AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/15/42

I-2 is really my hero! I know that sending subs in the shallow waters aren't great idea in general, but when opponent keeps only transports in port area you can count on Turkey shot.

Sub attack near Derby at 24,85

Japanese Ships
SS I-2

Allied Ships
AK Empire Clive, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Almost had another disaster with unloading - my transports start to unload troops on the beach just north of Perth despite order DO NOT UNLOAD - be careful guys that order doesn't work always (I can recall that happened to me earlier in the game - near Amboina). Fortunatly i was able to load again all units except naval garnison (this unit will march towards railroad).

Fragment of my brigade was sent further into Australian desert and found another enemy unit. Hm...

Imperial Guard and 5th div backed with 2 tk and eng rtgs will attack Perth tomorrow (these units have disruption below 20) - lets hope for another successful attack.

22 Nells and 50 Sally's escorted with 64 Zeros raided Derby AF. Here are the total losses for today:

As you can see, i've got 2-1 in air losses. 14 Zeros lost in A2A combat, but those poor souls were just trained pilots (F1/Yamada Daitai had 27 pilots with 66 exp and lost 12 Zeros, so i lost only two crack pilots). Not a bad, lets keep Andy in faith that i'm loosing supremacy and quality.

Delivering supply to Kai island becomes dangerous business. Tree LB-30 and 7 T-IV (hey, are there more that obsolute but dangerous ac?) hit my transport with 2 bombs.

CHINA

Day Air attack on Chungking with 75 army bombers make sure that AF will stay closed (92 damage). Four more Chinese bombers are destroyed on the ground.

Andy's second name certainly isn't Patience - he conducted assault on Hengchow with 75 K units, but my two brigades (Ind and Mix - 470 A, hidden behind level 9 fort) repulsed the enemy and forts holds at level 9. And what is important too, Andy spent a lots of supply for shock attack. I don't know how much my bombers (which bombed enemy units at Hengchow) helped, but i think a lot. Now I'm quite confindent that i will keep Hengchow. After all those misfortunate results at notorious crossroads i think i deserve it...

Ground combat at Hengchow

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 71235 troops, 460 guns, 72 vehicles

Defending force 27573 troops, 383 guns, 0 vehicles

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 9)

Japanese ground losses:
324 casualties reported
Guns lost 10

Allied ground losses:
2198 casualties reported
Guns lost 53
Vehicles lost 8

PACIFIC

Andy sending transports to Apamana and he will develop this base that's for sure. Baby KB is on route to Truk, same as Yamashiro and CV Junyo. I've got two experience Daitais as reinforcements so i'm not in totaly hopeless situation here.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/16/42

Not a much to report, but i've spent one hour on my turn. Lots of things regarding logistic should be done: changing PPs for LCUs at crossroad in China, loading BFs from Tokyo and sending them to SRA, transfering green units to training camp (Palembang).

A6M3 production is 72 ac per month and i'm increasing production. What to do this ac? It seems that A6M3 is best suited for AC groups - should i upgrade CV Daitais?

Mix bde, eng unit and 18th division unloading at Perth....

Coastal Guns at Perth, 7,100, firing at TF 116
TF 116 troops unloading over beach at Perth, 7,100

733 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Japanese Ships
PG Kantori Maru, Shell hits 1
PG Aso Maru, Shell hits 6
AP Daitei Maru, Shell hits 4
PG Kaikei Maru

Japanese ground losses:
1665 casualties reported
Guns lost 10

Good, fort level coming down again.

Ground combat at Perth

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 59779 troops, 524 guns, 274 vehicles

Defending force 34471 troops, 270 guns, 100 vehicles

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 5

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 5)

Japanese ground losses:
1343 casualties reported
Guns lost 29
Vehicles lost 13

Allied ground losses:
481 casualties reported
Guns lost 15
Vehicles lost 4

Remains of my 65th bde fragment found Aus Calvary Bde.

PACIFIC

LBA from Maloelap attacked transports. Ok, Andy will probably move figters to base.

Day Air attack on TF, near Apamama at 86,92

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 26
G3M Nell x 19

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M Nell: 1 destroyed, 10 damaged

Allied Ships
AK Empire Rainbow, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage (SINKS)
AK Arcata, Torpedo hits 1
TK K.R. Kingsbury, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD Cummings
AK Steel Age

Lunga is almost lvl 3 AF, i have 2 forts there and 370 AP. Buin is now my main ac base - i moved Air Army HQ there but almost all ac are now in Marshalls.

