CLOSED AAR, sentries have been posted at the doors with orders to shoot TommyG on sight!

First turn rules
Unhistoric first turn.
1)No port attacks other than Pearl Harbor allowed during turn 1 (No Manilla or Singapore)
2) No Japan landing that rounds Singapore to land at Johore and cut off Malaya from supplies.
3) Japan forces may land elsewhere than they historically did.
4) Allies cannot give orders to any ground or air units except for China Command units on turn one. Allies can give any construction or HQ change orders
5) Allies may only give orders to ships that are at sea already on turn one.
6) Weather in turn one is supposed to be clear during turn one. Major airstrikes that abort due to weather turn one trigger restart.

General rules:

PDU Rules - if playing with PDU on (which we are), no converting 2E bomber squads to 4E for allies. Similarly, Japan player must not load light bomb squadrons with heavy bombers.
ASW TFs max 6 ships until 1944, then 8
No rearming/refueling cap ships in port size less than 3.
PT boats must be in PT boat only TFs, unless needing replenisment ships when transferring long distance.
Japanese home defence units, Kwangtung army units, and China expeditionary units must pay political points to transfer to new HQ if they are to leave their respective areas. Air units in these areas may strike targets outside of their HQ area.
No skip bombing (sending medium-heavy bombers to naval attack at an altitude lower than 6K feet) until 1/43
Japan must garrison resources captured with units that have an assault value.
No allied carrier capable units (Marine squadrons) on carriers till 1/44
No creating Barges / PT Boats at bases smaller than 3 or that are behind enemy lines - cut off. It is unrealistic to have new PT boats magically appear at bases behind enemy lines without having to sail there and be subjected to enemy attack

1st turn went as normal I suppose, 4 BBs in pearl heavily damaged and probably sunk. He's already gone and violated the house rules by moving BBs out of pearl on turn one to the west coast, along with other ships in different areas. Gamey as hell, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt because KB is in hot pursuit. Much shipping in the SCS gets beat on by Jap LBA. Clark field and Singers pummeled. Baby KB and a surface BB TF are south of Indochina waiting for shipping to come to them. Things I've done differently are reinfore the Malayan landings, cancel Legaspi and land in Mindanao, cancel Wake, and capture Canton. I have fighters and Kates on the way to Canton, along with aviation support and additional troops and supplies. After KB is done lurking around Pearl (probably 1-3 days from now) I plan on swinging her southwest (or at least a portion of her) around Hawaii to cover Canton. If I feel I can hold it a week or more from now I may move additional ac in and base cap ships there. We'll see

Production wise, I've converted all Nate production to Zeros. I've also halted Shinano and the 2nd Yamato.

Comments are wanted, as this is my first PBEM!

So what's everybody using to take screens?

Pacific
I figure out that my Nells are hitting Wake without escort still. No more of that. Supplies and AC on their way to Canton. I've given up on his BBs he pulled out of Pearl turn one. KB needs the gas anyways. Not sure where she goes afterwards...Need to figure that out. A surface TF off to Canton just in case.

Malaya
Again, I figure out Nells are hitting Singapore unescorted. I've had to stand them down because of morale. Oscars, Nates, and a squadron of dive bombers now forward based in Malaya with the objective of hitting shipping on the west side of the penninsula. His bombers are in for a nasty surprise if they try to hit me at Khota again. One of my subs puts two torps into an MSW (OUCH) and then gets DC'd in return for 75 FLT .

PI
The AF at Clark is done with, and doesn't have much based there. Bombers shifting to targeting ground forces in same hex. He sinks one of my subs off of Manila. Must try not to leave subs in shallow hexes.

In other new, 12 Idas beat a ML off HK into a pulp. My pilots and submariners must have something against MSWs and MLs...

As for the big picture, I don't plan on going to the DEI until I've established forward bases in the PI and have Singapore contained. Then I put the hurt on the Dutch AC there.

I just use poor mans tools ... CNTL-PRTSc .. then open MS Paint ... then CNTL-V ... the go from there ... others use fancier packages. Biggest problem with poor mans solution is the color RED looks fuzzy ... otherwise it seems to work well enough ... but if you want serious answer you can either search for prior threads, or ask on main forum ... this question has been asked and answered several times out there ...

He's already gone and violated the house rules by moving BBs out of pearl on turn one to the west coast, along with other ships in different areas.

