That's much more pleasing to my eye, Andrew. You might try a little whiter white for the fonts, and even a little bluer blue for the water (though I'd still keep the saturation low--again, less eye strain).

Will you (can you) add the colored icons as well? I find those to be very useful.

Nice work on all the maps you've done andrew!

I personally like the sharper shallow/deep water markings. it makes it look like a continental shelf dropping off and you can theoriticaly see through the water to that point.

I love the new reef color!

Very cool, big improvement.

No hexes, got F6 for that.
No lines for zones, too much clutter.
Need non-extended map version.

Looking forward to your next update.

I actually agree with you J ... it would be interesting to see one that looked like a military map instead of a pretty one ... What would make it nifty is if the hex version was the military one and the non-hex version was the pretty one ... then you could toggle between the two depending on your needs.

Wow! Back from the dead! Welcome back Frag!

I have a comment:

your a hell of an artist. I can barely draw stick figures accurately.

I really love it. As usual
Especially the colors.

The fonts could be improved

Thanks

Looks good. Hopefully there will be hex-less version, and version without myriad of those lines intersecting the map all over....

O.

My map has always come in two standard versions - with hexes and without hexes. My more recent "non hex" maps have also not had any of the weather or control zone lines. I will be continuing this practice with this map version (as well as continuing to have different versions available with or without various features).

BTW one thing Andrew. Personally I don't use hex-ed map so I don't care, but I think in hexed version you should have placenames (fonts) *above* hex grid to make it easier to read, not below.

O.

Well spotted. Normally I do have the fonts above the hex lines, but when making this test map the opposite occurred (I was only interested in testing the look, not worried about which layer was where). When I create the final version the fonts will be in their proper place above the hex lines.

So can we ( as some have suggested ) have both .. a "cool to look at" version and an "easy to use/read" version !? !?

I should be able to make one version of the map in the "Old" style and have it available as well.

Andrew, now I am lost. What [extended] map did I download a few weeks ago? I mean the one which has Sub Chaser's fonts.

You have Subchaser's version of my version 4 map. This map is version 5, which is not released yet, but will be soon.

Hmmm, another fan of bluer water. Unfortunately doing the blending between deep and shallow water makes the use of alternative ocean colours more difficult than with the old map version, so I don't think I can make other versions with different ocean colours (at least not in the near future).

As for the base fonts, I actually made them 1/3 transparent to reduce their brightness and contrast as initially I found the white text too intrusive.

Do you mean resource icons? That is a tough one, as, with the exception of the stock scenarios, the type and location of these is a "moving target"; especially for CHS. When CHS settles down I might add some resource icons then...

Although you can't tell, this test version is the non-extended one . As usual both versions will be available when the map is released.

I have done too much work to revise the base fonts, but I might have a go at using a different font for the ocean/sea names. I am going to try a serif font for them.

When....when!!! Glad to hear the extended version is being done as well. Regarding that I agree with your view that since the rat runs are an abstraction they should be left more obvious than subtle but perhaps a colour change like a BlueGray tone.

You da man! Go Bombers!

hmm instead of changing the water maybe what would help is to make the map look a little brighter? if you notice the matrix map and the subchaser map they just seem brighter colorwise. is this possible???

btw andrew you are the man!

Not too bright or garish. You have to look at that screen for long stretches, you know.

Just to point out the obvious: I'm simply being ultra-picky, since you've proven that you can improve what's already perfect. I love your maps.
I'd love them even without fonts!

I forgot one thing!

In v 3.0 units moving from Karachi to DH get stuck two hexes before Calcutta and they start moving at 5 per turn.
If I then reset the movement and direct them hex by hex they move fine.

I have two PBEM with your map and it happens everytime in both.
However I'm not 100% sure it's map related.

Are you sure about Subchaser's map being brighter? I stole my ocean colours from his version of my map (54:75:105 RGB) because I liked them so much.

Any headway on this AB?

The new fonts and smoothed out sea boundaries look great.

Yes I have made progress, albeit slowly. Hopefully it won't be too much longer before the map is ready to go.
