Thank Guys for the thoughts here.

Castor--I completely concur with you. You elected to go after India, due to his tactics, and I chose to lunge North and then South. I plan to take Anchorage (perhaps Nome--so there are NO surprises behind me!) and nothing more. Want to destroy his troops.

New Zealand and Australia next. I've noticed several times in China, when I've been butting my head against Changsha, his predilection to bring out troops and then withdraw after just one or two attacks. Might those attacks have been successful with some work? YES!

I will/am using China for my training as well. I have lost some Bettys with attacking Anchorage and intend to replace soon with Helens/Sallys. Want my TT Betty pilots READY to cause chaos! Would LOVE a shot at some BBs!

Haven't had a chance to update today. Will try in a little while!

Thanks to the both of you for the contributions! Did we figure out the upgrade path on Oscar?

Don´t know about the Oscars. If the factories really auto upgrade to Tonies then I´m quite dumb to convert them a few months before to get enough Tonies available.

46,36 55F 50B 85 Cas

Australia
12,94 24B 21 Cas and 2 Tanks
37,90 30F 10B 10 Cas

Ground
Anchorage Landing Continues!
HOLY COW--CD! 1st Round 3544 Shots 2nd Round 732 Shots Numerous Ships Damaged---about 15 heavily. Disabled troops--Rd1 4,732 and Rd 2--732. US Bombardment does 161 cas.

China
My Chinese situation is frustrating. Wolfpack keeps clearing the road out and I cannot attack Changsha due to high disruption....Grrrr....

46,36 7 Chinese Corps attack my Inf Div on the Road! 42-1 Forced to retreat and the road opens again--DAMMIT! 447 Jap for 269 Chinese

54,92 East of Port Moresby Shock Attack! 49-1 2,245 POW enter Japanese Hands.

Navy
Losses from CD and Attack today: CL Oi, 2 ML, 1PC Have about 20 heavily damaged AP/PC trying to make it back to disband at Kodiak.

I lose Oi and 2ML due to B-25 Raids at 121,22. They successfully mined Sitka and then paid for it...

I now have 10 Carriers at Dutch Harbor--KB1 and 3 plus 2 CVE. Let them rest a little then they will go raiding.

Reinforcement Convoy departs DH for Anchorage. It is carrying: 2 Inf Brig, 1 Eng, 2 Art, and 20,000 Supply.

Engineering:
Sitka (US) goes to AF 4
Dutch Harbor Pt 5

June 3, 1942

SS
SS Halibut attacks on the surface an AP (119,29)--hits it 2 times and takes a hit. This is the hex where I am landing troops/supplies to cutoff Wolfpack's retreat from Anchorage.

Air
Anchorage 68Z 6B 11 Cas and 1G

Manila 64F 94B 104DB 233 Cas and 5G

China
Changsha 109B 192 Cas With taking Changsha, I am splitting up the China Air Force some. Shift HQ to Northern Pacific for 3 Daitai of Bombers, 1 Chutai of Bombers, and 1 Daitai of Oscars--Total: 36F and 93B. They will take over most of the burden from my Betty Daitai that are in the Aleutians.

Australia
12,94 13B 34 Cas and 2 Tanks
37,90 21F 26B 80 Cas

Land
Continue Landing at Anchorage (90,000+ troops unloaded)
CD--Rd 1 87 Shots and Rd2 142 Shots--3 more AP hit. Disabled--Rd1 1196 and Rd2 220.
US Bombardment: 173 Cas

Shock Attack: Changsha---TAKE IT! FINALLY!! Fort 0 15,698-1
Do Force 8 Chinese Corps to Retreat. Unfortunately...it is down the road...that I could not keep closed! Inflict--2,910 Cas for NONE.

With taking Changsha, I divide out the worse off units for refit. Spread them out as follows: 2 Inf Div ordered to Hsinyang, 3 Inf Div+ 1Inf Brig to Wuhan, and 1 Inf Brig to Kuikang (need it to garrision). The remainder will rest in Changsha for a week or so and then continue the attack down the railline.