That's just not right. Despite being an allied fanboy I hope you catch his CVs early, or something.

I'm a newb to PBEM too, but can say a couple things:

1. I'm playing the same scenario as allied & lost Canton Island first turn. There's just not much he can send at it early (believe me I looked.) He won't (or shouldn't) be loading anything in Pearl yet with KB nearby. He could maybe strip So Pac, but it would take a week or more to get transports to where he'd need to load them. His CVs could hit the shipping in the area, but you should be safe on the ground there for a little while. Maybe place a surface TF somewhere close in case he tries a small invasion - have you taken Tarawa yet?

2. My opponent successfully sunk lots of allied shipping with bombers from Jolo. If you're not already planning to, I'd say take that soon.

3. In his shoes, I'd fear a second PH attack. He can't have many planes ready to fly. While the AA might be bad for you, It'd help make sure those BBs sink. With 4 on their way to west coast, the remaining ones will be attacked more often. They can (the BBs) absorb a lot of punishment & still float.

My 2 cents, probably worth less than that.

I use the poor man's screenshot tool too.

1) Surface TF has been there for a few turns. In about two turns I think I'll have around 200 assault points there. My goal is to place an annoying enough force on Canton and get his CVs to come out. I haven't taken Tarawa, and may not. If I do there'll just be a token force there. I'm trying to build up Canton.

2) I fu*ked that up. Made a noob mistake and sent troops along with others to Jolo to disembark in a jungle hex in Mindanao. I've figured out it'll take them a week to move out of there, so I'm just reloading them and landing them at the base near Cagayan. Butuan I think? Cagayan's already level 4+ AF I believe so I'll start there.

3) KB's hitting Midway this turn, Wake next, and then perhaps back to PH.

UPDATE

Malaya
I've finally taken Khota Baru. Bombers and fighters based there, and the reinforcement division starts unloading there tommorow. He's running low on AC here. A damn Dutch sub though has gotten lucky twice in the past today's with a loaded AP and a DD of the ASW TF sent to hunt it. Hopefully they or my Lilly's on ASW will nail it. I've sent baby KB to Saigon to upgrade to Zeros so they will be useful against the Dutchies.

China
Just trying to keep roads open. Hongkong odds are now 1-1 with fort level 3.

PAC
Reinforcing Canton. Hitting Midway as mentioned above.

PI
I think he's getting low on AC here too. He apparently flew some P-40Es in to Manila, but I believe I've reduced that unit below half. Troops landed are advancing. I plan to reinforce with division from Shanghai. Also need to ship some supplies here.

See attached photo for intel screen if it worked :).

I had a purty picture of a sub attack, but apparently I didn't hit the prnt scrn button...

Malaya
Troops advancing from Khota, reinforcements/support arriving. My air deployed hear is hitting AKs that are attempting to go through the straits.

PI
Bombers hitting Manila AF stood down due to morale. Only 12 Allied fighters left in the PI according to my intel weenies. Mindanao was finally invaded with Butuan taken, a bombardment enroute to Cagayan along with infantry. Reinforcements/support heading to Luzon.

PAC
I have located a group of ships a few hexes SE of PH that may be his carriers. We'll see. KB supposed to hit PH if weather doesn't ground the planes.

China
Again, just trying to keep roads open. I'll start mass available forces next turn, forgot again... HK is STILL holding out .

Noob question
Could someone please explain why my infantry/engineer/support units have a build rate of 0? How do I fix this?

Thanks for reading. Hi mom!

That's an easy one ( for a change ) !

Because (A) this is a PRODUCTION=ON game and (B) you are playing the Japanese !

You will receive replacements into your units ( turn replacements on for those you want to have replacements ) directly from the manpower, aramaments and vehicle pools.

What I do ( as Japanese ) is start the game by turning off ALL replacements and then selectively turning on the high priority units ( usually those making the major seige ... i.e. multi-turn ... attacks ) ...every now and then I again turn off replacements for all units ( call it "zero basing" if you like ) and then re-turn-on the high priority units.

Later in the war ( 43 on ) this system is no longer good .. by then you want to build up most of the garrisons that might be attacked ...but make sure you build up your aramements pool because it will take some major hits as your reinforcements in mid-1943 arrive ...

Thanks jwilkerson.

We're now at 12/19/05 in game.

