Those 75mm IG or FGs that your Japanese Inf Companies get, they have no indirect fire capabilites (that I have seen). They (and tha AT guns you get) have no transport -- you have to buy them separately (gun teams, i.e. mule/horse unless you buy trucks or prime movers). They only move at speed of 1 or 2.

I have used the AT guns well on the deploy screen to set up kill zones near my VHs just in case, but those 75mm FGs usually never get used.

What am I doing wrong? Rolling them into position takes all game and they either never get used or get greased along the way. Some battles simply do not allow you to get transport for them...I suppose in a defensive battle they might come in handy for direct fire, but they won't last long with all the arty the USMC and Ivan can pour down on me.

I mistated something. The Inf Guns do have indirect fire, but ONLY if you buy a Forward Observer, but you cannot call for it on the indirect fire plotting page, you can use the individual units "B" key, but again, only if you have a FO.

Japanese Inf companies don't have FOs built into them, so the guns are pretty useless in jungle settings.

Is this intended? With C&C on, how do you use your FO to call arty if you don't have a plotting page...seems more like C&C off when every unit knows what you know.

So, how am I supposed to use these like this? Any ideas?

I think field guns were a technology that was fast becoming obsolete on the WW2 battlefield thanks to the emergence of tanks, artillery and even airpower so don't expect to much from them for a start. They are EXTREMELY limited in an offensive role especially so in heavily forrested maps and very bad weather. They can be useful on open fields where you can set them up behind your troops and offer covering fire on hot spots. They will also serve you better on higher ground where the can fire over bad terrain and use their range and power to good effect. Moving them is a tough one. If you can get transports get something fast or they won't reach the fighting. You may have to risk driving them ahead of your troops so you can set up in good positions before the foots loggers arrive. This is a dangerous strategy but can pay off if you reach the fighting zone before your enemy. It will result in their destruction if the enemy is waiting for you so set up carefully. It may be safer to drive one hex behind your planned position, unload and then walk up one spot if you think the enemy is around otherwise you will lose truck and gun if surprised. Don't drop them too close to the enemy. Heavily armed marines will rake your crew from short distance and use other heavy weapons if they can close in, so its a very good idea to have some covering MGs close by (troops in front of course). Avoid tanks and use stealth as best you can, a spotted gun is most likely a dead one so don't fire all the time. Look for rough defensive terrain too protect your weak guns from incoming fire. Without transport these guns are not much good.

Best of luck, you will need it

Thanks, soldier...I ran some more tests, and my prior statement about a FO worked on one map, but after 5 other tests, I can't get the "B" key to work with the Guns, even when they are on top of a hill and are supposed to be able to see across the map...

I don't understand what is going on...why it works sometimes and not others.

Your point is well taken, soldier, I usually just set them up in a defensive kill zone.

are sure they have indirect fire capabilities ? if so they should appear in the artillery page and company commanders or AO units should be able to call them, not just FO's.
I didn't think dedicated howitzer artillery came with the infantry company (at least in the depot mod). Infantry guns cant shoot indirect but howitzers and offboard guns can. The japanese have a lot of 75mm's in both catagories

If you call indirest by hitting the z key then that will work in indirect. But they do not work like your howitzers. The plotting box only appears for artty that can have targets plotted for them. Not for Ig or at. or FG they must be used for direct fire. You have to buy some kind of transport for them. You dont need it for every gun. let the transport shuttle the guns to forward areas then go back and get the other guns and move them up. you can use 2 trucks for 6 guns very easily. I usually bring them right up into the front lines with my troops then when they move two hex I move the guns one this keeps them close to the troops and can do there stuff this way. When they get over 5 hex back from the front i start to move them back up by the ferry system to get them close again. As the troops can usually move a lot faster then the guns they soon outdistance the slower guns ergo the trucks come into use but you dont need transport for each and every gun. If buy points are aproblem cut out some of the higher priced items to get them. Once your in combat with the enemy you should slow your troops down to one hex movement then the slower movement of the guns isnt that big of a problem. Always try to keep them elavated as much as possible so they can see along way. But in jungle warfare this can sometimes be your bigest problem due to the very low visability in these types of battles. Place them then where the paths run in the jungle be surpprised how many of the enemy like to use these little walkways thru the jungle. Most of my battles tho in the jungle has only had 3 vis so then your direct artty almost becomes useless anyways. then set them up as ambush sights say on your flanks.

You also mentioned that some battles didn't allow you to choose transport. With "Rarity" on, some units are not always available. To fix this, switch the "Rarity" to off.

Running a few more tests...but...

I can see why playing as the Japanese is really hard at times....I run out of ammo more than I have have before...going to have to buy more ammo dumps and trucks than I am used to.