In few days 2 new Daitais (exp 75) will arrive in Truk.

CHINA

Bad weather - my bombers will be probably stood down. I need them to disrupt enemy at Hengchow.

Even if it wasn't IRL (of which I am uncertain), in the game it is. Not only capable but more suited to CV ops. It has a shorter range and slightly better performance. In a non-PDU environment is the no1 choice for KB.

HMMM... it used to be non CV capable, perhaps they changed it in a recent patch?

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/17/42

Troops almost finishing unloading at Perth. I have two div and mix rtg ready for attack on Perth (disruption below 20) but decided to wait till my tk rtgs recuperate.

Light interceptor SC TF (CL Jintsu and Isuzu + several DDs) finished AK Empire Beaver at Derby(sunk).

CHINA

Yes, Sneer, China doesn't look brilliant at the moment but i hope that i would be able to stop him in north China, hidden behind my forts. Chinese offensive in the central China (Hengchow) is, i believe just diverting attack - even if Hengchow falls i can threaten his flank from Changsha. Don't believe that he have enough forces to continue his offensive furthermore on south.

Anyway, my offensive in south China failed (i give up after miserable results at the crossroads where my bombers didn't want attack) and some of troops are diverting to Kwelin and Wuchow. Even if he push me from the crossroads he will be faced with forts 9 at these bases.

Don't know if this Chinese offensive is just desperate try (i've destroyed his airforce there and Chungking AF is closed) to balance things there or big long time planed offensive but yes i have weak spot(s) in the north. Two tank reg are relased from Kwantung and will be strategic reserve.

Day Air attack on Yenen , at 50,26 - from Ichang

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 11
Ki-21 Sally x 49
Ki-49 Helen x 5

Allied aircraft
I-16c x 11

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 3 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
I-16c: 2 destroyed, 2 damaged

Resources hits 6

-----------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Changsha

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 2632 troops, 87 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 35127 troops, 156 guns, 0 vehicles

Allied ground losses:
123 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

Will try shock attack here - i have two div and couple of bdes in Changsha - prepared 100% for the base.

PACIFIC

Allies captured Makin.

AWS EFFORT

Naval ASW is useless - i can't found enemy sub TFs even in the shallow waters. I'm afraid that when 1.8 comes it would be completly useless to divert men and material to ASW. Well it is too harsh IMO.

Sturgeon is reported HIT
Ki-21 Sally attacking Swordfish at 22,46

Ki-21 Sally attacking Swordfish at 22,46

String & Honda: I've just checked - as you may see A6M3 is carrier capable plane, which means i should be able to upgrade my CV Daitais to them. So it's logical that should do it, what do you think?

By all means. It's not much of an improvement but i'd always take M3 over M2 in KB. You won't need the range and extra speed and mvr might prove helpfull. I saw a good use for M2s in PzBs game - escort fodder in 43+ Just enough to push your bombers through while getting obliterated and you don't even have to blink 'cause all the pilots are in their 30s. You don't need more then 2 of such daitais. Although Oscar is crappier so...

Wait for A6M3a. You dont need anything better than A6M2 in 1942.
A6M3a came in late 1942 and replace your A6M2.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/18/42 & 04/19/42

AUSTRALIA

Another attack on Perth - with mix bde, two division, two eng and tk rtg. Forts coming down again and i wonder is it a time for full scale attack with all 5 divs, 2 tk rtgs and 4 eng units (when disruption lowers to acceptable level)?

Ground combat at Perth

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 67578 troops, 598 guns, 158 vehicles

Defending force 33752 troops, 267 guns, 89 vehicles

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 4

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 4)

Japanese ground losses:
1187 casualties reported
Guns lost 55
Vehicles lost 8

Allied ground losses:
569 casualties reported
Guns lost 16
Vehicles lost 3

CHINA

As you may see from the picture, I'm in control of so-called Chinese "offensive". Last two days I also raided resources in Kunming and bombed Changsha AF - several SB-2c destroyed on the closed runaway. I even sent semi-trained Nells on resource raid on Chengtu (16 resource damaged). Lots of figthers (83) and heavies (110) reported at Ledo - guess he want establish balance in the China skies. Meanwhile heavies transporting supply to Chengtu, I guess.

The only way to achive balance is sending fighters to Chengtu but this is level one AF. So if he tries that it would be pretty costly for him.

