Well, i will admit i know next to nothing about Danish. I did read a translated Danish science-fiction (sort of) novel once. At one point, the author starts waxing lyrical about Danish - "How rich is my language!" - followed by an asterisk and a footnote. The footnote read "We disagree - the translators."

I have no idea whether the Danish language is rich or poor, but it is about the only thing i can remember about the book 20+ years later...

Heh... Without denigrating my native tongue, Danish isn't as rich as English. What sets Danish apart is intonation; the same word can have multiple meanings, depending on which syllable you emphasise. That's part of what makes it a beast for foreigners to learn.

OK, i give - what does "Det er ligesom fordelen ved at tale et sprog som under 1/1000 af verdens befolkning kan forstå" mean??

I don't know about rich, but English sure is a mess. Mixture of middle german, latin, celtic, with a little bit of other things thrown in for the heck of it. Then, when you get into all the dialects, like Creole...foget about it.

well, the same stuff happens in English, and probably a bunch of other languages (all of them??) - i.e. - "man, that's BAAADD!!" can mean - that's GREAT, or that's HORRIBLE, depending on intonation, etc. Also witness Richard Nixon's "That would be wrong". Almost everyone who listened to the tape in the National Archives agreed he meant no such thing.

Alright, since you asked so nicely:

"Det er ligesom fordelen ved at tale et sprog som under 1/1000 af verdens befolkning kan forstå"

=

"That's the advantage of speaking a language which is understood by less than 1/1000 of the world's population".

Ta-daa!

Terminus, I am so glad you translated. I thought you were saying that

"Det er ligesom fordelen ved at tale et sprog som under 1/1000 af verdens befolkning kan forstå"

THe dastardly Folderol are spreading tall tales that Nik, the flak fanboy, wears dresses while punting 1/1000 cats.
