ORIGINAL: kellyc It's a fake... http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/shark.asp I have done a good deal of open sea kayaking in and around the Bay area and never heard of any Great Whites in the area, not in any quantity at least. I've heard of quite a few in Souther Cal. Also, I have heard of lots of other sharks in the area, don't recall which ones, but MUCH smaller ones. Although, it wouldn't surprise me if there were larger sharks, as there is a plentiful supply of seal and porpois (sp?) From an article on Great Whites: "Great white sharks have been observed along the coastlines of California to Alaska, the east coast of the USA and most of the Gulf coast, Hawaii, most of South America, South Africa, Australia (except the north coast), New Zealand, the Mediterranean Sea, West Africa to Scandinavia, Japan, and the eastern coastline of China and southern Russia. "
EDIT: iirc from my readings (years ago), they are not seen very often around SF, but they definitely are there...