PACIFIC

My NLF unit holds at Baker islands against his Marine raiders - i've ordered shock attack for tomorrow. Andy captured Mili with cadre of USA division.

Ground combat at Mili

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 278 troops, 24 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles

Allied assault odds: 6 to 1 (fort level 0)

Allied forces CAPTURE Mili base !!!

Still there is nothing I can do it now, but Baby KB and Junyo are few days from the Truk. Yamashiro and escort (CL and few DDs) will arrive tomorrow at Truk.

South East detachment is at Kwajalein, and big naval garnison and SNLF unit are sent to Maloelap. I could re-route 20th division to Marshalls too, but this will weaken my defence at Solomon area. And if Andy's advance towards Marshalls is only trick I could face with serious situation in Solomons area.

But think i will send 20th division to Kwajalein - only big unit there is SED, and 35bde and 56 bde will have to endure in the Solomons (they recuperating at Truk).

What do you think?

AUSTRALIA

Another great raid against Derby. Combined with losses in the Changsha enemy lost 19 ac while i lost 4 (2 Zero and 2 Sally).

I did not noticed that i'm runing out of the fuel in southern SRA - i've sent emergency conwoys from SIngapore, Brunei with fuel until main conwoys arrive from Home islands with fuel.

That's the reason why i didn not loaded 4 divisions on transports for Derby invasion yet. Regarding the Perth, Imperial HQ ordered all out attack when all units recuperate (it interesting that some of my units at Perth can't go lower than 20 disruption although i have 2 Army HQ and more than enough supply.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/21/42

CHINA

Semi-trained Oscars again gains some experience in the Yenen skies.

Day Air attack on Yenen , at 50,26

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 34

Allied aircraft
I-16c x 7

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses

Ki-49 Helen x 27

No Japanese losses

Resources hits 21

I thought that everything will be ok in Hengchow area. My units crossed the river and conducted shock attack on demoralised and decimated Chinese units which were defeated twice...

Ground combat at 45,35

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 78113 troops, 878 guns, 10 vehicles

Defending force 17380 troops, 56 guns, 0 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 7 to 1

1916 casualties reported
Guns lost 38
Vehicles lost 2

Allied ground losses:
539 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Attack went smoothly as you can see, but four enemy units appeared in railroad hex between Hengchow and Changsha which was my ZOC!. They arrived from Hengchow where i have units assigned to Hengchow defence and those enemy wasn't supposed to move here! (i've posted screenie in War room).

However, 135.000 Chinese are still in the Hengchow but i guess that they will arrive in hex NE of Hengchow (now is Chinese ZOC hex) tomorrow. Bulk of my Changsha defence force is north of the river and i hope that 350 AP left in Changsha will be enough to stop Chinese if they try desperate assault on Changsha. But i doubt it - he will probably try to evacuate his troops across the river.

SRA & AUSTRALIA

Some of my units are still at 30 disruption so have to wait another day. Three enemy units are located on the Darwin-Derby railroad.

Phase two of the Klokan-go (btw, klokan means kangaroo and yes i know i'm not creative) started. Following units are embarked on ships at Soerbaya:

- 2th Div
- 16th Div
- 48th Div
- 38th Div
- one tk rtg, two SNLFs and two base forces, one eng rtg.

14th Army will provide support to these troops, but Gen. Hisaichi Terauchi will lead amphibious invasion on Derby by himself! Yes, it is Cic of the Southern Army. As Esteban said, "There is no rear echelons in my army"....

Air support will be provided from the Koepang (65 Zeros, 80 army bombers and 40 naval bombers), while two fast BBs (other two are on r&r at Singapore) and 4 slow BBs (they are few days from the Koepang - returning from Perth trip) will provide naval support.

After the capture of Perth, i will load as many divisiona as i can and send them to Derby. I was considering to send them via railroad, but Andy easily can block me on the railroad (especially on the rairoad crossroads in the inner Australia).

At the same time, i will left one bde and naval guard units + base forces as divert action and try to fool Andy that i'm sending bulk of Perth invasion group via railroad.

Enemy attacking empty AF at Lautem - enemy started his training program

Day Air attack on Lautem , at 33,78

Allied aircraft
Hudson I x 5
B-25C Mitchell x 29

No Allied losses

Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 11

Dutch sub (K IX) reported sunk in south Australia waters.

I ordered a strike agains Derby resources for tomorrow - and hope i will score some more victory points for strategic bombing.

