This AAR has had more hits than some of the of the other game threads that Matrix has ! 80,000 plus and still counting I would hope that Matrix would acknowledge this and maybe send you guys a T-shrit or something when you get to 100,000 hits.

More impressive, when you check the list of the biggest thread in all Matrix forums (90% of them about WITP), 3 of them (at least) are about this game, counting PzB' thread and those of his opponents.

The support from all those who follow this AAR is a great motivation for me!
Hope to see this game through to the end...a bit slow going this week. Dark and gloomy winter
days encourage slacking in the sofa more than anything else

Had a near disaster today! I ordered two of the carrier divisions to follow a stationary surface combat group.
Somehow this surface group follow a transport TF into Kavieng So for a full day 8 carriers stayed in the Kavieng
base hex *angst* Bad weather covered the fleet during the afternoon and only a small fighter bomber strike came in
before noon.

So instead of a disaster almost 2 full divisions are ready to unload tomorrow. Size 1500 transports unload pretty quickly
in a size 3 port.

The only really bad news today was caused by an enemy sub: the carrier Junyo took a hit and has to return to Truk.
Damage is mediocre: low thirties sys damage + some light flooding and fires.

4E bombers should be restricted to do naval attacks. They hit even barges. Looks like they are more accurate than modern anti ship missiles.

Heavies should be less accurate Castor Troy - hope they do something to adjust it one day.
Will try to live with it until then...

An enemy division has marched into Lae - the place is a wreck and the few defending troops completely
destroyed by enemy air strikes. Will only take a small broom stick squad to clear the town square...

Afraid a 10 man squad north of Lae will prevent the units from retreating towards Madang
Ground combat is what pains me the most in WitP!

The Hiyo ended up with 46 sys damage. Still 5 fires aboard. She's out for the rest of the year. Can live
with that. I will place the KB in Truk for now!

Another crack division is being moved from Balikpapan to Truk - may need it both in New Guinea and Kavieng.
Not sure I'm strong enough to finish of the Allied troops that recently landed in the latter!? Tempted to try in a few
days, assault value should exceed 1100 or so.

Assault strength at Kavieng

There are now some 65k troops at Kavieng with an assault strength of some 1100. I will try to hurt the Allied troops
there a bit....Anyway, Kavieng is a no go zone for Andy. He will have to crack my perimeter line at New Guinea in order to outflank it.
That should be a long and winding road as there are several bases with high assault values and 9 levels of fortifications there.

The thought has entered my mind Honda...but I'm not sure how viable it is!
Nevertheless, I intend to test Andy's resolve. If he wavers I will crush his expeditionary Army.

The risks are considerable: how many troops will I be able to save and how many ships will it cost me?
Fortunately I got vast numbers of transports available. Losses have been negligible thus far in the war.

I would also like to see how well large number of LCU units will stand up against Allied air attacks. As you can
see from the last screenie there are 17 potential targets at Kavieng - I don't think it's possible to reduce them all.
It also seems like heavy fortifications make troops less vulnerable to attacks from the air!?

One question: I got the 14th Army HQ at Rabaul - will it lend support to the struggle at Kavieng 2 hexes away?
(Too lazy to read the manual:-)

Nope, you need to send the 14th to Kavieng to have any effect. The subordinate HQ's really only help if they are in the combat hex.

Is Kavieng in the command radius of a major HQ? With objective set to Kavieng?

This will help the troops there.

Check the 14th Army's command range. If it's a corps HQ then probably not 'cause their range is 1, effectively 0 (only the local hex).

ORIGINAL: PzB

The 14th Army is a "Corps-type HQ" with a range of 1, counting its own hex. That means that he is only helping units in the same hex. On the other hand, having the Southern Army HQ in Truk may help, as it has range 9.

And yes forts reduced damage and disruption caused by air attacks. Allied air power won't be able to disrupt all your units.

About bombardment TF they are very bad against ground troops, your BB will be better used to draw Allied bombers away from easier targets. Set them as a surface TF, so you will have better results in case you meet some ships, and avoid PT TF (or send small TF of DD to chase them).

Bombard the Allied troops in Kavieng to see what is there, but in your situation I will try to kill them. You will probably never have such an opportunity again.

Then it is as I assumed...Corps type HQ = range 1. But I do have the Southern Area Army HQ at Truk, 8 hexes away.
Unfortunately it's set to Truk - but that can be changed. So I will not attempt to send in additional HQs. Those I have in reserve will be needed later on.

