 18 Res
Changsha A total of three raids hit the area. 54Z and 138B hit the AF, shoot down 4 Hurricanes, and cause 247 Cas

Raid Dacca, Ind with 103 Betty's for a disappointing 7 Resources damaged

Manila gets a small raid of 9F and 7B doing 27 Cas

Ground
Attack at Tjilitjap, Java, get 0-1, Fort 3--226 Jap for 156 Dutch

Shock Attack at New Britain, get 24-1--35 Jap for 68 Aussies (Lark and NGVR Battalions)

Bombard Batavia for 22 Cas

32, 78 Timor gets 10-1 for 7 Jap and 12 Dutch

CHANGSHA Deliberate Attack 0-1 Fort 9
Japan 234,955 1889 Guns 297 Vehicles Attack Value ONLY 1,374
China 170,164 630 Guns 0 Vehicles Defense Value 10,476

Casualties
Japan 6,985 160 Guns 28 Vehicles
China 4,435 86 Guns 0 Vehicles

MOSES!!?? Thoughts...it looks like a LONG way to go. I checked my supply and some units are OK and others are short. Is there a reason for that?

Navy
Lose an AP at Wyndham from earlier damage by ABDA planes.

Somethings wrong??!! A few checks.

1.) Supply--You need a nearby base with a big load of supply. (30,000 plus). Otherwize units will draw on an intermittant basis.

2.) You do have HQ in hex???

3.) Look at leader of the HQ. Is he a dud.

4.) Withdraw any unit with less then half of artillery ready. Bring them back when they have 100% of arty.

5.) Do you have all four ENG units in the hex.

Looks like you have a ways to go. But your crushing his industry. He has to be getting near the end of his rope. I'd keep at it but I don't understand why his forts aren't going down.

I'll go through all those notes and see. Wuhan is where I am drawing my supplies from. I have an army HQ at both Wuhan and Changsha. Should I have them both at Changsha? I only have three Eng Reg at Changsha. I'll look aournd the map for the 4th and MOVE it! Got a feeling it is NW of Hong Kong...

You need a corps HQ at Changsa. One with command range of zero. The army HQ only needs to be within twice its command range which usually is not a problem.

Having a corp HQ (in command range) gives you a 90%!!!!!!! bonus in combat. If your missing out on that it would explain my success against you in China in our game.

March 7, 1942

SS I-159 tries to attack a group of 6DD between Bombay and Karachi. Luckily, it does not get hit and/or sunk.

Air
China
Yenen 29Z and 67B do 27 Resources
Chang 53Z and 88B destroy 3 Hurricanes, hit the AF, and do 6 Cas
Kunming 22F and 21B do 9 Resources

Sweep Dacca, Ind with 70+ Zero--no opposition

Ground
In New Britain I get a 30-1 against the remaining fragments there 30J for 20 Aussies Cas

Bombard Batavia, Java for 31 Cas

Bombard Chang for 180 Cas

Nandi, Fiji--I launch an attack without knowing what is there. Expecting an Artillery Regiment and BF, I run into an entire New Zealand Brigade! Ooooppps... 748 Jap for 6 NZ/Amer. Will bombard here for a few days and then try again.

(32,78) Timor 9-1 9J for 13 Dutch

Navy
Send in KB2 towards the coast between Bombay and Karachi to see if I can hit those DDs my SS dealt with. Would be nice to get a few combatant ships...

Spot a couple of small convoys between Kodiak and Prince Rupert. Vector a couple of Cl-DD TF to try to catch something...

Lihu, Hawaii goes to a Lvl-2 AF. Am reporting any changes to Hawaii...

In response to Moses questions, here is what I gleaned from last turn:

HQ 5th Army, Corps HQ in Changsha Command Radius 1 Gen Inoguchi in Command Stats: Air Skill 44, Land Skill 54, Administration 58, and Aggression is 75. All my units a have EXACTLY the amount they need in supply.

My supply center is in Wuhan---it has 34,786 in Supply. It is marked in yellow for supply status. I have my recovering divisions there and a TON of aircraft present (300).

Should I move those recovering units to another town?

March 8, 1942

Have recalled all my SS from PH area and they are converging on Kwajelein.