Malaya
Driving towards Gtown and Kuantan for now. He's pulling troops out of Singapore, only some 15K left in Singapore. Several APs spotted around Palembang, hopefully they're not ending up there. Baby KB is striking his TFs in Singapore area, but has been withdrawn to Saigon to replinish, four zeros lost. Thank god for the zero bonus, or I would have lost a lot more. Must be more careful. Will probably combine with the other two baby carriers and use to support DEI operations soon.

Burma
Tavoy and Vic Point taken, garrisoning Tavoy. I hope he doesn't come to Burma, as I have nothing there.

PI
Battle for Cagayan soon, afterwards will move air here. Another divison will be landing in Naga in about a week. Support units heading south after landing in the north.

PAC
KB has withdrawn after after striking DDs and support ships south of Pearl. Going to Osaka to replenish lost aircraft. Sunk 3 ADs 3 ARs, a few AVDs and six DDs. Fighters arriving on Canton island. On the same turn one of my subs tagged a CA on the way to PH. May fly Nells out there. Will probably split KB into 2+2+2 or 3+3 carriers, keeping most in Pac hoping I spot his carriers while using the rest to hit DEI.

China
HK will fall within the week. I figured out that just hanging back and bombarding when units have high disruption/fatigue does wonders for the odds when you attack the next time.

Hong Kong falls! I'm confident Georgetown will fall tommorow. May have to wait for reinforcements that are already on the way to take Cagayan, a reserve divsion showed up to oppose my brigade and two SNLFs.

A very unlucky Dutch CL takes another (I think this is the second...) torpedo. Over the past few days De Ruyter has taken two air attacks and three sub attacks. I doubt she'll make port.

Happenings from 12/22/1941...

Ground combat at Cagayan

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 13840 troops, 99 guns, 18 vehicles

Malaya
Still advancing, Zero sweep over Singapore next turn. He's got circa 40 fighters there.

PAC
I find his carriers, the hard way. I was moving a cruiser TF to intercept a surface TF NW of Canton that got hit hard by his CVs. I only have a little more than 10 Zeros and Kates available on Canton each.

PI
Subs may be evac'ing his troops out of Cagayan.

The screenshot is of his CV aircraft hitting one of cruisers.

Malaya/DEI
Been cleaning up what transport activity I can in the Java Sea with two BB TFs. Two BBs had their paint scratched by 250 lb bombs, I'm sending them back to Saigon to replenish. It's too hot for them in Java anywho without any air support, TommyG might get lucky sooner or lander. Recon flights over Palembang have revealed there are 24 ground units there with lots of shipping activity. I guess I found out where he put all his troops that used to be in Singapore, though I had suspected he'd put them there. I'm planning on taking Kuching and basing lots of air there to hit all the air he's concentrated at Palembang, I don't think he has enough fighters there to properly protect his airfield.

PAC
His carriers are gone, last seen moving back to Pearl. KB is replenishing/repairing in Tokyo. Any advice on whether I should split KB and how? I was thinking 2 carriers (along with baby carriers at Palau, Saigon, and Sasebo) to the DEI the rest to the Pacific.

PI
More troops to Cagayan soon, then will attack. A division + support landing at Naga in about four days.

Whether to split KB or not is a fundamental question ...and I don't mean whether to run it has multiple closely supporting task forces, most do that ( versus 1 large TF ). But whether to have half off the large carriers in the East and half in the West during the period in question ( early 42 capture of SRA ). There are pros and cons to both.

If you think your opponent will get "feisty" with his carriers ( as he just did ! ) then having ALL your ( large ) carriers East would be indicateed.

If you think you must have, your big carriers in the SRA to be successful then having them their would be indicated.

If you think you must have heavy firepower in the East to stop an early offensive then that would be indicated.

You can only suffer a "defeat in detail" if you offer the opportunity, this would indicate not splitting real KB.

Most Japanese players seem to be able to get away with Baby KB in the East and all of real KB in the West for at least a while.

But bottom line, I don't think there is a one size fits all answer. You consider your plan and your expectations of your opponents actions and make a judgement call, in the seven runs through 1942 I've done in PBEM campaign games starts ... I've split ( real ) KB east and west with baby KB supporting one half or the other .. .and I've had baby KB east and all of real KB west ... my opponents have never been fiesty enough for me to get a shot at the American carriers early on - so there was no real advantage - given my plan - to have them East. But if say you are going for Noumean early .. then you may need all of KB East ... and so goes the analysis ...