Possible that you're right Laurent, but I will attempt one last thing: to bombard Kavieng with 3 battleship TFs at once. Turn already in my inbox.
Also ordered my Army bombers to hit Kavieng - wasn't any LRCAP yesterday. Andy will be hard pressed to keep a heavy fighter screen over his troops
for weeks and weeks

I also agree with your assesment about Kavieng - I do wish to eliminate the enemy troops here. The question is whether I can bring in enough troops.
How many men do I need to force 30k of the enemies best troops to surrender? To achieve this the retreat hex to Samo will also have to be blocked.
In regard to bombardment attacks: I don't want to alarm Andy before I have to. He hasn't 'probed' my defenses since reinforcements arrived. Does he know
that 2 of my best divisions with 99 exp and 99 morale just arrived?

Thx for the input everyone, appreciate it as alawsy

What are the units that landed there ? 30 000 men are less than two divisions, I will say around 500-600 AP. And they are probably short of support, short of supply, with no forts... I won't be surprised if their real power is between 100 and 200 APs. Actually Andy's plan is probably to land supplies in Samo so it will flow to Kavieng.

If you have another division available, or a Bde, I will land it between Samo and Kavieng to cut the supplies and the retreat path of the Allied forces. Or you may attack Samo, but it depends of the forces there. But I think using a division as a blocking force along a jungle trail is not gamey.

Then I think your 1100 AP in Kavieng will be enough to destroy the invading force before it could be reinforced.

Southern area Army can have PPs for Tokyo and it wouldn't matter. What matters is that it's in range of Kavieng. The HQ will help.
Although naval bombardments aren't most effective against combat troops I would keep doing them if I could. The only reason is SUPPLY! If you can destroy the enemy's supply and keep yours you did 80% of the work. Troops mean nothing without supply.
Just keep Kavieng supplied. Not to much (so that losses to enemy bombing are lessened) and not to little (don't let the boys starve). When you put everything in place, make sure you're attack comes in when all your assult troops are in green supply and try to sacrifice some fighters for CAP to disrupt his bombers on that deciding turn.

Ordered a bombardment attack on Kavieng for tomorrow, will take a screenie of it and evaluate the
enemy formation. As far as I can remember they include a Marine Division, parts of the Americal division,
a couple of TD battalions and two SeaBee units.

Our own troops are now resting to remove fatigue and disruption. The plan is to launch our two Para Regiments
+ a para SNLF unit against Sami. A fast transport will unload a large Naval Guard Unit on the path between Kavieng
and Sami. That should be enough to prevent an enemy retreat.

I do have enough supplies to cover the minimum requirements, will be difficult to raise them further. Another dozen enemy
PT boats appeared today - too late to hit my transports, they only got a single barge. After 1-2 days they will be out of fuel
and easy prey.

Several addition surface combat groups have reached Truk as it's pretty obvious were the enemys 'schwerepunkt' is.
For now it seems like a job for the Army supported by the light flight and air force.

Recon flights have registered an increasing number of enemy units at Tarawa.
Today two large transport TFs including LCUs were spotted. Together with consistent bombing
of Majuro I suspect a renewed enemy offensive in this area.

If Andy would like to split his attention that's fine with me! Not going to put up a lot of reistance to begin
with. Got some nice atolls with 9 forts for him to chew on. Be my guest!-)

Attaching a screenie with info about the troops at Kavieng!

The plan is to attack tomorrow after the following preparations have been carried out:

1. Fast transport lands troops between Samo and Kavieng.
2. Transports drop paras at Samo
3. Fast transports bring in 5000 supplies to Kavieng
4. 3 cargo ships will attempt to unload additional suplpies
5. Bombardment group hits Kavieng protectec by an anti PT boat TF
6. Some Oscars will be placed on LRCAP over Kavieng

I need one piece of advice from you: Should I attempt a shock attack immediately
or attempt a deliberate attack? The Allied troops may be dug in an a failed shock attack will
be costly - but it may also be what is needed to defeat the enemy.

So what is best?

Had to take the difficult decision regarding a deliberate/shock attack at Kavieng myself!
I chose the former: I don't expect the Allied troops to cave in that easily and further efforts will most
likely be needed. A full division will arrive at Truk in 1-2 days.

The 'Mini KB' has now arrived at Truk - some 21 odd carriers there. The Hiyo will be moved to Hong Kong as
soon as possible. The Kaga is down to 26 sys. Will provide her with a 48 ac Zero group - currently trained to 71 exp.
A crack torpedo bomber group + some dive bombers will complement them.

Weather has been so poor over China and the Philippines lately that large number of trained ac are stuck at Hong Kong.
Trying to only move them in clear or partly clouded weahter. This is difficult when there are 20-30 successive days of rain and t-storms
over half the Pacific.

Coastal defense units are now in place from Palau to Iwo Jima + Truk and Rabaul. The remaining units can be found on the Home Islands
and in India.

Situation Map: Counterattack!

