Morning all (UK anyway),

Where can I find out which commands are restricted and what exactly are the effects of this.

I understand that one of the effects is that we cannot load up troops in a restricted command.

Many thanks.

Look at section 7.1.1 in the manual for restricted commands.

The only effect of a restricted command is that you have to pay Political Points to transfer a land or air unit to a non-restricted command if you want to load the unit on a ship to transport it elsewhere.

I am still confused.

Perhaps if I explain it in more detail.

1926 Scenario. As a test I have created a Transport TF of 12 AK's and 2 AP's at San Diego. I am trying to load up the 2 Marine Regiments that are there and transport them to Los Angeles. All units and bases are Ninth Core.

Yet the TF Load Troops Screendoes not show the ground units. It does show a single Aircraft Group.

Any ideas?

The Marine Regiments are both subordinated to Ninth Corps Area, which is a restricted command. This means that unless the player pays the Political Points to subordinate them to a non-restricted command, such as Ninth Corps Hawaii, they CANNOT be loaded onto ships. That's the reason they're not showing up when you try to load them.

Fair reply and I thank you.

Does a command ever become 'unrestricted' ?

Still seems strange, I have 2 Marine Units I want to move by ship to the North, Home base, destination base and units belong to Ninth Corp Area and yet I cannot get them on the transports.

No, restricted commands never become unrestricted.

The situation I was using of moving the Marines north is just a test situation of the game engine.

I was trying to work out the effects of these 'Restricted Commands'

Of course what I really want to do is load up the Marine regiments and send 'em to Pearl.

I appreciate that to send 'em to another command I have to assign them to that command but the way it is done seems strange. I cannot even load them up to send them to a base of the same command, which would indicate some sort of failure of either the explanation or the game.

Most wargames (board and computer) allow for the shock effect of war on both the individual and the command structures. TOAW scenarios and a few HPS games simulate this by not allowing units to receive orders until conditions are met. This seems to be one of those things and it does feel right. The idea that commands have to gear up to a war footing is one I would second.

I have only played a few test turns and it appears that I get 50 political points a turn. This if it stays at the same rate, will mean that 3 years into the war I will still be waiting to load transports up with divisions until I change thier command.

Before I invest a lot of time with this I was just wondering if it seems right to other players.

And the commands NEVER become unristricted. I would sack the lot of them and tell them to get the **** together

The units you start out with aren't meant to be the ones you throw into offensive combat. If you look at the list of ground unit reinforcements, you'll see that the vast majority of US Army and Marine units that enter later on are part of non-restricted commands like Ninth Corps Hawaii and Southwest Pacific.

BTW, a full-sized infantry division will take from 1-2 months of PP "income" to release from a restricted command.

Thanks for the replies.

Before I mouth off anymore I am going to get into the game and see how it pans out.

Now onto Supply and Auto Convoys.