Deliberate Attack: Manila! 1-1 Forts drop from 2-to-1
132,794 832G 573T Losses 2,490 40G 10T
54,382 120G 75T Losses 1,380 18G

Sea
Wolfpack losses yet another TK from my New Zealand Raids

For the Day, lose 2PC and a DD--Fuyo

Bombardment: Anchorage 4BB and 2BB plus 3CA 1096 Cas, 2 planes, 23G, 2V, and AF/Pt. Order them to attack one more time and then head for Dutch Harbor. Will separate the highest SYS DAM ships and send them home.

17 B-25 hit AP with 6B unloading at 119,29. Will lose that ship next round.

Tomorrow I will form-up my CVs for a massive raid on Sitka and Prince Rupert Sound. I will destroy the AFs and interdict anything that might come along.

The reinforcement convoy for Anchorage will be diverted to 119,29. It appears Wolfpack is going to try to get past my 3 SNLF units there. I WILL NOT ALLOW HIM TO RETREAT! Those 2 Inf Brigades and support units will keep him bottled up.

Naval Construction at Home: CVL Ryuho joins the Imperial Fleet. Order CV Zuikaku to head for Tokyo to join her--SYS 6--but OK. Shokaku is still at 20 SYS. She will stay at least two more weeks getting repaired. All planes have been replaced. Those ships, with IJN Yamato, will head for Noumea to cause chaos!

Plus all those guys you retreated take about 20% losses above the loss listed in Combat report. I expect he has nothing left. You will rule China from here on.

15000 to one against 8 corps!!!!!!!! You know these guys have nothing left!!!!!!

The way you've bombed his industry I don't see how he has anything much left. You have closed Burma rd correct?

You should be able to go straight to Chungking after a short period of regrouping and clearing of the rail line. I don't know what you're goals are. If you just want to eliminate China as a threat then you are done. If you want to take every last Chinese city then you still have some work to do.

But no rush in either case. he doesn't have the supply to replace his losses. You can rest and occasionally bomb his cities. (This will keep his morale from rising). Your troops will keep getting stronger while his will not improve.

I have cut the Burma Road.

I think I want to open the Railline and nothing mroe then that. Don't really have any desire to go for more. If I can build-up my Forts and have strong garrisions--he won't be able to take the cities back. At that point, based on political points, I will gradually transfer units to the Pacific Theatre. Thoughts?

I will continue to bomb his resource and industry sites. That should help keep him down. I REALLY want to use the area for keeping my airpower trained up. That will help later in the war on both the ground and air fronts.

Then you pretty much have him. With Changsa in your hands you hold the center and have a solid defensive position to ensure he cannot make any mischief. After you clear the rail you might head up to Sien to divide his army. Make sur those Changsa resourses and HI are not repairing. Its easy to forget and 2 weeks later you're wondering what happened to all the supply in China.

5th Air Division HQ to move to Manila and then Noumea--Given planning orders for Noumea.

Ground
Landing at Anchorage two AP hit by CD and take 122 Cas. US Bombardment causes 68 Japanese Cas.

Deliberate Attack: Manila! 3-1 Lose 1,423 Cas 22G 7Tanks US Loses: 55,966 POW 301G 62T FINALLY! Changsha one day and Manile the next! Nearly 1000 VP--BANZAI! Surprisingly, the AF/Port is not damaged TOO badly.

117,28 East of Anchorage: 1 SNLF vs. Canadian Brigade 0-1 Attack by the Canadians

Troop Redeployment: New Assignments and Prepping Begins...
Philippine Mop-Up (to Burma eventually): 2 Ind Brigades

Perth Invasion Force: 14th Army, 48th Inf Div, 65th Brig, 4th Eng Reg, 1 Hv Art Reg, and 2 Tank Reg--Will let these guys sit for 2-3 weeks before moving.

Wellington Invasion Force: 25th Army, 18th Inf Div, 56th Inf Div, 3 Tk Reg, 5th Eng Reg, 2 Mtr Bat, 5th Air Div HQ. Will send these units to Rest and Refit at Noumea.

