Apparently, this is a real photo - i first saw it in US Naval Institute Proceedings in their yearly photo contest. Alas, there was no comment about what happened immediately after the photo was snapped.

Besides recruiting the ambush mice, Nik has also enlisted gangsta ducks to put the squeeze on the cats...

EDIT: hey, what happened to the pic!! Let's redo this:

Where do you suppose the picture was taken? Is that the Golden Gate bridge in the background. I don't think they have sharks that big up there.

This also seems like very odd behavior for a shark.

yeah, looks like SF to me. There are Great Whites (which i think is the shark here) off the coast of California, although not like they have in Oz or South Africa.

Great Whites have done some really screwy stuff. One weird incident is where it killed some kids after swimming about a dozen miles up a freshwater creek in New England.

Hah! i had wondered, but i figured the USNI had checked it out. Usually companies require slides for photo contests which are much harder to fake than prints (although, i guess if you are determined enough, you could fake a slide also). i think that the photo had actually won a prize in the USNI contest...

I have done a good deal of open sea kayaking in and around the Bay area and never heard of any Great Whites in the area, not in any quantity at least. I've heard of quite a few in Souther Cal. Also, I have heard of lots of other sharks in the area, don't recall which ones, but MUCH smaller ones. Although, it wouldn't surprise me if there were larger sharks, as there is a plentiful supply of seal and porpois (sp?)

From an article on Great Whites:

"Great white sharks have been observed along the coastlines of California to Alaska, the east coast of the USA and most of the Gulf coast, Hawaii, most of South America, South Africa, Australia (except the north coast), New Zealand, the Mediterranean Sea, West Africa to Scandinavia, Japan, and the eastern coastline of China and southern Russia. "

EDIT: iirc from my readings (years ago), they are not seen very often around SF, but they definitely are there...