Air
China
Yenen 11Z and 21B do 3 Resources
Kunming 20F and 12B get 2 Resources
Changsha 52Z and 89B destroy 1 Hurricane-the AF-10 Cas, three other, smaller raids (total 34B--lose 1P) do 100 Cas

Dacca, Ind is hit by 91B and sees 20 Resources damaged.

ALEUTIANS ACTION: 7 B-25 attack a DD and put 1 Bomb into it...

Am moving Zero and Betty Daitais slowly eastward to prep for Operation Eastern Wind. Will also move 2-3 Daitai of Sally. Have loaded some Kates and Vals on a convoy for Kwajelein. Plan is for about 350 (125F, 150B, and 75 Carrier Capable) planes to make the move in total.

Ground
New Britain clean-up gets 15-1 39 Jap for 19 Aussie

Batavia, Java Bombard does 10 Cas

Changsha Bombard does 76 Cas

Nandi, Suva bombard does 25 Cas

Tjilitjap, Java bombard does 6 Cas

32,78 Timor Clean-Up does 391 Cas

American Counterattack! Remnant US Forces on Mindanao recapture Cotabato! Thought I had killed them all. Will send a 'clean-up' unit there and deal with them.

Recon spots 4 Units moving up towards Darwin, Aust on the road to the SE. Will move and ID in that direction to investigate. If Wolfpack wants to attack here, he is welcome. I still have enough forces in NW Australia to give him a REAL bloody nose! Set my 3 Daitai's of Bombers in Darwin on Ground Attack.

Naval
KB2 is closing on the SW coast of India. Will hope to get some ships that are wandering back-and-forth there...

Hiryu and Soryu have completely repaired their minor damage while at Tokyo. With Junyo there, I think I will send them raiding near Anchorage and then back to Kwajalein for Operation Eastern Wind.

ACTION IN THE ALEUTIANS! 4 PT Boats attack a raiding group of mine near Kodiak, Ala. In a crazy brawl that follows, 2 PTs are sunk and I have 1DD hit with a TT. Not exactly a good exchange...

Wolfpack and I got some turns in over the last day so here are three:

March 9, 1942

No SS activity

Air
China
Changsha 54Z and 87B hit AF. Later raids inflict 154 Cas with 40B doing the damage.
Kunming 21F and 14B do 4 Resource damage

Dacca, India get 97B who do 24 Resources damage.

Manila 16F and 7B hit AF

Ground
Bombard at Naga, Phil and do 14 Cas

New Britain (60,89) 52-1 lose 12 Jap for 1468 POW. That remnant of troops is gone.

Bombard Changsha for 143 Cas

Australia (24,86) Shock Attack on BF remnant there 45-1 and inflict 14 Cas

Nandi, Fiji bombard for 14 Cas

Bombard at Tjilitjap for 31 Cas

Timor (32,78) 25-1 10 Jap for 51 Dutch

Navy
Invasion TF leaves Pago-Pago with 2 SNLF and 6th BF for Palymra.

KB2 is at the SW edge of map and moving northwards towards SW India. We'll see...

Base Improvements: Wuhan goes to Size 7 AF--shut off improvements so supply isn't used there.

March 10, 1942

SS
Recall over 20 SS from S and SW of Hawaiian. Want to rest them at Kwajalein for a bit and then send them out to raise havoc.
Recall over 10 SS around Indian Ocean to Rangoon for same purpose.
ASW Group attacks SS Triton with no success.

Air
China
Yenen 21Z and 60B inflict 5 Resource damage--have nearly WIPED Yenen's supply out. Will shift to Sian soon...
Kunming 21F and 11B for 1 Resource--Have another BF coming so I can fully serve the 2 Daitai of Bombers there.
Changsha 85B hit AF and 51B do 107 Cas
Chungking Zero Sweep puts 53Z vs. 9 Hurricanes Disappointing Results--lose 4Z for 5 Hur.
Chinese Counterattack at Changsha with 12 SB-2c for 38 Jap Cas

Khota Bharu has 73B hit the AF and 11B cause 31 Cas for the loss of 2 planes

Batavia, Java gets 3Z and 72B hitting AF and doing 10 Cas for 1 plane

Ground
Naga Bombardment goes badly and lose 17 Jap Cas

Batavia Bombard gets 97 Cas

CHANGSHA ATTACK I do slightly better by the final score Japan up slightly to 1525 vs Chinese 8568 (down over 1000 points). Casualties--Japan 6,750 Cas, 132 Guns, and 15 Vehicles China 3,435 and 152 Guns The Artillery is the key! He is down to 350 pieces and I have nearly 2,000. We will wait for 5-7 days and strike again.