What are the advantages of splitting KB into multiple CV TFs in the same hex?

Malaya
I'm advancing on Singapore, it's a matter of how fast my troops can walk themselves there. He has something like 8,000 men stationed at Singapore, none of which are infantry I would bet.

DEI
30 Ground units now spotted at P-bang. My air raids attrit his fighters, and he has some 70 bombers there also. I think the force I had planned for Kuching may take Tarakan instead (force contains two NLFs, construction units, and aviation support for some 250-350 AC, three flak units in case his bombers come to visit, and 40K supplies). Out of range of his bombers in P-bang, I believe and I'll have Singapore in my pocket soon anyways. I'm going to have to recon throughout the rest of the DEI to see if he has any bombers in range of Tarakan waiting for me to take it before I do so. Once Singapore is taken my fighters can move there. Or I could just move to Kuantan right now.

PI
Hit Manila AF again, he probably has half a dozen fighters left if that. I'm perfectly happy to let him replace his fighters at Manila and then have them wiped out again. Sucks up his supply and AC replacement pool. May start moving Zeros and bombers based here to Malaya to hit P-bang.

PAC
Quiet for now. I've decided not to split KB and move them to Kwajalein once all ships have 2 SYS or below. A Naval construction unit is arriving at Canton shortly to build Canton up to level 4 AF so I can base Nells there. Actually, come to think of it, scratch that. Not in our house rules and I think I remember him basing 4Es out of a level 3 AF anywho. Nells based at Kwaj (3 squadrons) will be there next turn. Wish I had more Zeros to spare for Canton. I'm very lucky he withdrew those CVs after sinking my four cruisers instead of hitting Canton. Hopefully I can use Canton to draw out his CVs.

Thanks very much jwilkerson for answering my questions.

quote:

What are the advantages of splitting KB into multiple CV TFs in the same hex?

In the game ( ITG as opposed to IRL ) the advantages are you are less vulnerable to a single strike that some how gets through. And you suffer no penalties for CAP and you suffer no penalties for strike coordination. Another way of saying this is that to hit all the carriers the enemy must fly through CAP more times. And in the game, Japanese CAP is significantly more effective than Japanese flak.

Also running a BB/CA/CL/DD group separately but also in the same hex offers an opportunity for diversion, maybe the strike will hit the BBs instead and they are better at absorbing hits than the CVs.

In the mid to late war .. I usually put about 3 carriers in a TF with about 100-150 planes each ... depending on how many carriers I have this results in 4-5 TFs ... if possible I try to leave the really slow ones out and put those with the AO group though they have planes also ( like the CVEs ).

Note that IRL CAP coordination and strike coordination difficulties would tend to make one operate in one larger TF .. whereas the vulnerability issue would indicate operating in more dispersed formations.

This is actually an interesting question ( at least in real life ). After Midway, Admiral King ORDERED the US Fleet to operate in single CV task forces each commanded by an admiral. Now in game terms they were still in the same hex. But King was obviously "impressed" by the vulnerability of the Japanese carriers which operated in one formation at Midway. And he noted that perhaps his own carriers were saved from a worse pounding by the fact that TF 16 and TF 17 had drifted far enough apart that they were out of site from one an other and none of the Japanese strikes hit TF 16 ( in fact the 2 CVs of TF 16 were even out of site of each other on occcasion during the operations ).

But before and after Midway US admirals argued for and against operating the carriers together. King himself in early 1940 was the first Admiral in either the USN or IJN to oeprate 4 carriers together in one formation. But his subsequent attempts to reorganize the carriers under himself in the scouting force were not approved by his superiors. Also interestingly a news reel was made when these carriers steamed together and Genda saw it later in the year and approached HIS superiors with the idea for forming a separate carrier force, and HIS suggestion was approved !! Also note however, that before Midway Admiral Yamaguchi advocated for forming 3 Carrier Task Forces built around three carrier divisions and attaching the battleline to the carriers. The Battle of Midway and his death delayed this deployment, but it was adopted and used for the full fleet at the Battle of the Philippine Sea, where the Japanese fought in three groups of 3 carriers each.