CHINA--3rd Inf Brig shifted to 4th Fleet HQ for Pacific duty.

Palmyra--3rd Eng Reg to be sent to Noumea to join Wellington Group.

Sea
Two Bombardments of Anchorage: 6BB and 3CA total--487 Cas, 8G, 1V, and AF.

16 B-25 hit small reinforcement group between Anchorage and Sitka; 1AK hit and 1AP Sunk.

Lose 4 more AP from Anchorage Invasion.

I split the Reinforcement Group appraoching Anchorage. This Canadian Brigade trying to break through my SNLF could pose trouble. I WANT ALL those troops in Anchorage so I must reinforce my blocking unit. Split TF:
Group 1: to Anchorage (as planned) with 15th Eng Reg and 11,000+ Supplies
Group 2: to Landing Site between Anchorage and Sitka with 2 Inf Brig + 2 Art units (19,000+ Troops) and 22,800 Supply

Group Two will move up to this Canadian Brigade and DRIVE it back towards Anchorage.

Form the KB into ONE MASSIVE Group of 8 CV/CVL/CVE for Sitka and Juneau Raid. Within this group are: Akagi/Kaga/Soryu/Hiryu/Junyo/Hiyo/Ryuho/Hosho, led by Yamaguchi Tamon, with a total of 429 Aircraft. AF suppression and TF Raiding is the goal.

Send nearly 150 APs with escorts from Lingayen and surrounding ports to Manila for troop pick-up.

Production Notes:
Based on earlier commentary within the AAR I freeze 2/3 of my Oscar Production--Come on TONY!, increase Dinah and Emily production, and switch more Mitsubishi Engines to Kawasaki. I want those Tonies and Tojos! Only two months to go...

SS
I now have 3 ASW TF sweeping the sea between Dutch Harbor and Anchorage
There are 2 MSW TF doing the same thing between DH, Kodiak, and Anchorage

Air
Burma
Akyab 11 Hudson and then 6 Beaufort strike base vs. 11Z Shot down 3 Hudson and 1 Beaufort for no losses.
Myitkyina Two Raids come in 7 I-153 and 7 Lysander then the AVG with 35 P-40. 15 A3s meet them. For the day--I lose 8Z for 7 I-153/2 Lysander/3 P-40
Calcutta Try a raid on Calcutta from Akyab to see if I can hit his bombers. 16Z 35B vs. 33 Hurricane and 13 Buffalo--Lose 11Z and 13B for only 7F. I do hit the AF and destroy a bomber.

BURMA Thoughts--He has toughened up a lot here and I am NOT willing to commit my airpower in an aerial slugfest until I have Tony/Tojo. I pull back all planes, except recon, from Akyab--Myitkyina--Mandalay. Will rebuild the 3 chewed up Zero Daitai and 2 Oscar Daitai by training missions in China. For the moment they stay in Rangoon until rebuilt planes and pilots wise. Once I move new Fighter Daitai there, then we will look at new options.

China (45,35) 50F 143B Continue hitting his Chinese troops there! 389 Cas and 5 G

Australia
9,94 30B 34 Cas and 1 Tank
37,90 29F 86B 87 Cas and 4 Guns

Anchorage I have moved 5 Sally/Helen Daitai to Kodiak and they will starting attacking tomorrow or the day after. I have moved 3 Zero Daitai back to Midway for Central/South Pacific duty. This still leaves me with 4 Daitai in the theatre. There is 1 at Kodiak and 3 at Dutch Harbor. Have 2 Daitai of Bettys at Anchorage as well. Moved three Daitai of Betty back to Midway for rest and refit.

Ground
Anchorage Reinforcement Convoy almost done unloading troops and supplies. Some CD hits an AP for lite damage. US Bombardment hits and HURTS this round--572 Cas and 14 Guns! Disruption coming down. Will plan my first attack for tomorrow or day after. Got to see how bad things are...