Bombard Nadi, Fiji lose 7 Jap for 29 American/NZ

Bombard Tjilitjap for 10 Cas

Timor (32-78) 50-1 and destroy remnant there 637 POW

Navy
KB2 arrives at the coast of India, spots several ship group at Bombay and Karachi and DON'T fly a strike! Move the KB2 towards the east along the coast. This is a risk because he will move planes to those bases.

Base Improvements: Chengting goes to Lvl 4 AB

Will add next turn in another entry later today.

March 13, 1942

SS Send 5 SS (4 Ro/1 I-Boat) to patrol west of Sydney to try to catch some of his traffic.

Air
China
Yenen 29Z and 69B do 13 Resources damage. SHIFT THIS GROUP TO SIAN!
Kunming 21F and 14B get 4 Resources
Changsha 37F and 92B hit AF and 42B cause 76 Cas
Chinese Counterattack at Chang 7 SB2c fight 25 Oscars and 3 get shot down. No damage.

Khota Bharu sees 82B hit the AF and 19B inflict 36 Cas

Batavia, Java 66B hit the AF and do 47 Cas

Dacca, Ind THE AVG RETURNS! As I feared, the AVG does return over Dacca. My Fighter Sweep of 48Z encounter 24 P-40 and 19 Hurricanes: lose 16Z and shot down 4 of each opponent planes. Disappointing but my Zero pilots are flying at long range.

The Bomber Strike follows with 9Z escorting 92B: Lose 1Z and 11B but shot down 1 Hur and 3-40. Do only 3 Resources damage. The loss of 11 Bettys is bad but it could have been FAR worse...

Set all planes to rest...

Ground
Deliberate Attack at Tjilitjap, Java Reduce Forts from 3 to 2--317 Jap for 268 Dutch.

Deliberate Attack at Naga, Phil and get spanked! 256 Jap for 58 Phil...

Bombard Batavia for 58 Cas

Bombard Changsha for 11 Cas

Bombard Nandi for 68 Cas

CAPTURE Madioen, Java! Once the retreat begins from Batavia, all Dutch are now cut off...

Naval Action!

KB2 (Akagi, Kaga, Hosho, and Ryuho) are the target and attack targets along SW India!
I had a heart-attack with the first incoming attack: 36F and 21B vs 46Z! My Sea Eagles kick BUTT! They shot down 28F and 6B! I do lose 5Z. A total of 8 Blenheims and 7 Swordfish get through and score NO HITS!

Second strike in the afternoon brings 12F and 5B--CAP shots down 9F and all B!!!

I get one strike at a DD Group: 29Z, 18V, and 24K vs. 14F. I lose only 1V and shoot down another 7 Fighters! Hit 3 DD with TT and Bombs.

Though a risk, I order the KB2 to sail along the India coast towards Ceylon for another day. Perhaps I can bag more planes and/or ships before heading for Rangoon.

SUMMATION: The Dacca results depressed me until I watched the slaughter in the west of India. I totaled the results and was cheered: the Japanese lost (for the day) 22Z, 11 Betty, and 1 Val for a total of 34 planes and the Allies lost 56 Fighters () and 11 Bombers for a total of 67. I'll take that!

Moses states that shooting down fighters are the key in 1942. If so, then THIS is a VERY good day!

Noting all the shipping activity there, I decide to send KB3 up to Dutch Harbor. CVs Junyo, Hiryu, and Soryu are toally repaired. With 12 escorts, they depart under Nagumo's command. They will be a northern prong for the upcoming Eastern Wind. I will have Hiyo in about 10 days. She will move up and join those three then.

KB2 is halfway back to Rangoon.

KB1 is awaiting Zuiho's arrival tomorrow at Noumea.

A large convoy departs Toyko carrying a Daitai of Kates, Vals, and Helen's for Kwajalein.

