*Addendum: after a few minor flaws were fixed, the program IS safe to use, so my concerns are no longer applicable.

** Addendum 2, March 2: to help clear things up, I wrote to Dave Heath, and he in turn spoke with Mike & Bernie. It all turned out well. I like happy endings.

His program works just find, and it fills a nich between Fred's good programs and the ingame programs. This game needs people like him to keep spwaw going strong. Otherwise a lot of new players will go else where since matrix will not let the programers devote a lot of time to the old girl. So don't be calling post like this one spam or otherwise until you and others check it out. If you don't want to use it, that is your call. But others out there have been asking for programs like it to fix some inconsistancies in the program.
That is my two cents.

This is advertised to be able to change the EXP, Morale, and Rally values within the Mech.exe.

I can't give an opinion on it, because I have niether used it, or have the experience needed to use it without breaking something. However, it isn't spam; it's just a post leting this board know of an editor that has been released for this game. So it's on topic, and may be useful to others.

DonDoom,

I would feel more comfortable with a third-party program that affects the mech.exe if and when Michael Wood gets a chance to look "under the hood" and lets us know if the thing is safe to drive. OK?

Why??
Freds was not checked out by matrix, but thousands use them every day on all the sp games and many more, what is the difference?
If you do like is asked by any third party and use a copy of your files to check out the program, how is that going to be a proplem?? I have checked out his program and it works fine, so have numerious others from the sound of it. There was a problem with it and he fixed it already, which is a faster responce time I have seen from any programer including matrix. Since you use a copy of the file you loss no data if there is a problem.

Ok, I went over to the Depot and saw all the jumping thru hoops and stuff that you gotta do to make it work. No thanks. I'm happy with my Marines having an average experience of 58-59 when they land on the 'Canal.

What is your problem with community members seeking a way to correct values that more than a just a few think are unrealistic Glenn?

No one is talking about making any nation superhuman...it's just a way of giving them ratings that are more historical than the inaccurate, stereotypical ones that some (mostly minor nations) are bedeviled with within the game engine as it stands.

Just because you are fine with the ratings as they (which I gather would be a far different picture if the beloved Marines weren't rated as they are) doesn't mean that you speak for the community as a whole.

There have been a good many people begging Mike Woods to please incorporate a way to do just this in any new/future editor...so it's not some off the wall movement by some minority faction to try and change history.

Don't like it...don't use it. However, be polite enough to let others make their own choice.

No problem with me, Orzel. As of late, I've joined the majority who believe that some of the minors ARE under-rated.

This is an easy fix. As for the Marines, you well know that I campaigned for their ratings to be lowered to realistic levels, and in that I got what I wanted. So, you're right, I got spoiled and kept quiet about all the rest.

I hope that Mike will ultimately put a sliding national ratings system into the preferences screen.

As such it would appear that my simple attempt to add to this game have proved fruitless.

I will take you above advice and cease such endeavours.

I suppose my last comment in this place is simply to thank you for the support on this.

What I do next or do not produce for the community at large will depend on many things..

The oob editor was a a simple and novel program. That was just an alternatibe to the std. game one. The latest game version of teh OOB editor, v5 has many features I have no intension of duplicating.

The mechedit was just a simple one for the many people who play against the AI.

The ANZAC OOB is not complete but who cares, I don't anymore.

At present there are other games where I do not have to be attacked for the work I try to do to help the community at large.

Again thanks to the support, enjoy the game. There will be many changes, I believe, comming with respect to what you can edit.

Glenn.. Thanks for reminding me not to spend my time here.

By the way there are more than 1250 vehicle slots .. BUT no editor ..

I can't believe what i just read ? Someone here works on a mod and is accused of spam. H2H alters mech as well and far from being spam is actually much better than any vanilla version.
Its seems that there is only one person here that passes off others mods or efforts as spam (while worshipping Mike) so I'd take no notice of him.
I'm very happy to try out the file and look forward too it

The editor is very easy to use. If you can used freds spil program, this one is easy. My boy vinny was able to use it following the four steps with no problems and he is only 11!
It uses the command line input. So if you remember the old dos games it works the same way.

I have no problem with it...it does what it says it does, it doesn't "break" the mech.exe, and it gives us the ability to change those hard-coded ratings, so we can use both the 8.403 improvements AND exp/mor ratings that are more enjoyable to play with. Since any change to the mech.exe will change it's 'modified date', any attempt to use this to 'finagle' a PBEM game will be caught during setup.