CAPTURE Hengchow, CH! 3rd Inf Div takes town and destroys one SB2c there! Does this mean the Railline is open? I have taken Changsha and Hengchow. He has troops at Wuchow and Kwelian (Sp??) but those are one hex off the RR line. Anyone know? MOSES??!!

Sea
KB RAIDS!
Juneau--39Z, 48V, 59K No Losses Destroy 3 B-25/3 SBD/2 PBY, 8 Cas, and AF.
Sitka--32Z, 39V, 46K Lose 1V, destroy 2 C-47, 98 Cas, 4 Guns, and AF.
CONVOY SPOTTED! 14Z and 26V hit 4AK for lite damage.

Nice results for only 1 plane loss. Decide to hunt the Convoy and leave AFs for a day.

Bombard Anchorage: 2BB, 2CA 183 Cas and 6 Guns

Wolfpack losses YET another TK from that raid near New Zealand three weeks ago. By my count, I have sunk 12 TK from that convoy...

June 9, 1942

SS
MSW at Kodiak and Dutch Harbor
SS Searaven hit by LBA near Rangoon

Air
Burma
Akyab 20Z vs. Three raids--6 Hudson, 11 Beaufort, 107 Brit Bombers and 34 B-17. When the bombs, planes, and dust settles, the tally for the day sits at: 12Z and 4B lost for 1 Hudson, 7 Brit Bombers, and 25 more damaged. OOOPPS! I missed a Zero Daitai during my withdrawal. STUPID mistake...MAKE SURE all possible planes north of Rangoon are pulled back.
Myitkyina Hit but no resistance...

China (45,35) 28F 70B 104 Cas and 3 Guns---22F 78B 114 Cas and 2 Guns

Australia
9,94 23B 12 Cas
37,90 30F 84B 84 Cas

Anchorage Two raids: 13Z 35B Lose 1B, 4 Cas, 1G and 7Z 40B Lose 1B, 46 Cas, and 1G

Due to events listed below, shift 3 Daitai of Sally/Helen (Taken from Rangoon and Wuhan) to Hanoi to deal with Chinese Threat east of Lashio, Burma

Ground
Get a VERY RUDE surprise as I move an Inf Div slowly eastwards from Lashio. Cross the river at 37,30 and find 4 Chinese Divisions and 4 Corps! My Inf Div has to Shock Attack over the river and takes 2,215 Cas and loses 48G. All this for only 12 Chin Cas...my recon didn't see them at all! Move the LBA to help situation and order the Theatre Reserve Inf Div plus a Hv Art Regiment from Mandalay to Lashio...

Deliberate Attack: Anchorage! 0-1 Forts 8 to 7
Japan 84,366 816G 16V Losses 2,382 87G 6V
US/Can 69,635 715G 51V Losses 317 36G 2V

I was pretty close in actual attack ratio. Nearly 1-1--VERY GOOD SIGN. Still managed to drop the Forts so that bodes well too... Attacking Units present: 2nd, 5th, 16th, and Imperial Guards Divisions plus 1st Mixed Brigade, 3 Hv Art Regiments, 1 Mortar Battalion, 2 Engineer Regiments, and an Army HQ. Will rest them a few days and hit again. With my Fleet bombarding every few days and constant Air Attacks, I HOPE this doesn't take TOO long--I predict 4-6 weeks.

Sea
I lose an AK from earlier damage at Anchorage.

Norfolk Island--SURFACE ACTION! Wolfpack makes an actual attack!!! 2 poor Jap PT-Boats are attacked by 3CA, 6CL, 4DD. Needless to say, I lose both PTs. The TF does not bombard the Island which surprises me...indirect result of this is for me to know that there ARE targets down here worthy of hunting...

DAMN! Juneau launches a strike at my Reinforcement Convoy dropping off troops and supplies between Sitka/Juneau and Anchorage: 8 B-25 and 3 SBD damage 3AK. Have a 'Nagumo-like' feeling. I want to cover those ships so they can off-load but also hunt the convoy...