PACIFIC

Enemy forces captured Baker island and commander of the 4th Fleet expect that this base will be turned into main base for future Allied operations. Lots of traffic reported in Apanama area too and that base could become important too.

I have no enough force for strike on these bases - only limited offensive goes against Mili - SED embarked on transports and will recapture Mili.

20th division rerouted for Kwajelien, while Baby KB will be reinforced with Junyo at Truk tomorrow. I'm not sure what to do with this formidable force (but only against single American CV and/or enemy surface/transport fleet(s)). I have a nice opportunity to use them in Tarawa/Baker area - no enemy AFs are developed yet but Andy could hide his CV(s) somewhere in that area.

Hmmm... I guess that one American CV is in the India area, two were used in East Australia waters but the crew of the one CV are decimated when he transfered them to Derby AF. Don't know if these CV's could arrive in Noumea yet but i have to count on that. So, i can expect, aaaa... two US CVs?

Subs will mine Noumea (or what) atoll, south of Apanama - lets hope it will cause some annoyance to Andy.

Lunga is expanded to level 4 AF and 300 eng will build forts from now. 35th and 56 bde are still in Truk but they are ready to reinforce Rabaul and Lunga. This will leave Truk pretty empty but i don't think that Andy could sneak a mayor invasion TF through my defence line in the Solomons (lvl 4 AF: Rabaul, Buin, Lunga) and Marshalls. But, reinforcements for Truk would be more than welcomed - only 180 AP defending Truk (Naval guard garnison and big SNLF unit)

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/22/42

Not a most exciting turn.

CHINA

Usual strategic target is on the pressure - Chungking AF, while Chengtu resources are attacked too.

Day Air attack on Chungking , at 43,32

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21 Sally x 23
Ki-49 Helen x 27
Ki-15 Babs x 4

Allied aircraft
no flights

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
No Allied losses

Allied ground losses:
6 casualties reported

Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 17

Chengtu resources are now under 200.

Day Air attack on Chengtu , at 41,29

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 21
G3M Nell x 27
Ki-21 Sally x 68
Ki-49 Helen x 9
Ki-46-II Dinah x 6

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 1 damaged

Resources hits 29

I have made check how many resources are damaged:

Kunming (180) damaged, 120 operational
Chungking (233), 67 - 38 oil operational
Chengtu (112) 188
Sian (39) 21
Yenen (29) 151.

That wouldn't bad result, but North China is still in the Commie hands. I'm considering new plan regarding offensive in that particular area, but let's wait for few more turns and see what will hapend here.

AUSTRALIA

Lots of hits on Derby resources but only few actually damaged - 16 points added in my "Victory points for strategic bombing" basket are added.

Day Air attack on Derby , at 24,85

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 6
G3M Nell x 24
Ki-21 Sally x 49
Ki-49 Helen x 21
Ki-46-II Dinah x 4

Allied aircraft
Hurricane II x 1

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21 Sally: 1 destroyed, 10 damaged
Ki-49 Helen: 5 damaged

I ordered attack for tomorrow on Perth - 3 div, 2 tk rtg, 2 eng units and mix bde. My inital plan was assault with all 5 divisions there, but two of them are still at 25 disruption. Andy's units reached my bde north of Perth, but they should'nt be a problem.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/26/42

PACIFIC

Invasion on Tarawa continues - but i have a very diabolic plan here. Not decide yet if i would accept this plan, i would wait for recon of the Apamama first. It's quite risky plan (i would risk my B KB and have to get perfect cordination with ground based Zeros) but benefit should be great - sinking Hornet.

Andy have Hornet at Apamama but didn't upgrade to Avengers yet - so i would have advantage. He also brings app 40 fighters there and the plan is sweep from Maloelap to clear his CAP and after that strike with planes from B KB (carriers would be in position to strike - 4 hex of Apamama - in next there days) in that very same turn.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/27/42

PACIFIC

Enemy troops still unloading at Tarawa but another shock attack is repulsed. However situation here is changing - Apamama is now AF 2 and sending B KB would be more risky than before...

What Andy can do? He could transfer dive bombers to base either from Nanomea (if he have them there) either from Hornet and withdraw his precious toy from danger area. I would do the second and it is questionable that any kind of offensive action would be effective - i'm risking my carriers.

Ah, only problem playing as Japanese is that you cant affort yourself a mistake. Nothing has yet decided, i'm moving B KB towards Gilberts.

