There is a book titled"A battle history of the Imperial Japanese Navy 1941-1945" written by Paul S Dull it is a truly excellent book it has a detailed battle report of just about every battle the Kaigun took part in. would also be a great reference for any new guys as to how to use the japanese navy ships in TF's since it has a complete list of which ships were used in each battle. I will make a thread later on today with a list of my personal collection of books that will possibly help anyone wanting to learn the history of the pacific war.

Cool, I will have to check it out. While on the subjects of books, I've ready a lot of books on WW2. And there is only 1 that I have read more than anyother.

It's "An Army at Dawn" by Rick Atkinson. It's about the US in the African Campaign. A must have. I am anxiously awaiting the second book in the series which is entitled "The Liberation Triology." I am pretty sure the 2nd book is based on Italy and the 3rd on the invasion of Southern France.

i can't wait for the other two either. am reading SHATTERED SWORD THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY. mostly from the japanese view but very detailed and very readable. it has the aircraft elevator speeds for the 4 japanese carriers. (maybe someone could factor that into WitP..... just kidding JUST JKIDDING). explains how japanese carrier doctrine was different than ours, tactics, deck spotting, everything. explains some of the myths about the battle.

Hi guys.

Agreed. Atkinson's book is a very detailed and readable book. I'm also looking forward to the sequels. I thought the 2nd one was due out this year though.........

That's what is missing from the carrier fights - elevator speed. Instead of eliminating the zero bonus we could factor in the faster elevator speed of the US carriers to equalize... Oh, you were just kidding.

If your going to factor in elevater speed, don't forgot fuel pump capacity, # hoses etc. for fueling turn around.

I liked Atkinsons book, I think the sequel was delayed due to his Iraq book.

One fo my favorite WW2 history books is

It Never Snows in September: The German View of Market Garden and the Battle of Arnhem, September 1944

A very, very good German view of the Market Garden campaign - it is interesting to read their perspective on the battle. You walk away with a pretty amazing appreciation for Wehrmacht operational skill and flexibility.

I think the war in Iraq may have delayed it? He embedded with 101st & wrote In the Company of Soldiers.

Good book, I have it above my desk as "reference for current affairs" (ie WITP), but leaves some areas uncovered. It's like author was so sympathetic to the Japanese (Jap Fanboi, to use lingo from this board

) so as to be unable to write about IJN debacles from late war period.

But, since battles like Leyte are covered in great detail elsewhere, this is not critical.

Early IJN invasions are covered in great detail. Not only battles, like Java sea etc, but invasions - which were done relatively very primitively, compared to what USN did just 2-3 years later (specialised landing craft, large escorting and bombardment forces etc.)

All in all, reading the book made me appreciate WITP (which simulates operational considerations from the book *extremely* well), and also made me appreciate initial breakneck pace of Japanese advance (considering it was done with relatively modest means).

I agree, a very good book. Read that on our way to Europe a couple of years ago as prep for our driving tour of the Market Garden corridor.