KB CONVOY ACTION! The KB flies a total of 342 sorties--with NO losses--and hits a total of 11 AP/AK at 129,36. I misjudged the rate of their movement and they were at range five so my TT Planes didn't attack. Will seek to swing a little west (Only 3 Hexes from Coast--TOO near some West Coast Bases) and try to get close enough to finish off the convoy. One AK immediately sinks.

COMPOMISE---Decide to split off Junyo/Hiyo/Ryujo to support that convoy with LRCAP and hit Juneau again. Remaining CV--Akagi/Kaga/Hiryu/Soryu/Hosho--to deal with convoy.

Akyab 3 Strikes--4 Hudson, 7 Beaufort, 47 Brit Bombers and 24 B-17. They destroy 3 Zero on the ground, lose 1B to AA, 49 Cas, and AF hit.
Myitkyina 5F 13B hit AF
Rangoon With my withdrawal, I have nearly 90F at Rangoon. If he wants to hit there it will be without fighter escort and I will chew him up.

China (37,30) 44B 64 Cas and 3G

Australia (37,90) 62F 111B 139 Cas and 1G

Anchorage Two Raids--total 15Z 72B Lose 1B, 51 Cas, 4 Guns

Ground
Deliberate Attack: Australia (37,90) 2 SNLF vs Darwin Def Brigade 37-1 129 Cas and 1 Gun

Shock Attack: China (37,30) 14-1 4th Inf Div forced back across the river towards Lashio, Burma. Only lose 112 Cas and 4G for 640 Chinese and 14 Guns.

No Bombardment at Anchorage. I wonder if Wolfpack is concerned with supplies? He was bombarding every day and has stopped...hmmm....

Sea
10 B-25 hit a Bombardment TF heading for Juneau CA Haguro takes a Bomb for no damage.

KB HIT!!!! DAMMIT--It WAS a Nagumo-like feeling---my TF decides to refuel TOO close to enemy LBA and only moves south and NOT west (away from the coast).

From Prince Rupert flies out, seemingly, the entire LBA of the West Coast 132 P-36 and P-40 escorting 48 Bombers (all twin engine Brit or US) my 58 Zeros (CAP 70%) meet them and a MASSIVE FURBALL Occurs--most of my fighter pilots have experience in the high-70s/low-80s and the US Fighters begin to fall! As they close over the TF, nearly 100 (94 reported) fighters and 13 Bombers are destroyed in A2A combat. I lose only 17Z...that is 6-1 kill ratio!

The remaining 35 Bombers drop their bombs over the KB. The first 12-14 miss and I think things are OK. Then the hits start to occur...by the end of the raid, Hiryu takes 1B, Soryu takes 2B, and, hit hardest, Kaga takes 3B--each are 500 lb GP bombs.

Damage doesn't look TOO bad--Hiryu 12 SYS--10 Fires, Soryu 21 SYS--15 Fires, and Kaga 42 SYS--19 Fires. Order everyone WEST to clear out of Dodge! Kaga can still make 18 knots which should do it. Raise CAP to 90% and order Junyo, Hiyo, and Ryujo back to cover the fleet. DAMN!

This might not be TOO bad if I can pull back. Luckily there is NO Flotation damage to any of them.

While this fiasco is occurring, my planes pummel his Convoy. Two Strikes come in with 26Z, 75V, and 94K--They paste every ship in the convoy with bombs and torpedoes...down go 2AK and 5AP! Definely NOT worth it...

37,30 49B 140 Cas and 1G

Spot two units approaching my lodgement between Juneau and Anchorage. Wonder if he will try to kick me out...doubt he has the strength...

Sea
Good news--BAD news

In a Japanese version of the Battle of Balikpapan, 4DD catch a HUGE Convoy of 30+ ships at Perth! My DD charge in like foxes in the hen house! With Guns and TT, they sink 5AK. Tragically, one IJN DD takes a 3 inch hit and EXPLODES from a Critical Hit...the other 3 get away without issue. They are attacked by Perth Air--35B--and miss!

