A bit of a hypothetical question as as far as I know no developer that is linked with Matrix has announced anything lto do with consols.

The only reason I am mentioning it is that I have had an original Xbox for about three years and always thought that a good strat based war game could do very well..

The games that I have played a lot on it are of the more involved sort.

Such as Morrowind - Silent Hill - cuthullu -

But then again I liked Whacked, Tiger woods & Halo

I can't see it. The major selling point of the X-Box 360 is the graphics, and 'Matrix' style game would never sell enough copies to get back a fraction of the cost of development of a graphics intensive title. I just can't see where the market is - are there really that many people desperate for a good strat game that have a console but no PC?

But that is just it...... a graphic beauty thats a great strat game. Something like Jagged Alliance with great big shiny knobs, spliced with something like Battle Isle. The thing I do not want to see is not just another rehash of the N64's Glorious Goldeneye (doom, Far Cry, Halo etc)

So many console games are generic - There is room out there for a strat blockbuster!

No, there isn't. Consoles aren't meant to have strategy games played on them...

There IS an entry level war game for the original X box which is Dai Senryaku VII (Panzer General+Advance wars)\
IT was priced less than normal but still not a big seller at all
I could not agree more with Hertson!!

Well, I wouldnt mind a good strat game for my PS2.

I seem to remember something along the lines of Panzer General on the PS1.

I think the keyboard and mouse is best for strategy games.

The console controlers are great for sports games but not so hot for strat games.

Plus playing strat games is another kind of mind-set all together. I dont see the demand in the console world. I mean not even the flashbang genre has never really hit the big time in the console world.

I did see (i think) Civ2 or something for a console.

Well i don't know if they plan on making a mouse and keyboard just for the 360,but it looks like it can support them.

I'd buy wargames/strategy games/whatever for it.I used to buy them all the time for the Sega and PS1.There was actually an old game released for the PS2,Kings bounty(It goe's by another name also in the Might and Magic series, but i can't remember which number it was). They updated the graphics but kept it the same game as the original. So you still had to siege castles, raise armies, fight out your battles on the tactical map.Manage your expenses and income. That game was a great find for a newer console.

I could only hope that such games would be made for the 360.Not everyone playing it is a kiddy gamer, and as their original customer base gets a little older then they may want to look at moving beyond arcade type games.

Wargames/Strategy games are too buggy out of the box to ever make it to a console. Kiddie games don't require the complex calculations of wargames/strategy games. Therefore only PC's will ever be good for wargames/strategy games. ;)

Well why not? I for one am irritated by childish sniping accross PC/console divide. It seems there is no greater insult than telling a fan of some PC game that it is "console port". So what if both versions were developed simoultaneously or if, indeed, the game is an outright port?

Recently, on COD2 boards, some bozos went incredible lenghts to present a "solid proof" that COD2 is developed primarily for consoles. They dissected parts of code and found some console-related stuff there! Wow! There you go - a "proof" your game is console port and thus a garbage!

Those idiots conveniently forgot that indeed, both versions (X360, PC) of this fantastic game were indeed developed simoultaneously, by the same developer, so is there anything more logical than the fact they will share the same code?? Consoles are in fact just specialised (some would say castrated ) PCs. So what's the problem?

I also have to add I don't have a console, nor I plan to buy one. Mostly because no console game really intrigues me, and those that do, exist in PC versions (which are usually superior ). But this can change, and I am open to it. X360 is not even sold officially in my country (perhaps because we're too small or because piracy is rampant).

Problem is most games for consoles are indeed dumbed down compared with PC counterparts, so people expect new games to continue the dumbing down trend, then developers meet their expectations and indeed dumb down their games etc. This vicious circle needs to be broken, by some brave publisher that will show that console games may be more intelligent than that, and still sell well. Either that, or I will continue to play PC games exclusively till I die, which is a valid option I guess

Case in question: upcoming Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Based on available info, console version will be dumbed down to meet the expectations of "console crowd". PC version is developed by some second class developer as an afterthought, and will be released some months later.

That, if true, is just sad. I have no problem with console being their "primary target". Hell I'd buy a X360 to play GRAW alone, if I thought game deserves it. Problem is they a) dumbed down the original game, b) they treat PC version as an afterthought. So both sides of the "divide" lose. Bad!

