Could not resist providing this picture, a real fighter at sea not some radial engined junk !

Its a sea hurricane from 880 squadron still flying

'Cept maybe a 4360 - EGAD what a sound. But when you hear a Merlin cooking, it's not bad either...Any of them will do over the Lycoming flat fours..

Liquid cool is all fine and dandy until you take a round in the radiator or into the coolant tank and then you hope that you can glide the 300 some odd miles back to mother. If not that is a long frigging time to doggy paddle.

I haven't had the chance to see a 4360 run in real life, I am hoping to go out to the air races in Reno next fall I think a few guys still run them there

And that is exactly why the USN only used radial engines.....there are many stories of planes coming back to the carrier with one or even two pots completely shot off yet the prop was still spinning.

The decision for the USN to use air cooled over a liquid cooled engine came about I believe in the 30's. The radials were more dependable as shown by the Spirit of St. Louis. They are easier to maintain and don't need a cooling fluid. That's the most like reason. One less item to procure and store onboard ship.

An ole addage;" If you can smell a radial your burning oil or your mixture is too rich. Also if there ain't no oil leaking out of her there ain't no oil in her!"

thats (radial eng) another feature of the "Jug" that made the P-47 so rugged and formidable. I have read accounts atoo of P-47's having multiple cylinder's shot off and still making it back home!