Bombardment of Anchorage: 2BB, 1CA, 2CL---GOOD Results! 2 Recon planes destroyed, 2,640 Cas, 51G, 14V, and AF/Pt--Got to like that!

A limited strike comes out of Anchorage--6 P-36--attack shipping and 2 are destroyed.

KB DISASTER! I completely forgot about the TF Splitting off function within this STUPID thing! Kaga must have crossed over to 50% SYS Damage. She splits off and the rest of the KB moves away leaving her WITHOUT ANY COVER. Needless to say...55 2E Bombers find her and put 27 500lb bombs into her...she sinks! This is partially my fault. Didn't think about that possiblity. Should have put my Z on LRCAP instead...add to this the fact that since she was around 40 SYS damage, her planes didn't divert and since I was sure we could get away I didn't fly them to Kodiak, I lose ALL her planes...what a disaster!

On the bright side, Hiryu and Soryu are fine. Fires are nearly out and they are headed to Dutch Harbor then home for repairs.

Will have to re-organize now...

Don't worry you still have our game to gloat over. Think how I felt when you sank my two CV's in a carrier batttle in which none of my planes took of.

Imagine how the Japanese high command felt when they got the Midway results. Where do you send the bug report for that result!!!!

I remember many posts ago when I warned you about his LBA. Now you pay the bill! Allthough it wasn´t his 4E monsters.

My rule of thumb when it comes to any Naval unit being attacked is they get orders first thing next turn. Then go to the rest of my forces before returning to double check to ensure things go correctly before the "E" button is pushed.
When it comes to the CV's, regardless of which side I'm playing, they get tripled checked!! They are too valuable, especially as the Japanese, to be lost to "OE" . . . Operator Error

I have lost track of the various AAR's that I have read about someones naval forces suffering lose due to incorrect commands.

Unfortunately, as the Japs, you don't have the Essex class CV's to replace early war losses.

Thank you guys. I should have thought it through. Don't know if there was anything I could have done to save the CV though.

Bottom Line--I lost sight of the mission and I split up the CVs. Just like Nagumo! Had two conflicting missions and forged a compromise that weakened the force. Had I left Junyo, Hiyo, and Ryujo there, I would have had another 30-40Z on CAP and NOTHING would have gotten through. Live and learn!

Considering we have been at war for nearly 7 months, I consider myself fortunate to have only had this happen as a major mistake.

If you set everything else in the TF as an Escort TF and have it follow (or include) the damaged ship (Kaga in this case), would Kaga still have split off?

I think that happens automatically. It has always been my experience with Uncommon Valor and WitP that a crippled ship splits away with 1DD.

There is also that rule about placing CAP over a damaged CV. The game doesn't really allow it to happen. Had I shifted my CAP to Long-Range then she might have gotten some Fighter Cover...

Its just so hard to judge the risk sometimes. You want to accomplish something and you just think you will probably get away with taking a chance. Next thing you know a couple CV's are at the bottom and you have to figure out how to deal with it.

AMEN Mister Moses!

Didn't get any turns in yesterday due to life schedules but still had one I hadn't gotten in from the weekend.

June 12, 1942

SS
MSW at Kodiak and Dutch Harbor
I am having lots of ASW Attacks by my TF on his SS. No successes but it is managing to keep his SS down...

Air
Burma
Akyab Two raids of 5 Hudson and 8 Beaufort costs Wolfpack 1 plane, and hurts me for 15 Cas, AF
Myitkyina 13 Bombers hit the AF.

Alaska
Anchorage 18Z 101B Lose 1 plane, 58 Cas, 1 Gun, 1 Vehicle, AF/Pt My first BIG raid!
117,28 15B 56 Cas and 2 Guns--this is the Canadian Brigade that came down from Anchorage

I am going to use my 5 Daitai of Helen/Sally over Anchorage and 2 Daitai of Betty farther east. Still have 3 Daitai of Zero and 1 Daitai of Oscars here.

