Kagawa Kiyoshi squeezed the trigger of the 6.5mm machine gun again as his loader, Nakamura Haru, finished reloading the weapon. He watched his tracer rounds walk out to sea as the rest of the men in his cave fired their weapons at the landing craft looming out of the predawn light. Enemy bullets slapped all around the cave entrance, and the occasional shell (75mm, he guessed) exploded nearby with no effect.

His machine gun was having an equal lack of effect on the Marine landing vehicle that he was raking with fire. That would change soon, as the Marines would have to negotiate the cliffs surrounding his small hill (122), and the much larger one jutting up from the beach to his north (300). Then he would be able to strike them, and do his duty to the Empire, and the Emperor. He shouted for more ammo, and helped Haru reload.

Report from the beachhead to Col. Higginbotham :

"All hell is breaking loose, sir. We gotta get the tanks forward. We've taken out a couple of bunkers, but as soon as one gets destroyed, another one opens up on us."

Higginbotham thinks to himself: "Where's the air support that Geiger promised us? That damn Halsey is somewhere out there, chasing what's left of the Jap navy."

....the noise is incredible here on the beach. Reports are in of several lost LVT 3's near the Junkyard, with the Marines killed before they could fire a shot. A massive explosion to the north of Hill 300 means a Japanese gun casement has ceased to be a problem. From my vantage, I can see Marines being cut down by fire from a cave near the center of the hill. Wait! A Marine assault team has manuevered close enough to turn a flamethrower on the cave! Yes! Japanese are bursting out of the cave, burning from the jet of fuel. They are quickly put down by the Marines, and there is one less obstacle in their path.

South of me, I see Marine armor coming ashore at the wharf. A Marine halftrack armed with a 75mm gun is firing almost before it is off the landing craft. The gun manages to knock out an enemy rifle position, but not before more Marines are slain, their bravery no shield from Japanese bullets.

Reports from senior officers indicate that Marine air cover is busy with the sector to the north of this battalion's beaches! Air support is not likely due to this. A blow to the morale of these Marines, but the constant blasts from
Sigourney and Portland are reassuring to this writer. More from Brock Ironchest, Red Beach Two, later....

Col. Higginbotham has established HQ onshore, and has received a report of a dug-in Jap tank on the reverse slope of Hill 300 -- it's wreaking havoc on the left flank. Progress is being made on Hill 122 -- two more emplacements have been silenced. On the right, that Gun Casement at the junkyard, which overlooks Red Three, is proving to be a very tough nut to crack.

"How much armor does Afrikamoto have? Is there a mobile counterstrike force just waiting to ambush me?"

He reaches for his canteen, which contains a mix of water and rum, takes a quick swig, grimaces for a second, and ponders his next move.

These are the types of defenses we are encountering-- you don't see them until they open up on you. The Japanese have shifted their strategy -- no more suicidal banzai charges -- they simply dig-in, deeply, and wait for us. Their intent is only to kill Marines, and delay us as long as possible.

How about posting the map of your finished turn ?? and with only catching areas where the action has passed so to say, on the smallest magnification of hexes. The screen capture program must have a sizer for such things?
RT And I forgot to ask how many points did each side get to purchase with ??

Murakuma Yukio slapped another round into the Marine LVT that had already taken a hit from the 47mm gun on his Type 3 Ka-Chi tank. This time, the enemy vehicle came apart in a shower of small explosions, and rapid pop-pop-pops as the round detonated its store of machine gun ammunition, then fuel. A crew member managed to drag himself out of the wreckage, but Yukio held his fire, waiting for another enemy vehicle to crawl its way through the deep sand into his line of sight. The Americans had no chance! He would never give up, never surrender, and was confident that his comrades would fight to the last man also. Against the soft American Marines, how could they be defeated? He smiled and the turret slid to the left a few degrees as another Marine LVT churned its way into his view...

