What, if any, organization in the US Army is the descendant of the Army of Potomac? Also, same question for the Army of Northern Virginia. Very specifically, when was the US Army 1st division formed? What about the 29th division?

thanks for any help you can give me.

I am pretty sure the 1st Div. was formed around 1915-17 along with the 29th.

The 29th was nicked named the Blue and Gray Div. Units combined to make up the division had been drawn from regiments that had lines back to both north and south of the ACW.

As for the 1st IIRC was formed from units drawn from the southwest

I thought also that the 29th Div was made of a lot of Guard units from Central Virginia in the the 17 corridor. I know there is a memorial in Bedford, VA that recognizes that they lost the highest percentage of soldiers from their hometown unit on D day. Route 17 is the 29th division memorial highway.

A quick googling produced this:

Thanks for the info guys. Also, weren't 1st and 29th the divisions that landed on Omaha Beach? The website has some good information about the 116th regiment which claims to be the "Stonewall Birgade." I guess the 29th can claim a little bit of lineage to the AoNV.