The map shows the multi pronged operation:

1. Bombardment group against Kavieng + destroyers screen
2. Fast transport TF will unload a large Naval Guard unit on the path between Kavieng and Samo
3. Surface combat groups will attack enemy transports at Lae and Dobadura
4. Heavy CAP has been provided over ships at Emirau and Admirality Islands.
5. Oscars will LRCAP Kavieng...RIP
6. 234 transports will airlift my airborne division to Samo

Only the fast transport TF with supplies will not arrive on schedule. It was still loading at Truk.
All the troops at Kavieng has been set to deliberate attack. Supply level: 6600 (6200 needed)

Forecast for tomorrow: rain - let's hope Kavieng is shrouded in!

I've put careful patrol commanders in command of the Oscar unit on LRCAP over Kavieng. Will a leader
with very low aggression rating turn back early?

I don't like to use small LCUs to cut of enemy retreat routes - but a para division + a large SNLF unit should
suffice in my opinion!

To be honest I don't expect this attack to provide more than 1-1 odds in this first assault. Resistance will
most likely be stiff to being with - but as usual: Resistance is futile: prepare to be assimilated

I will launch a deliberate attack first. It it fails (ie achieve 0 to 1), a shock attack will fail too. It the deliberate attack succeeds at 1 to 1 or more, do a shock attack the next day, there is no way your opponent may react before this.

Also don't know from where these Corsairs come from but your BB will be better used to blast them on the ground rather than pounding troops. Of course if their main base is Gasmata it will be difficult.

Think we are in agreement Laurent!
I can't reach his 'Corsair bases' at Gasmata, Green and Buin islands without putting my ships
at risk. Also very difficult to destroy these planes as they're mostly on escort missions.

Must say that today was a very good day!

1. Surface battles at Lae and Dobadura bagged several transports + a destroyer and msw
2. Para drop over Samo was a great success. The base was captured with a 2-1 odds and 2000 enemy prisoners taken
3. A Naval Guard unit was successfully landed on the path between Kavieng and Samo leaving the Allied 'prisoners' at Kavieng completely isolated
4. The deliberate attack against Kavieng achieved a 2-1 odds: not enough to force the enemy to surrender but we're on the right path
5. An enemy para attack against Majuro was repulsed

Massive air strikes today and more landings at Majuro today.
Just another two days and we can put another division ashore at Kavieng. Will
mount from Emirau this time under a very heavy CAP!

Need a good and rainy day and a little respite from the aerial terror before I can
launch another ground attack!

There are now 21 carriers with 933 ac aboard in Truk..if I only had something to use
them on. If I get involved with 30 Corsairs we'll loose 150 trained pilots

I hope we'll be there soon Honda

Preparations are proceeding well and I hope to exterminate the Allied bridgehead within
a week or so. Supplies up to 8000 after the large Tokyo Express dropped of its load. Again
the PT boats arrived too late.

Several task forces of destroyers and cruisers have arrived at Truk - most of the Combined Fleet
can be found here now. Sending out several ASW groups, several subs have been spotted in the area.

Some 300 trained Zekes, Tojos and Tonys and some 100 Bettys are being moved from China/Philippines
towards Truk.

Another tactical success! The 18th division and parts of the 5th Kure SNLF and the 16th division
are currently unloading at Kavieng. Several ships were hit by enemy search planes but casualties were light.

Assault strength has increased to 1300 - and still plenty of troops left in the ships. Another couple of days
and we're ready to start exterminating the Allied beach head.

Regarding the ariel mining. Seems like a massive exploit if used against bases with fighters. Could you both maybe come to some agreement over this as it seems massively gamey. even more than sending in PT's with paddles.

Speaking of which is he starting to run low on PT boats too. you seem to kill them in huge quantaties !

Good luck at Gasmata ! .. loks like a very good choice for a counterattack .. hehe another dead Marine will severely hurt future attacks. also 2 seebees must help a lot too .

Hats off to you

The problem is that bases are closed and then reopened at a regular basis. Think we now are in agreement about this!
PT boats is a much bigger problem really! They're re-spawning like barges and each time I chop of a head two new ones pop out
They're a true wonder weapon indeed.

I'm afraid I will have to reduce the Allied troops at Kavieng piece by piece. While a base can be captured and the defenders forced to
surrender with a 2-1 odds it's an entirely different thing to force an invader into submission. Well, if I can destroy the units as offensive
weapons I will have achived something.

Ok September 1943 here we come...

A quiet turn... Most of my fleet is in port and Kavieng got 15k supplies. Enough to
continue operations for another few days.

The next week will show how feasible it is to destroy the enemy troops at Kavieng.
Results have not been encouraging but I guess it's always hard going to begin with.
Finishing of a bridge head without air superiority never succeeded during WWII .

We do have naval superiority but unfortunately battleship guns only seem to affect engineers.
The Germans in Normandy found them extremely effective as far as I can remember!

I'm sure you already know this - but the more aircraft you have reconning a base, the more effective a bombardment is

I've seen some truly scary bombardments occur when you have two or three squadrons reconning a base at once.
