After playing this game for some years, I finally "experimented" with my Paramarine -- Marine paratroop -- units. I was able to drop them on two remote Japanese islands and they easilly took their objectives as these targets were not occupied by the enemy!

When using this manueuver, you must first select the Paramarine unit, then the destination or else you get the familiar "No friendly airfield" message.

After landing, I had no trouble resupplying these troops by air, but must there be a friendly airfield there to do so? Do the Japanese have any paratroops?

For the record, Rod Serling (Twilight Zone) was a Paramarine who nearly starved to death after his unit was air-dropped somewhere in the Pacific. Logistics was always a problem in this theater, and the game accurately reflects this.

I'm going to do something unusual and reply to my own post!

Serling was not a Paramine but a demolition specialist with the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment from 1943-46. He saw action in the Phillipines -- where he recieved the Purple Heart and Bronze Star -- and had flashbacks and nightmares for the rest of his life, as reflected in at least two "Twilight Zone" episodes about war in the Pacific: "The Purple Testament" and "A Quality of Mercy."

Next time Ill research my info before I post it because I'm getting too old to remember everything exactly.

Hi Joe,
thanks for the tip on paramarines. I never tried that and I had no idea you could do that (is it in the manual? I have not yet checked to be honest...).
Could you please explain in more detail how you use them? Do you need to have a Dakota squadron in the starting base? Are they limited to the Dakota range? Can they attack if the target is occupied by the enemy?

In the Op Cartwheel (long) scenario, I moved the 1st Marine Para Bn by sea from Brisbane to PM where I had a fleet of available C-47s. I used an F-5A recon to confirm Jap held Nadzab was unoccupied -- as the para force is too small to just drop into the laps of the enemy, assuming I can do this in the first place -- selected a C-47, then the unit, then the destination in that order.

Later I used the same procedure to drop them on (unoccupied) Hoskins, took the airfield and began transporting "leg" troops that are now contesting Gasmata (160 points!) without having to use sea transport that would be well-within range of the deadly Jap G4M torpedo bombers.

In each instance, I used C-47 transports (within their flying range) to drop the paras onto unoccupied enemy-held objectives with airfields.

I never saw this in the PDF manual and will (carefully) experiment with these troops in the future as I don't want a Pacific "Market Garden" on my hands.

I was playing the "Turning Tide" scenario and finally realized that the 1st Marines at Lungaville --the assembly area for the invasion of Guadalcanal (spelling?) and Tulagi -- had a unit of paramarines.
After my invasion fleet set sail, I used 4 C-47s to drop the paras onto Guadalcanal as it was only held by a few hundred Jap engineers. The paras immediately initiated a shock attack, but without noticable results.
When the invasion fleet arrived, the second wave of paras did another attack and -- with the aid of the other 1st Marine units -- quickly took the island.
Therefore you can (carefully) attack an enemy occupied objective -- without a working airfield -- with paras by C-47.
I never saw this in the manual, but I have never read the pdf from start to finish.

Yes in my experiments paratroopers always automatically assault (shock attack) as soon as they land. No need to give them the order to assault as with the other troops: this means that there is no delay in the assault. This is interesting if you need to reinforce an ongoing assault (or maybe defense), although they are usually too few to make a difference.
However I noticed that using the game editor you can modify existing scenarios or create completely fictional ones with as many paratroopers as you want: the title would of course be "An Island Too Far"...

nice use of paratroopers guys. ive used them quite a few times. i used the 1st Paras to land at tassafraonga and the eastern base at Guadalcanal, its on the tip of my tounge but i cant remember...famous name....AHA! Taivu Point!

result was both points were taken, and wen the 1st Marines landed a few days later they kicked the japs right off the island

ive used it in WITP too but now the jap troops dont surrender, they fight to the death as theyre supposed to.

ive also used em tio take nadzab as well as salamaua

i love paratroops

wen u drop em in they go out to kik sum butt. and even if u drop only a battalion sized unit or so the attack usually dislodges a base thats 1lvl 1 or even 2 so all u gotta do is fly in sum engineers and base support and POOF, instant airbase

sum will call u "gamey" for doing it tho no doubt lol



iwant an airborne Division tho

id need a couple HUNDRED C47s tho