As it stands, no harm, no foul. The program is easy to use, once you remember some of the basic DOS usage:
For XP users
1. Locate the "cmd.exe" file in your Windows/System32 folder.
2. Copy this into the folder created when you unZipped thr Mechedit file.
3. Copy the 8.403 mech.exe into this folder.
4. Open the Command Line window by double-clicking the cmd.exe file.
5. At the prompt, enter the proper command, found in the ReadMe file.

To make personal changes to the ratings, open one of the .csv files included with a spreadsheet editor, change those numbers you want to, save as a new file, then load as before.

Actually it is surprising ...
Really there is someone who fears game improvements?

This is not a super-cheater tool.
As Flash pointed out, any attempt to cheat a PBEM game, with different settings, will result in a game crash. So, there is no way to be a bad boy with this one.

As far as I know, there has been no copy-right violation on Panzer Leo's H2H, so why this "simple" tool would scare someone?

This utility allows gamers to EDIT morale and experience values.
Since it seems that the programmer and his Team are satisfied with the values they included in any release so far, I really see no problems allowing players just to do what they like with their own SP.
Fred Chlanda's SHP Editor allows gamers to design what they like, so what's wrong with this one?

One of the true things that makes SP ageless is that gamers can customize it at their will.

Official releases are one thing (many thanks to those who spend their time on them), gamers' Mods or tools are other (many thanks also to those who spend their time on them).

I do think that there is no problem using this tool. If people wants to use it, this is fine. If people doesn't want to, this is fine as well.

But we must ALWAYS show the proper respect for those who are trying to improve things! Especially if gratuitously.

In my very humble opinion, the correct approach to persons (and active members) like The Desert Rat, it would have had to be a bit different.

Mau Fox.

OK, glad to hear that the minor flaws in the program were worked out.

Thanks to the players who took it out for a test drive.

If this changes the Mech.exe, didn't Mike Wood say that was illegal in the Civil War Mod thread, thus he could not comment? Just wondering.

Either way, what does changing the numbers in the mech.exe do exactly? I don't get it. Isn't changing the OOB enough? Still learning how to customize stuff here, before I try my hand at design, so the more info I have the better.

The ratings we are talking about are the Experience and Morale for Leaders and Troops. These numbers are used with the Historical Ratings preference to represent the base Experience and Morale of the various nations' armies. Currently, these numbers are hard-coded in the mech.exe, and only a generalized change can be made by using the Preference section. The 7 ratings are separated for each year of the war; 1930-39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45 to 1949.

These numbers are not part of the OOB editing system; certain formation codes in the OOB will modify these ratings, such as Elite (+10% Exp/Mor) or Second-line (-10% Exp/Mor), but the ratings themselves can't be changed.

Desert Rat...Thank you for the kindness of your great editor.
Please do not be put off by the treatment of anybody who might have shown insensitivity to your initial release of the editor...It has been wanted by so many for so long, the remarks made might have even been spurred by jeolousy ?
Nobody "died and left anybody boss", so you should just take this criticism with a true grain of salt.
Obviously, the rest of us applaud your efforts.
KG himself is not a bad sort, he has himself devoted a lot of time to altering aspects of the game, and nobody has considered his work "spam" or such.
Apoligising, has not been a natural thing for him in the past, nothing against him, its' just how he was brought up, (I suspect?).

Glenn, you never cease to amaze me...

"Safe to drive"??? Get REAL! It's a program, not a backyard built sportscar you're thinking of taking for a cruise down the interstate. As with any program downloaded from the Internet, you use it, with caution, at your own risk. Some simple procedures, like using a virus scanner and testing it on a copy of the mech.exe will minimize that risk.

As for Mike needing to "look under the hood" before it can be "released", that would only apply if MG decided to somehow "sanction" the program, or otherwise endorse it. As it stands, it's a tool, freely developed and offered with no warranty or guarantees, that you are free to use, or not use, as you choose. The author of the tool does not claim any affiliation with MG, nor does he even suggest or imply that the tool is endorsed or sanctioned by them. As far as I can see, his tool violates no copyrights or trademarks, so just how, and why, should MG even bother getting involved with it?

And, the last time I checked, "SPAM" was a registered trademark of the Hormel Corporation, and should only be used with their permission. Perhaps you should let them "look under the hood" of your posts, before you "release" them? ;)

TDR, your work is appreciated and valued by the vast majority of the SP:WaW community. I know Glenn's comments ticked you off, and you're angry and upset right now, but how about stepping back, taking a break, then rejoining us at a later date?