The dynamic early in the war was that combining the carriers increased their offensive power and defensive power .. but the inccrease in defensive power was not sufficient to defeat the opposing offensive power. In other words offensive power was greater than defensive power. Hence in real life, operating separately was probably wise in the early war period ( dispersal for defense ! ).

However, in 1943 the US Carrier Admirals met in PH and decided to operate the carriers in TFs of 3-4 each. It was felt that advances in CAP coordination and increases in Flak capability were such that the dynamic was now changed and that combing the carriers would increase their defensive power beyond the power of the offense to defeat. They were correct, and at the Battle of the Philippine Sea the defensive CAP and Flak of the American fleet almost completely protected them from the japanese strike force which consisted of hundreds of aircraft and which surely would've destroyed the US carriers in the first year of the war. No ships in the US carrier force were put out of action by the Japanese strike. On the other hand, the Japanese had been unable to improve their defensive ability and the ccounterstrike by the USN sank or disabled a number of ships in the Japanese carrier fleet. And other times and places the US carriers defeated many large strikes against them based on the increased power of their CAP and Flak. Dispersal for defense is correct when offensive power exceeds defensive power. Concetration for increased offsensive ( and defensive ) power is correct when the defense can overcome the power of the offense ( thanks to Capt Huges for clearly stating this principle for us !!! ).

So whether to combine or separate was an important question IRL and it is for the Americans in the game. I also do it as the Japanese and I think many others to also, but perhaps all do not. But many also split KB to operate in more geographical areas. Just be sure if you are doing this you are not opening yourself up to defeat in detail. Note that had Admiral Yamato brought all of KB to the Coral Sea and or all of KB to Midway .. the results would likely have been different in both battles. The only way you can be defeated in detail is if you allow it. But that being said, an agressive US player may counter attack in areas where KB is known to be NOT. In these cases, the typical defense is the Betty/Zero combination. But leaving large areas of the map undefended and concetrating everything in one area ( like SRA ) will permit offensives on the part of the Allies if played by an aggressive player. So knowing your opponent is also a key in the decision process !

His CVs take a few hits and a cruiser sustains heavy damage. I guess he didn't think I had much on Canton to hit him with, as he didn't have much of a CAP up. I've transferred what air was able to leave Canton off to the Marshalls and Truk. KB is probably too far away to catch him but maybe he'll stick around and pound Canton for a few turns. I sighted a few APDs so maybe he even plans to try and take it back?

Malaya
Singapore will be mine within a week it looks like.

PI
Attacks on Manila have started a bit prematurely.

DEI
Invasions enroute to Java and Tarakan. Assembling forces for Palembang. His bombers have been attempting to hit the BB and baby KB group I had in the Java Sea with no success, they lost a fair deal of aircraft trying to hit baby KB too.

PAC
I think he's sent his two damaged CVs to the West Coast, my sub line saw a large force of warships moving east. I've detached two CVs from KB to support DEI ops. Canton was reinforced with more engineers and a CD unit. He'll have to mount a major effor to take it back. KB stumbled upon a transport TF heading east near Baker island.

Malaya
Moving air and support to Singapore.

DEI
Forces heading to Kendari. Will use LBA/naval forces from Kendari in conjunction with baby KB in IO to pick off forces retreating from DEI when Sumatra and Java are invaded. My air has heavily been attrit'ing his air based at P-Bang and Batavia, though he did manage to put two torps into a BB. His fighter force in the DEI has been eaten alive by my Zeros.

PAC
KB moving NW of Palmyra. Will launch airstrike at naval force there (looks to be transporting something) and hitting the airbase there. Nells from Canton Island will support.

Last turn played was 1/26.

I have been able to move all the Nells from Saigon to Singapore, along with some Sallys and Lillys there and at Kuching the pounding of Palembang begins. With support from baby KB reinforced by two CVs Kendari will be taken and then forces will move into Java. After Java has been secured I plan to launch a massive amphibious assault on Palembang (2 divisions + lotso support).

In the Pacific KB is going to hit a force that appears to be reinforcing Palmyra. I have engaged in a successful dogfight last turn over Palmyra, but for the second time in a row my strike aircraft managed not to find the main body of enemy shipping there. I'm pulling my long range I boats back from the lines they were holding between Pearl and the West Coast, I think they will be more useful in the Southwest Pacific and between Pearl and the South/Central Pacific.

I have not advanced into Burma and am simply holding the line there.