Engineering US--Hilo goes to AF4. I want this AF so I can carry TTs on my Betty's!

March 14, 1942

SS Nothing

Air
China
Changsha 49B hit AF
Sian 24Z and 74B get 11 Resources
Kunming get 21F and 12B No damage--I have another BF about to arrive in Hanoi and then a second Daitai of Bombers can join the attack.

Khota Bharu gets 70B for AF and 1 Cas 12B do another 9 Cas
Shift these to ground assault to support my attack here.

DELIBERATE ATTACK AT BATAVIA, JAVA! Reduce Forts to 4, gain a 6-1 on first assault and CAPTURE port! 208 Jap for 2515 POWs! Survivors retreating to Badoeng. Port, AF, and resources are in good shape. They need some repairs but nothing terrible. Set out after survivors!

Capture Djokjakarta, Jv! This portion of Java will collapse at Badeong. No place to retreat too...

Capture Cold Bay, Alaska.

Operation Eastern Wind is shaping up nicely.

Operational Concept (by Phases):
1. Will capture Palmrya Island by March 25th. This will become the advance base for operation. Am still debating Johnson Island as well...

2. 24 SS at Kwajalein will deploy in two groups and advance North and South of Hawaii. They will travel in packs far away from the Islands. Once directly NE and SE of Hawaii, they will spread out into scouting lines between Hawaii and USA.

3. KB1 and KB3 (TOTAL 4CV, 2 Medium CV, and 2 CVL) will do the same thing and swing north and south of Hawaii to cutoff the Islands and (hopefully) catch a convoy or two... Once surprise is lost, they will sweep some of the AF in Hawaii to knock down fighters.

4. Convoys load and depart for the Southern Island. Landing will take place on Kona and then capture of Hilo to follow.

5. Massive airlift of planes to occur. Currently have en route or present in Kwajalein: 1 Daitai of Vals, 1 Daitai of Kates, 3 Daitai of Betty, 3 Daitai of Zero, 1 Daitai of Oscars, and 3 Daitai of Helen. The total will be around 360 planes.

Current Troops enroute and/or present:
Infantry Divisions: 2nd ID, 16th ID, Imperial Guards ID
Infantry Units: 4 SNLF and 5 Naval Guards
Engineers: 3 Eng Regiments
Artillery: 2 Artillery Regiments
BF: 2 Large BF and 4 Special BF

These are the troops scheduled to land around April 15th on Hawaii.

Thoughts??? Comments??? Ideas???

I take it that these are the troops that are going to land on the outling islands, You will need twice that to take Pearl Itself

have a look at Admiral Laurents AAR

By the way you can get round the no bombardments bug by creating Bombardment TFs in Port.

Its changing a TF's designation at sea that does not seem to stick, Try it on a few dot bases till you get confident with speeds etc also try changing a TF's role to Bombardment and then go back to it you will find that Bombardment has not stuck

Good luck with East wind

Wolfpack and I have not been able to get too many turns done over the last week due to holidays and both of us being sick. This combat report shall cover from March 15-17, 1942

March 15, 1942

SS KVII hit by LBA near Rangoon.

Air
China
Changsha 37F 87B hit AF and inflict 22 Cas 39B 26Cas
Sian 32Z 77B do 8 Resources Damage

Manila 26F and 14B hit AF

Khota Bharu 76B cause 44 Cas

35, 85 South of Darwin 13B get 2 Cas

Ground
Bombardments:
Tjilitjap, Jv 2 Jap--6 Dutch
Changsha 52 cas

Deliberate Attack at Khota Bharu 5-1 Reduce Forts to 3 147 Jap for 226 Brit

Deliberate Attack at Nandi, Fiji 1-1 Forts to 0 61 Jap for 123 US/NZ

Navy
I divert two convoys.

The first conovy near Davao, PH is carrying 50,000 Troops for Operation Eastern Wind. I had assigned them to prep for Johnson Island and want to change that to Kona. By doing this, they will build Prep Points during the 2 week trip to Kwajelein.

The second convoy I have headed for Palmyra Island and want it to have some more punch. 3 SNLF and a BF might not be enough. Have it move to Canton Island to pick-up two Naval Guard units. Should be enough.