Yamato Haru and the rest of the gun casement's crew fought furiously for their lives. The tremendous roar of the 120mm naval howitzer threatened to knock them from their feet as it fired at a Marine M3 Flame Tank only 100 yards aways! The round went wild, sending a spray of water and sand skyward behind the deadly little vehicle. Yamato fired his bolt action rifle at the enemy soldiers swarming closer. He could see their flamethrowers and bazookas, and knew it was only a matter of moments. There were at least thirty of them. He managed to hit one of the Marines, who tumbled bonelessly to the sand. A stream of liquid fire bathed the outside of the casement, its heat causing the concrete to crack and spall. The naval howitzer went off again - BOOM! This time the round went wide to the right, just short of the nimble armored dragon as it continued to bathe the casement in flames.

An enemy bazooka round slapped into the wall behind him, detonating with a sharp *crack*. He could not recall even seeing the round come through the gunport, nor who fired it. He centered his sights on another enemy soldier. Before he could pull the trigger there was a flash of light and huge *THUMP*, felt more than heard, and he was laying on the floor, the howitzer canted crazily sideways and resting on his smashed legs. The gun crew lay all about, ripped to shreds by whatever had destroyed the gun. He tried to struggle to his feet when the enemy grenades bobbed in through the gaping, jagged hole where the firing port had been.

Private journal of Col Higginbotham: This haiku was found on the body of an officer. Sh*t, Afrikamoto's gonna fight to the bitter end. No retreat, no surrender. The battle has only just begun.

Riun - The Marines got slightly over 3500 points, not counting their landing craft or A0 unit. The amphibious vehicles were purchased out of those points though. The Japanese got slightly more than 2000, not including their HQ, or the tank battalion ( ).

Report to division commander, General Rupertus, who is safely ensconced on a command ship well offshore: "Initial objectives achieved or within close range. Casualties acceptable. Progress is steady, but slow. Enemy is well-entrenched. Request more offshore fire support, if available. "

With such vivid descriptions, I don't need pictures, there's a movie of it playing in my head.

"When I was a kid, television was called books", Peter Falk in The Princess Bride.

Wow, this is some good stuff. It doesn't look like Hill 217 is quite in the action yet, but mark my words . . .

I should really start doing PBEM once I get the hang of the game. I'm actually getting draws instead of crushing defeats now against the computer.

It's my favourite way to play the game. I find that I'm far more motivated to try and beat a human opponent than I am to kill the AI.

Doesn't mean I do particularly well though...

Afrikamoto's mortars have just opened up. He's got 81mm, 90mm and a couple of those "Pistol Pete" 150s. Well, then, I guess it's time to contact my Naval support.

...an example of the strength of the defenses these tough, determined Marines face. Just in front of me a stream of high velocity projectiles from Hill 217, which I am told were 25mm rounds from a hidden Japanese double-barreled anti-aircraft gun, raked through a squad of Marines supporting an M3 Flame Tank's assault on a cave 50 yards in front of them. The enemy burst of fire rolled over the tank and squad, killing or wounding seven Marines and spalling the side of the tank, injuring a crew member. Almost simultaneously, a small anti-tank gun round from Hill 217 ripped the flame projector from the tank, miraculously not destroying the vehicle! More enemy rounds walked up the side of the tank as its stream of flame was abrubtly cut off before it could finish the enemy cave defenses.

Japanese mortar and artillery rounds are impacting everywhere, scattering bits of jungle, sand, equipment, and men in all directions. Will these Marines waver and fail? Judging by their grim, angry looks, and fixed bayonets, it does not appear they are going to give up. Brock Ironchest reporting from Hill 122. More to co-
*woooshBOOM!*

"Keep your #@&%ing heads down, dammit!", shouted Giovanni to the Marines sheltered in a shell hole near where the combat correspondant had been filming. "You want to end up like him?!?" The small, wiry Sergeant motioned towards the remains of the reporter, which wasn't much after the 90mm mortar round's impact.

"Meyers! Get down there to the Lieutenant and tell him our tank is done. Let him know we're going to press the attack on that cave, but we need some damned satchel charges, and we need them yesterday!" With a nod, Meyers crawled out of the crater, wiggling like a snake through the sand until he was over the lip. Machinegun rounds slapped all around him, impacting with little vriip, vriip, vriip, sounds and kicking up small geysers of sand. The boy made it without being hit, and Giovanni popped his head up for a *very* fast peek at the cave. He was rewarded with a faceful of sand as more bullets chewed into the lip of the shell crater. "Whoever has grenades left, get them ready! The rest of you will provide cover fire when we go!"
