In anticipation of the (ever) impending release of what seems to be a great game, I have been thinking about my opening moves in my initial draft for my new league. I want to avoid the mistakes that my dear Detroit Lions (PLEASE fire Matt Millen and sell the team, Mr. Ford!) have repeated over and over again. I think Mike Ditka said it best on a post game show after the Thanksgiving debacle, "It's time that they drafted for what plays good, instead of what looks good." In this light, and in a spirited attempt to turn discussion away from the "when is this thing coming out?" and "Please David, add this new idea to the game", I am putting out my list of most important positions. Keep in mind that I want to draft for a run-to-set-up-the-pass type offense and run-stopping defense.

Position Focus
1. OT Run Blocking
2. HB Agility
3. QB Intelligence
4. MLB Tackling
5. FS Hitting/Tackling
6. G Run Blocking
7. WR Speed
8. DT Strength/Tackling
9. C Run Blocking
10. OLB Speed
11. DE Agility/Strength
12. OT Run Blocking
13. FB Run Blocking
14. CB Hands
15. DT Tackling
16. G Run Blocking
17. SS Intelligence
18. OLB Speed
19. WR Hands
20. DE Tackling
21. CB Speed
22. TE Run Blocking
23. K Accuracy
24. P Kicking Strength

I think this sets up well for an over powering running game that can stretch the field with a long pass 4-5 times a game for the big play. Also, with speed at the corners and strength in the middle, the defense should limit big plays and occasionaly produce game changing situations. Genius or Knuckle-Head...I'm thick skinned!

Capt.

I agree with your list for the most part but would swap 1-4, and 14-18. May even pick my linebackers earlier if there was a run on them.

For me I ran a 4-3 in Sierra and so most likely will do that here. Big smart uglies up front in the 4 and mean smart uglys in the 3.

Offensively give me a Christian Okoye and an Eddie George backfield and the TE I can swap out. I agree with you that an intelligent QB is the key to the offense. They will have to be picked early to avoid having to pick an immoble vet or not ready youngster.

I like the running empasis as it keeps the opponents offense off the field and eats the clock. The downside is if you get burned early and have to play catch up.

Sitting waiting patiently, no seriously I am, for the release.

I have always run a 3-4 in football games and will do so again here. I make sure that I have speedy outside linebackers, as they are my main pass rushers. The linemen are run stuffers. I agree with the offensive line being key but the real key will be, can we actually run the ball in this game? Most games it's very difficult to run the football with success.