KB Status:
KB1 Hiryu, Soryu, and Junyo have left Tokyo and are headed for Dutch Harbor. They will be joined by Hiyo in about 2 weeks time.
KB2 Akagi, Kaga, Ryujo, and Hosho are appraoching Rangoon after their successful raid along India's coast.
KB3 Shokaku, Zuikaku, Zuiho, and Shoho are at Noumea and shall be leaving to support Palymra Operation soon.

March 16, 1942

SS Have nearly 20+ SS in Kwajelein. They will be dispatched again in about a week.
Have nearly 10 SS in Rangoon resting and getting ready to go back out and raid IO.
Almost 15 SS sitting in Noumea getting ready to raise havoc along Aussie Coast

Tjilitjap, Jv 15F 26B hit AF

Manila 31F 35DB, 7B hit AF Lose 3 planes

Cooktown, Aust 24Z 6B shot down 4 Wirraway

ABDA FB hit Tjilitjap with 13 planes in inflict 13 Cas

Deliberate Attack at Changsha! 0-1 Forts 9 Japanese take 6666 cas, 195 Guns, and 4 Vehicles
Chinese lose 4625, 132 Guns Ratio: Japan 1232 to China's 4385. The ratio, as Moses asked, is coming DOWN. It was at nearly 10,000 when I started keeping track. Supply has GOT to be causing him issues...

Due to a comment Wolfpack made about Changsha and me 'butting my head' against a brick wall, I decided to check out my unit experience. EVERY unit in Changsha or at Wuhan recovering is at 95-99% Experience! HOLY COW!

I am tired of attacking once a week. There are five rested divisions in Wuhan at 80-85% strength and I order them to Changsha. The Chinese will get 3 days to rest and then they will be hit again. I pull out two brigades from Changsha that are at about 2/3 strength. Let us see what happens how!

Navy
Lots of movement but no action.

March 17, 1942

SS No action.

Air
China
Changsha hit by 45F and 92B AF
Sweep Chungking again! 53Z vs. 9 Hurricanes---for 2Z, I shot down ALL 9!
Kunming 21F 9B get 2 Resources A new BF is offloading at Hanoi to aid my planes there. Should help raise the Bomber total.

Akyab, Bur 35F and 82B hit AF and do 11 Cas

Manila 9B hit AF and get 11 Cas lose 1 Plane

Cooktown 24Z and 6B shoot down 2 of 4 Wirraway.

35,85 35B 103 Cas

Land
Land at Nukufetau Island and take it.

Bombardments:
Tjilitjap, Jv 6 Cas
Changsha 130 Cas
Nandi, Fi 33 Cas

Deliberate Attack at Khota Bharu 1-1 Forts Fall to 1 120 Jap for 29 Brit. Order them to rest and will finish them in a day or two.

Navy
More movement but no action.

KB1 is almost at DH and will then go raiding!

Dispatch KB3 from Noumea to support Palmyra Operation.

Have 6 Convoys unloading or about to unload at Kwajelein. The build-up for Eastern Wind is getting seriously started!

SS I moved I-19 closer to Johnson Island to recon the base with a Glen. Don't like invading an island blind! The SS did that and then an ASW Group tried to attack it. 2DD and 4DMS attack and miss. I order the SS home to Kwajalein.

Air
China
Kunming 21F and 9B damage 2 Resources New BF unloading at Hanoi will help get more planes on target there. I have 1 Daitai of Oscars and 2 Daitai of Helens there.
Chungking 147B with all those Hurricanes shot down, I send all my Wuhan bombers against Chungking and take out 35 Resources! That has to hurt. Order normal Changsha attack for tomorrow.
Changsha My Oscars (3 Daitai) are now on LCAP and have been intercepting IL-4s trying to bring in supply to the city. This discovery leads me to understand how the city has been getting supply. Will add some Zeros to this detail!

Akyab, Bur I am a litttle paranoid here so I sweep it with 78F--no resistance.
A bombing raid of 30F and 82B nail the AF and cause 10 Cas

Tjilitjap, Jv 17F and 19B hit AF

Manila is struck by 32F, 30DB, and 9B. They hit the AF and cause 10 Cas. Lose 1Pl.

Ground
Shock Attack at Tjilitjap, Jv 0-1 442J--185D Grrrrrr... Getting tired of these guys holding.

