ORIGINAL: Herr Colonel That's great that you could get them to watch 'Gettysburg.' It's one of my favorites - I always wondered how it would sit with school-age kids to watch in History class. What I want to know, though, is since the movie is something like four hours long, did it take a week to show it? My wife is an assistant principal, and judging from her stories, I wonder if the administration would have the patience for that. :) Otherwise, I think it's fantastic that they show an interest in that film. Yep, it took over 4 class periods, but was worth it. I was talking and explaining throughout the movie. It gave them a great grasp of what the Civil War was really like. I'll be showing "All Quiet on the Western Front" once we hit WWI in a couple of weeks. I'm looking forward to getting to WWII with them. We'll try and get some of the veteran Navajo "Code talkers" to come in and talk with the kids about the war. We've got a few survivors around the reservation. BTW... out here the Navajo LOVE "Windtalkers" despite the bad ratings in the Matrix Forum where it is often nominated for "worst movie of all time". As to the administration... I haven't had the principal in my class once this year for longer than 3 minutes. I do what I like (except with the @#$%^& administrative password on the computers that won't let me install anything!} Wait till I get through my probabtionary year... then I'm going to start a revolution out here!