Ground combat at Tarawa

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 3330 troops, 6 guns, 6 vehicles

Defending force 4556 troops, 4 guns, 0 vehicles

Tarawa still holds, and have enough supply for another week.

CHINA

I found B17 at Kweiyang and 3 more forts are destroyed on the ground. Ordered for tomorrow strike on Kweiyang and Kumning - Andy would probably act as grasshoper and transfer B17s from Kweiyang. Let see if i can caught him again

Allied ground losses:

Unfortunatly, fort isn't reduced and that will delay me.

Fast BB group will bombard Derby tomorrow. Slow BB TF will follow them.

PACIFIC

Ok, decide to send Baby KB on raid. I know it is risky, but after long discussion at 4th fleet HQ, these arguments were accepted:

- we simply musn't allow Andy's troops to enjoy in Gilberts beatches while they hapily building infrastructure there.
- i have decent support from the Maloelap
- i have only few days more Zero bonus - the longer we wait, the harder would be to inflict damage to enemy.

Day Air attack on Tarawa , at 85,91 - from Apamama

Allied aircraft
SBD Dauntless x 7
P-36A Mohawk x 10
A-24 Dauntless x 10

No Allied losses

CHINA

Attacks on Kunming and Kweiyang were successful - 6 B17s destroyed on the ground (overall losse are 20-8 in my favour). I have no clue what Andy tried here, but i'm not complaining (yet). Two things came up to my mind: either he sacrify them to divert my bombing campaign on secondary AF and buy some time for repair of the Chungking AF (not going to allow him that), either he tried to transfer them to Pacific or Australia and he need to get closer (i don't know is this possible).

In the attached screenie you will see that i decide to go on Yunan - my forces are weak, but the enemy is weaker, i think.

Hmm
Don't you loose too much time there ? You can't really hurt him there
or maybe it is secondary importance target ?
Watch for it as it can be a battle too far
how about Burma and China ?
resource targeted offensive works wonderful - it is worth thinking about

hi Sneer - i really losing to much time there, but this ground combat really kills me. I've got 1-1 last week (with two div i think) and forts were reduced. OK, this happend the day after I attacked with 3 division so his units probably were somewhat disrupted.

Thats why i choosed again this option - but in my previous attack fort did not reduced and this last combat was really dissapointed to me - 3 div, tk rth, 2 eng rtg and nada, nil zero....

It is true that this is secondary target - my main goal is northern Australia to secure south flank of the SRA. After that i planed to attack PM and keep pressure there, but i dont know what will be possible to do in the future because i'm really behind the schedule there in Perth.

Burma - i've closed Burma road long time ago (holding Akyab and Mytkina - empty bases and Mandalay (fortifying there). As you may se in one of previous posts i've sent small expeditionary force (mix rtg, eng and tank rtg from burma to Yenen) in the China backyard.

CHINA - it would be nice to capture Yenen because i expect Andy's offensive in the South China theatre on Kwelin or Wuchow (he have 48 units at notorious crossroad where i've failed to broke his defence). Now those units are experienced and could cause problems in South China. Im fortifyng positions at Kwelin and Wuchow and will defend there.

It seems that i have opportunity to capture Yenen - Andy leaved base force there and couple of units. If i do it than Andy would be in problems at Tatung.

My next offensive will be Homan - Sian line and personally would be satisfied with seizing North China. Don't expect some miracles there because i didn't infict great casaulties to the Chinese army before.

will be difficult to take PM so late if he wants to defend and you are commited to Australia but good luck
How do you estimate your chances to capture and keep North Oz in next 6 months ?
is Timor secured and built up ?
how about Salomons ?
His attack on gilberts shows he finds you overstretched - you must pull him out - it is too early to loose gilberts as it should be very costly for allies to be ready for Central Pac offensive
I guess you accelerated Hiyo and Junyo and soon mini KB will be strenghtened

Knowing how aggressive Andy is it's important to pause him around Tarawa - if not he'll be in Kwajalein within a year!
First half of 42 is the right time to hurt the Allies, so go for it 110%!

Looks like Perth is stubborn, if he got large amounts of supplies there reinforcements will be plentyfull.

Sneer, I don't have any illusions about Akyab and Mandalay - i'm not going to defend them if allied air offensive concentrate on these bases - and i expect that this offensive would start in next few days - after the Zero bonus completely expire. The reason is simple - i haven't got advanced army fighters yet and not going to sacrify crack Oscar pilots for nothing. They will be more useful in Tony and Tojo cockpit.