19,60 Hex next to Batavia, my troops catch-up to the refugees from there. Bombardment attack gets 104 Cas. Set for Deliberate Attack tomorrow. "Keep up the skeer!"

Bombardment Changsha for 124 Cas

Australia
35,85 SW Darwin 118 Cas from the Sparrow Battalion
22,88 4th Mixed Reg attacks a BF and gets 41 Cas

Troops loading at Kwajalein and Canton for invasions of Palmyra and Johnson Island. More details below.

Navy
I have a number of raiding TF appraoching their targets right now. Tomorrow should see sweeps of the following ports: Anchoragex2, Brisbane, and Sydney. Each TF is large enough to handle itself but not TOO large to pull away from Eastern Wind. We'll see if we bag anything at these ports. I show ships at all three!

I decided to do a seperate post on the opening moves for the Hawaii Operation (Eastern Wind). The first invasion convoys are loading and I want to detail what will be happening.

To be taken by April 1, 1942--before Invasion bonus ends:
Palmyra Invasion Force 4 SNLF and/or Naval Guard Units plus a large Base Force
Johnson Island Invasion Force 5 SNLF and/or Naval Guard Units plus two large BF

Covering Forces:
Palmyra Cover Force 1CA, 2CL, and 7DD
Johnson Island Cover Force 2BB (Ise and Hyuga), 1CA, 1CL, 3DD

Eastern Wind Attack Force
KB3--Shokaku, Zuikaku, Zuiho, and Shoho Rr-Adm Yamaguchi Tamon
84Z, 48V, 72K=204 planes 11 Escorts

The Attack Force is coming NE from Noumea.

I plan to land at Palmyra first and the next day at Johnson. KB3 will sit between the Islands and react to any response from Wolfpack.

Each Cover Force will change to bombardment during the final run in.

I have a force of 4 Daitai of Zeros, 3 Daitai of Bettys, and 1 Daitai of Kates ready to immediately provide the captured bases some teeth against counter-attack. More planes are on the way but this is what is ready.

RECON shows just about 1000 troops at each site. I figure a BF and nothing else. Despite this, you will note that I am packing enough firepower to handle a doubling or tripling of that intelligence.

Comments???

I John, well I just saw your AAR today, the title "3 months of summary" draw my eyes, too much AAR to follow all of them.

For taking PH (with a landing around the 15th January and KB around almost since the day one, so no sizeable reinforcement), I used five divisions, 3 or 4 Eng Rgt, all IJN BB save 2 and all CV/CVL/CVE. And about 5-6 land-based bomber units. And I took more than a month. I think you will have problems. Also the Zero bonus is gone (or will be soon) and I think you will have problems neutralizing PH. Better forts, probably more troops, less air superiority, less forces commited on your side... don't seem good. Also my troops were all prepared for PH starting from day 1.

My idea was to seize Lahaina and to bring a Naval HQ and ARs (well actually the only AR Japan starts with) here, so I have a place to put my damaged ships.

PH is awfully away from Japan and I had at any time 150-200k fuel and supplies going there. If you have not taken Midway, the path to PH is even longer. Send

Were I your opponent, I will play the porcupine. Set all my air units range 0 (except the PBY for naval search), naval attack for bombers, CAP 100% for fighters, and put my BB in port and wait. If KB raided the port or the airfield CAP and AA will deal it severe losses and then LBA may attack KB. If they don't but Japan tries to invade, bombers will hit them and then you can sortie your BB and engage in night battles. Will be bloody but you own ships will be docked at once while the best Japanese port is thousand of miles away.

Also I understood you advanced already in SOuth Pacific and took Noumea. So the first place where Allied troops may go is PH. As for pre-recon landings, I use Nells and Emilies, they are great for that.

Take Johnston at the same time as Palmyra, you can base here Nell/Betties/Emilies and then fly recon over Hawaii.

Admiral Laurent,

I greatly appreciate your thoughts and comments. Earlier in the AAR and in a thread about 'Strategic Decisions in Feb 1942,' I went into this thought process in great detail. A lot of people jumped into that conversation providing their .02! All of it was welcome. Operation Eastern Wind is designed to be stopped at any point. First Step is to grab Palmyra, Johnson, and Midway. From there, I will recon and find out what he has there.