Australia (36,91) 128 B 96 Cas

Air Reinforcements! Don't get to say this often as the Japanese... I just got a Daitai of Sally's--assigned them to 4th Fleet and sent them to Wuhan for training (they have a 49 for start ). Also just formed an A3 Daitai and in two days get another A3, two Bomber (Helen/Sally), and one Val Daitai. Will assign these all to 4th Fleet. It makes for a total of 190 new planes. After some training, I think they will be sent SE to Noumea for operations down there.

Land
Australia (12,94) 430-1 Shock Attack! My Inf Brigade forces this BF back (again). I have now taken the crossroads that leads towards Perth or Adelaide. As soon as I move, then Wolfpack will know my intentions. I have two Brigades here. I think one will push him farther south so he cannot see what I am doing and the other will hold the crossroads.

GROUND PLANNING: The damage to the KB reminds me that at this point I need to focus on ONE target at a time! I have decided to follow through with Anchorage (have a former China Army Brigade headed there) and prepare for Operation Typhoon--the capture of New Zealand. I will use ALL of the Philippine Troops there: 150,000+ troops. I chose this because I can isloate the area, cut off his reinforcements, and destroy a large number of troops. Perhaps I can also get at some shipping and warships...

Sea
Bombardment of Juneau--2CA, 2CL, 6DD--destroy 1 B-25, 17 Cas, 2 G, 1V, AF/Pt

Japanese and US both lose an AP due to earlier damage.

KB RE-ORGINIZATION
With losing Kaga, I will reorganize the fleet. I will still keep 2 CTF but not 3. Tentative thinking is:

KB1 to comprise--Akagi, Junyo, Hiyo, Ryujo, Hosho (231 Planes--92Z, 58V, 81K) It will stay up north until Alaska Operation is finished. Will have the benefit of LBA to back it up.

KB2 to comprise--Shokaku, Zuikaku, Hiryu, Soryu, and Ryuho (300 Planes--108Z, 90V, 102K) First have to get everyone repaired and then it will operate in SE Pacific supporting Operation Typhoon.

CVL Zuiho is under repair and will get an assigned when she is ready in about 3 months.

Thoughts?

Very, very bad luck here.

I hate to inform you but there is a way of saving such ships. It's not absolutely foolproof but this works usually.

Normally I would form a separate force with the damaged CV and a few escorts and then have my other CV TFs follow that. The followers move faster and so they all stay in the same hex. Therefore no need for the unreliable LCAP. They all benefit from the whole hex CAP. Make sure refuelling is off in case the destroyers decide it's time for a drink and one TF becomes left behind.

A capital ship will detach itself from any TF apart from an Escort Mission with one DD once it goes over 50 sys. As all this occurs during the turn resolution not your turn you need to plan ahead. With the terrible IJN damage control any ship with over 30 sys and a good amount of fires or float damage is probably better off being put in an escort TF just in case it goes over 50 in the turn resolution and splits off. Yes sadly the following TFs will happily go after just one DD in the original TF while the valuable ship is left behind to be mugged So an escort mission, even if it is just for the damaged ship is a must really.

Some people, as mentioned, just turn the whole TF into an escort and you do have more AA that way. But if he did have enough to break through the next day I would rather they just sank my cripple than the whole strike force even if I do take down a few more planes with flak. So I think this is a slightly more risky option.

It also depends a little on how you handle CVs. I rarely have more than 2 in a TF playing either side. I then stack CV TFs in one hex and follow the slowest. This naturally changes to follow the cripples where necessary If you are more of a one big TF player then the single escort mission may suite you better

That is some sound advice that I had never thought of! I will use that escort option with everyone follow if something like this happens again. Figured that I had about a 60-40 chance to save Kaga before the auto-separation occurred. Oh, well...

Got to ask about your picture. Are you an aquarium person? I am hugely into fish--have 2 Reef Tanks, 3 African Cihclid Tanks and 2 'happy' fish tanks!

Yes. Kept fish for many years now. No Reef Tanks yet but I have two Tropical tanks. Loaches and Catfish mostly

I'd love a Reef Tank but they are very pricey over here. Glad to meet a another fish fan