I don't know if i have to afraid invasion on Burma and Malaya - sunk many transports at the begining of the game and Australia-India sea route is closed. But i can't affort myself to get suprised here and that's the reason i have there 3 divs and many smaller units (if Andy opens the hell gate with his 4E bombers they will have more targets).

I dont know how/if he evacuated troops from Malaya - i guess that he evacuated almost all units via sub transports. Troops from Burma were also evacuated, but they got serious beating with tk rtg and mix rtg.

Thanks, PzB my thought is exatcly what you said and that is why i sending B KB reinforced with Junyo (Hiyo will come in next 3 months)... When i got familiar with Andy's style i made overall strategic plan - capturing the north Australia, PM and then wait and take only preventive strikes knowing he will came to me...

But Perth really messed my strategy and now i have to improvise...which certaintly isn't best thing to do especially for the Japan

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/29/42

AUSTRALIA AND SRA

To be honest, didn't expect that my second bombardment run would went with good results too... But, Andy have lots of support troops at Derby...

BB Nagato

Allied ground losses:

"Desert rats" in the inner Australia got better odds this time

Ground combat at 10,94

Defending force 12018 troops, 136 guns, 0 vehicles

Allied assault odds: 1 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
48 casualties reported
Guns lost 7

Allied ground losses:
318 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Vehicles lost 8

I've waited till Andy get confindent that i wouldn't put LR CAP over Lautem. Today 17 Zeros ambushed his Mitchells and Hudsons but results aren't spectacular - 3 Mitchells and one Hudson are lost.

PACIFIC

Nothing important happend last turn - my carriers withdrew too early - but this time i would be in perfect position to strike his forces at/near Tarawa. Must to be mentioned that my planes did not fly from Maloelap although Mavis groups found lot's of target (see picture). I've disposed Goto and put more skilled R ADM in charge of Air HQ - i need perfect performance of my naval and ground based air groups!

As you may see from the picture i've decided to go 4 hexes from the Tarawa. It wasn't an easy decision but my view is:

- didn't recon Apamama last turn - don't want to face with 50 enemy fighters and 50 dive bombers.
- enemy fleet is moving northeast. If my recon is right he is going to Makin and i will be in more than good position to sink his transports.
- if he going to Tarawa B KB can reach them too with torpedo bombers but i will stay outside his TBs or DBs from Apamama
- fleet east of Tarawa is Hornet TF, i'm sure. If Andy choose to cover transports at Tarawa B KB will engage Hornet.
- and the last but not the least - I think that Andy don't know B KB is in the area. So maybe he left/forgot to change Hornet react on 0. But even if he set there is still chance that his commander is the agressive one and would react one hex towards B KB - and that would be perfect!

Yeah, i'm great theoretician, i know , and can't be sure that things will happens as i described - that's why this game is BEST! lots of planing, lots of thinking, lots of playing cat and mouse, but outcame will suprise you...

Let's pray that my ground based aircrafts would fly tomorrow...

Naval bombardment of Tarawa, at 85,91 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!

7 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Allied Ships
CL Raleigh, Shell hits 2
CL Detroit, Shell hits 1
BB Mississippi
BB New Mexico
BB California
BB Arizona

Japanese ground losses:
152 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 4
Port hits 2
Port supply hits 2

CHINA

Air attack on Kweiyang with 67 bombers and Chungking with 24 Helens (AF damage 100).

I'm puting some pressure on Yenen too. HQ unit can't repulse my bde.

Since my current PBEM game is on hold, I must admit I'm using this thread as "replecmant for my WitP addiction" . Can't wait to see what will happen near Tarawa...

I've found extensive planning and relying on LBA flying on a given turn from a given base being tricky at best.

I've personally always favored the use of the sledgehammer approach. If you overcompensate threefold there's little chance of stuff going wrong

I agree with you String, but as your opponent grows stronger it may no longer be possible to overcompensate threefold..!
Then you got nothing but cunning planning and luck to fall back upon

be careful with burma theater
it will certainly be a target of allied offensive
too many AAR shows that neglecting burma problem brings totally unhistorical allied reconquista
and full head of problems

thanks guys....

Sneer, i'm totally aware that Burma will be a problem in the (near) future.... but i choosed to go with offensive in the other theatres rather than dig in Burma because i still have the edge...