The basic problem is that Wolfpack has not FOUGHT anywhere and has withdrawn everything from EVERYWHERE. I have created the Empire for next to no casualties. Having said this, I need to force him into battle SOON. I debated Australia, India, and PH. Best thought for forcing an engagement is to threaten Pearl Harbor. I am after the US Fleet. If I can grab anything else, then great. I WANT HIS FLEET!

What do you think?

It is now March 22, 1942 and Operation Eastern Wind is fully underway! I have all Convoys on their way for Phase One objectives. Here is the array of forces being thrown into the operation:

Palymra Invasion Force (20,000 Troops) w/Covering Force 1BB (Haruna), 1CA, and 5DD

Johnson Island Invasion Force (25,000 Troops) w/Covering Force 2BB (Yamashiro/Hyuga), 1CL, and 3DD

Midway Island Invasion Force (20,000 Troops) w/Covering Force 1CA, 1CL, 3DD

Recon has consistently shown a single BF of around 1000 men+ at each island. Taking no chances, I am sending 3-4 small Infantry units (SNLF/Naval Guard) and at least one major BF for each objective. Each convoy is carrying about 15,000 in supply as well.

Striking Forces

KB3 Shokaku, Zuikaku, Zuiho, and Shoho are covering Palmyra and Johnson Island.

KB1 Hiryu, Soryu, and Junyo have the Midway sector.

14 SS are operationally covering the approaches.

I have 4 Daitai of Zero, 4 Daitai of Betty, and assorted support planes (some Vals/Kates) ready to move and protect these aquisitions.

This is the largest operation since the commencement of hostilities. I want these three islands before the Invasion Bonus runs out.

There are 3 Inf Div at or approaching Kwajalein and they are already prepping for a laning at Kona, Hawaii.

Subject Change: I forgot to mention when I captured Khota Bharu on the 19th, the next day saw 10,000 British Troops surrender!

I am getting nervous. Eastern Wind is now fully underway and I know things will begin to happen tomorrow. I think the planning is sound and my forces adequate but am understandably nervous.

March 23, 1942

SS I have four SS deployed three hexes NE of Palmyra.
8 more SS are beginning to deploy in front of them.
5 SS will begin to spread out in front of Johnson Island in about two days

Air
China
Yenen 24Z 76B 18 Resources Yenen has one more raid's worth of resources left. I will then shift targets...
Chungking 27Z 122B 32 Resources Damage I spot 125 planes there and shift my strike for tomorrow to an AF attack. Perhaps I can destroy a few planes on the ground...

Set all my Java air to attack Badeong next round.

Akyab 3F 13B AF

Manila, Phil 9F 13B 84DB Hit AF/Port, do 64 Cas, and lose 3 planes

Australia 36,87 71B 61 Cas

To distract Wolfpack, I Recon EVERY major port in eastern IO. Columbo, Trimcomalee, Diamond Harbor, Madras, etc... Should make him take notice...

Ground
Landing at Sampit, Born, Merauke, NG, 29,76 Timor, and Sydney Island

Hsinyang, CH China Bombard 15 Jap Cas

Shock Attack at Tjilitijap, JV 5-1!!! 4 Units surrender--645 Jap Cas for 6595 Dutch POWs!

Set my forces at Badeong, JV to attack for the first time tomorrow.

Spot five Aussie units at the Crossroads Hex of 36,88. My 18th ID is close and will investigate.

Navy
My Palmyra Invasion Force will land tomorrow.

KB3 is about 2 days away. I want Wolfpack to think I am landing without CV Support. Perhaps I can draw him out...

KB1 is moving southwards and will arrive NE of Hawaii in about 3 days. I hope to maybe catch a convoy or something...

WOLFPACK DEVELOPMENTS Wolfpack is in the process of responding to me in two different areas.

Hsinyang, CH He has 11 Corps investing Hsinyang, CH. I have reinforced this town and have 2000 Assault Points with Fort 9. There will be two Armored Regiments to go there as well.

Australia He has five units at the Crossroads and I am not sure as to their strength. Need to find out pretty quick! It might behoove me to find out, retreat, and try to draw him northwards towards Darwin and get in behind him from Broome/Derby. Might try that after Java falls.
