Nothing is easier than self-deceit. For what each man wishes, that he also believes to be true.

Does that include Pasternakskis? Or is there a special exemption for them?

Isn't it better to wish and believe the best than to anguish in misery?

Why don't you ask the originator of the quote (translated, of course, from the original Greek)? I can't tell you his name, but his initials are "Demosthenes."

Am I supposed to have a seance or something? I'd only spoil his fun anyway since I'd ask him if it applied to Demostheneses too.

Surely you don't object to a generic wish of a little good cheer!

Don't be so sure. A man walking down the street in a town here in Denmark yesterday said "Happy New Year!" to a passer-by, and got beaten to a pulp.

Of course not. I merely quoted from the real Demosthenes (in translation), something I have done three times now, and you haven't recognized any of them.

So, what is it about Demosthenes that led you to adopt his name as your forum moniker? You apparently are not familiar with his writings...

Oh, by the way, Harpy New Year.

I recall in my childhood that New Year was a 'north of the border thing' only celebrated by the heathen scots!

Now its a BIG EVENT.... Hmmmmmm.

Ahh I see!

There were actually two Demosthenes in ancient Athenian history - one was a famous orator - (Demosthenes (384 BC–322 BC) is generally considered the greatest of the Attic orators, and thus the greatest of all Ancient Greek orators. His writings provide an insight into the life and culture of Athens at this period of time) whom you quoted.

The other was an Athenian General - who's best speeches were made at spear-point, (Demosthenes, son of Alcisthenes, was an Athenian general during the Peloponnesian War, died 413 BC. ) whose name I borrowed.

I see our confusion! You went to school and learned about the learned men of the ages, I just studied warfare!

Demosthenes