But it does not have to be like that. Examples of Matrix games that could do well on consoles (X360 included). When I say "do well" have on mind that Matrix games are not top sellers on PC neither, so if they could repeat their moderate success on consoles, and open a small "niche" there that would be a success in itself.

- GG WaW.
- Panzer... Whatever.... this Combat Mission clone Koios works is working on.
- Maximum Football

I am sure there are others as well, but list of Matrix titles is so big it's easy to miss some

Oleg

Same is going on the oblivion boards. And thats not the only ridiculous thing they are conversing about. Its just that oblivion boards like COD2 boards have lots of teenage kids resulting in a very childish and immature topics and debates.

So they are not idiots, they are just kids. Kids are like that.

I have never been interested of consoles because they simply dont have the kind of RPG and strategy/simulation games I like. Also I dont like anime, gamepads or the low resolution on a huge screen (TV). I bought som final fantasy game but didnt play it very far for all the dislike I grew for it.

There is and never has been any reason for me to get a console.

The biggest problem? Budget...

Developing for XBox requires a developer to sign a license with Microsoft and spend a good amount of money just to get the developer kits, etc. Additionally, getting Microsoft to agree on the licnese typically requires that at least 3 big box retailers would carry the game (e.g., BestBuy, CompUSA, Walmart, EB Games, etc.)

Wargames tend to not have enough broad appeal to sustain any type of investment of that size. So, you aren't likely to find it.

The 'Xbox Live arcade' might be a good way to slip a wargame onto the Xbox/Xbox360. I assume the licensing fee for those 'download only' games is far less then your typical console game. Matrix could come up with a lean and fun online wargame with complexity similiar to Nintendo's 'Advance Wars'. Sell it for $5 dollars a pop on Xbox live . . .

For those unfamiliar with the Xbox live arcade:

Direct selling is quite well established now in the PC World. Consoles are exclucively retail games - this means that the developer gets a negligible share of the income realized. You need huge sales to cover development costs.

You also need a retail publisher or you will have trouble getting to the shelves.

I think Matrix would do better to concentrate on what they are good at: PC wargaming. If they ever decide to try a console game, I wish them luck though as this may expand the wargaming market considerably.

I've been thinking about this a lot.

First, retail classic wargames on a console is a no-go. We're too niche.

But I do see potential on Xbox Live Arcade, although there are many obstacles. Now that MS has provided development kits for XBLA, anyone with time, skill and a good idea has the potential to get a game together.

Of course, that's a tall order...an individual with skill who has the time to invest. (And that's not to mention that the number of old-school wargamers on Xbox is probably a little thin.)

Yet we used to have that back in the "old days" when someone would create a game, put it on floppies, shove it in a baggie with some photocopied instructions, and somehow get people to buy it. (The Internet wasn't like it is today, so getting the word out took some doing.) I'd like to think, even if it is naive, that the same spirit exists somewhere out there today with XBLA being the distribution vehicle.

WIth the recent ports of old-school games like Paperboy and RootBeer Tapper showing up on XBLA, I'd love to see ports of classic SSI, SSG or Avalon Hill games make it there. Yeah, the market would be small, but depending on the work involved to port, who knows how much money they could make with those micro purchases?

And then back to someone developing a new wargame for XBLA. Unlikely, but possible if the right person was willing to invest himself in it. Like some of you, I tend to believe that old-school wargames are best played on a computer with a keyboard.

But now that I've got a family, I find it much harder to hide away in a room, playing computer games by myself till all hours of the night. With a console in the living room, it's a little easier to get in game time because it's kind of viewed as a family thing since people can sit around on the couch and participate or just watch.

So, it's a pipe-dream of sorts, but I'll hang onto it for a while.

one the one hand Matrix could incur NO cost and just market games.. for dl to folks who would bur nthem and play, on the gripping hand I personnally do not want to pollute one of the few remaining PC game producers.

I have bought PS 2 just to play KOEI games

There are many great KOEI games for PS 2: ROMANCE OF THREE KINGDOMS XI just came out... This series in fact have some elements of wargames...
Then there is Kessen series, PTO IV (Pacific Theatre of Operation IV) - naval arcade strategy game, good...

I don't care...so long as it doesn't take any resources from Matrix games (i.e. bomband COST money) or any developers/companies away from PC game programming.

as has been alluded to there is XBL Arcade, and there is also a creator's club that has membership for lower prices for both developers and those interested in the games....

The company will do as it will, but I would *love* to see better strategy games for the 360.
