Hey boys, I have a shaving question. I have thick facial hair, and it is a pain in the butt to shave because it never comes off. I can't use a disposable razor for longer than two days because it does not stay sharp enough to cut through the new hair each day. Should I go to a straight razor? Where in the US can you buy one thats a real blade and not just a straight razor-loader? Also, my skin is sensitive, and the grain of the hair seems to grow in a spiral instead of one direction. What can I do to prevent razor burn on this crazy grain? Well, anyway, for what its worth I hope everyone gets a chuckle out of this If any one knows where the best place to start is let me know.

I'd go for the beard. Keep it trimmed short (but full, not one of those sad goatee efforts) and the girls will love it. Mrs Herts has no problem with mine, anyway Even if they don't, you sound like one of those men nature just intended to be either bearded, or affluent enough to pay for a professional shave every morning!
Why can't you just use a new disposable every couple of days? They aren't expensive. Have you tried an electric razor? I used to use a Philips, and they are pretty good (much better than Braun or Remington).
I've done the whole beard thing, and yes I like it! The problem with a beard is that in the business world and sales people are less likely to trust you with one. As for the electric razor, no irritation but its not close. The problem with the safety razor is that it causes irritation on my skin. It causes lots of irritation on my neck in particular because the grain is not straight its like a circle or a spiral. I am looking for a close shave with no irritation. The electric razor can't get close enough, so I wonder if a straight razor might help.

Painful doesn't begin to describe the process though, so maybe you'd better stick with growing a beard.
Having downloaded your pic and viewed it, I would say the beard makes you look very distinguished and I do not think it will hurt you in the business world if you keep it neatly groomed. I like men with a beard personally (as long as it isn't a Grizzly Adams "Mountain Man" look)!

This is one product that I swear by. It's a pre-shave cream that softens your bead, and it's simply amazing. It's hard to find, coming mostly from Italy. But look out for it. There are a few places you can order it from online.

I've been tempted to give a cut-throat a go but the cost of entry seems kind of high and my beard is not thick enough to justify it.
One tip that people might find useful is that with a conventional blade, shaving cream is not necessary. I was told this years ago and haven't used it since. The trick is to shave before showering so that one's face still has it's natural oil coating. Just wet your face and rub it briskly with hot water and don't dry it. Then pre-wet the shaver and start on the top of the cheeks where your beard is lightest. It takes a little getting used to but you get a better shave and I don't miss spending cash on shaving cream.

LOL I liked the fact he says he can't use the razor after two days, I go though 6 when I cut my beard and I use cutters and a ele to get it close enough for the razor to get to work

Easiest method: Use an electric razor, followed by a disposable razor. The electric razor will do the heavy work and the disposable razor will ensure a smooth result. The disposable won't clog up as quickly...

I use one disposable safety blade for ions. Just clean the blade with your thumb after the shave so it doesnt clog up.

Thanks Neilster I am going to browse through this and check with some local shops. I hope the online stuff is cheaper, but I will have to see. That is interresting stuff about not using cream. Shaving first then showering does not work for me. I have tried that. On my face, it just makes the irritation worse. I may give that none shaving cream approach a try. I don't know what life is like in Tasmania, but here in the States the Mach 3 and Quattro are popular. They have 3 three and four blades loaded into them. I have been using the regular double edge sensor blade that Gillette makes. No matter what, the straight edge just looks cooler.

Though I could shave twice a day, it seems like it would be murder to do that.

I have alwyas felt that having a shave after the shower is more efficaint.
During the shower, your face gets warm under the hot water and the skin stretches slightly. Ultimately you can get a slightly closer shave.
Note that if you use an electric razor its imperitave that you shave before the shower, while the bathroom is dry. Firstly, water and electricity don't mix and secondly, with the softer skin an electric razor does a worse job than when the face is dry.
There are plenty of disposable razors that have 2 or 3 blades.
The first blade shves close and the second blade shaves even closer!
Many years ago, I saw a movie called "The Groove Tube" which was pretty outrageous for it's time. It spoofed Television commercials. One bit was an ad for a "Triple Trak" razor (the double bladed ones had just come out). The ad went on about how the first blade cut the beard and the second came along and cut it even closer... and the 3rd cut it off below the skin line.
The punch line was "Triple Trak... because we think you'll believe anything!"
When they started advertising 3 bladed razors I had to laugh at the memory... and now we have "Quadra-TraK" 4 bladed razors? Wow... they really do believe that we'll believe anything!
BTW... I got a copy of "The Groove Tube" from NetFlix and that bit isn't in there now. I know it was there... do I smell a plot by the razor industry? The movie has been "scrubbed" to remove the embarrassment?