String, you are right, overcomiting is better than undercomiting - but i don't have sufficient force in the Pacific to do what you suggest.

The only thing i could do in this particular area is to overload Maloelap (lvl 4 AF) with planes but i never do such things - i consider it gamey....

So i've done the best I could do there, i think - if everything gone perfect i would became a top, intelligent, clever, cunning.. blah, blah, player... but if god of Fortune screw me here, hey, i can always whin about bad luck and the game engine that's hates me

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/30/42

PACIFIC

i'm most misfortunate player on the world, game engine sucks!

Seriously, sorry guys, i'm going to dissapoint you - nothing happends. Well almost nothing. LBA flew from Maloelap, but B KB didn't attack nothing - search planes didn't find anything at Tarawa although there was enough valuable targets and withdrew towards Kwajelein. Unfortunatly, Andy is now aware - Jake was shot down by the enemy CAP over Gilberts and this means that my TF is visible to him...

Day Air attack on TF, near Apamama at 86,92

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 62
G3M Nell x 3

Allied aircraft
F4F-4 Wildcat x 6
P-36A Mohawk x 7

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M Nell: 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
F4F-4 Wildcat: 3 destroyed
P-36A Mohawk: 19 destroyed

Allied Ships
DD Dale, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet

Another not so balanced attack, but my Zeros done their job. Enemy lost 28 planes in A2A combat today (including Perth), while my A2A losses are 3 (bombers). I have lots of ops losses (8 - 4 of them are Zero) so total outcome for today is 31-14.

Day Air attack on TF, near Tarawa at 85,91

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 6
G3M Nell x 12

Allied aircraft
F2A Buffalo x 11
P-40B Tomahawk x 5
P-40E Warhawk x 5

Japanese aircraft losses
G3M Nell: 9 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40B Tomahawk: 1 destroyed

Allied Ships
CA New Orleans
CA Minneapolis, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Hm... Minneapolis recived one torpedo (severe damage) and doubt that she is that heavily damaged.

RO-66 recived 8 hits from enemy DDs and sinks.

Tarawa falls. Now what to do here? I can not start big offensive on Gilberts which means Andy will dug here. My KB is still around the Perth and even if i send KB to Pacific now it will arrive to Marshalls when Andy would have AF 4 size on Tarawa and Apamama. The only way to delay him there is to cut sea routes to Gilberts. Ok, i will try to build defence on Marshalls but have to be prepared that i could lost them even before 1943.

Andy was quite suprised with number of my Zeros at the Marshalls - i've told him that Japan recive several Zero Daitais in the April.

AUSTRALIA AND SRA

Two Kate groups bombed resources at Darwin and 160 VP scored. Andy told me that Perth is now in the range of big HQ and he expect that i would struggle at Perth.

I will try another attack, but this time with all forces that i have there, and some of ac groups will bomb his ground units.

Ground combat at 10,94

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 3459 troops, 11 guns, 53 vehicles

Defending force 11854 troops, 121 guns, 0 vehicles

Allied assault odds: 3 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
68 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

Allied ground losses:
81 casualties reported
Vehicles lost 6

Bde in the desert can't withdraw....

Day Air attack on Perth , at 7,100

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 36
B5N Kate x 48

Allied aircraft
Brewster 339D x 2

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N Kate: 1 destroyed, 6 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Brewster 339D: 2 destroyed

Resources hits 11

Aircraft Attacking:

All B5N Kate bombing at 12000 feet

Andy trying to disrupt my units at Perth - leaking CAP from KB did not stop all his bombers so i've ordered LR CAP over Perth for tomorrow (Hiryu group).

Day Air attack on 56th Division, at 7,100

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 23

Allied aircraft
Brewster 339D x 3
LB-30 Liberator x 5

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Brewster 339D: 3 destroyed
LB-30 Liberator: 5 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
19 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
5 x LB-30 Liberator bombing at 6000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Imperial Guards Division, at 7,100

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 48

Allied aircraft
LB-30 Liberator x 3

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
LB-30 Liberator: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
10 casualties reported

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x LB-30 Liberator bombing at 6000 feet

Mitchells again visited Lautem - this time i had no CAP over the base. Hm, lots of fighters (150) and bombers (100) at Darwin and i expect that this nasty Scot could bomb Koepang.

That is the last thing i could wish - i need that AF for support of my invasion on Derby. Transports are now at half way from Derby but they will wait till another bombardment run clears the path to Derby beaches.
