I do not usually post a "review" of games I play, but I did think after having this game for about a week (downloaded, but also ordered physical and am really, REALLY looking forward to getting manual since my computer doesn't have a printer to protect it from my wife) I thought the publishers, and others, might be interested in my thoughts. Why? I am, I think, a good representative of the potential expanded audience for this type game. I play strategy games, Civ, Total War, a lot, but am at best an occasional wargamer. Played TOAW a little, played West Front a little, thats about it. Picked up Shattered Union recently, which I enjoyed and which caused me to realize that the real reason I never got into war games wasn't the tactical aspects, which are very enjoyable, but the lack of a strategy layer, which for whatever reason I seem to need to care much about my battles. Now you know why I bought this war game. And, although I am getting it handed to me (hey, only been a week) regularly, and thank God for Raleigh or I might have quit, it is a very fun and enjoyable game. That said, I think the one thing this game suffers from is its heritage. I know Grognards are sticklers for historical accuracy and all, and I support that fully at the tactical level, but lets face it folks, you are not ever going to accurately portray the dynamics of a national economy/culture. COG is as detailed as I have ever seen and it is nowhere close to a picture of the real world, no? My review is that wedding a conventional tactical war game to a strategy game is an absolutely brilliant concept. However, there is a design decision that must be made at the strategy level of how complex to be, and COG is a little to much so. Shattered Union is almost a joke at this level, but interestingly for me, it is enough to make me care about the campaigns and keep playing despite the lack of support and bugs. But you can't take it very seriously. Total War is deep enough to make you think about the strategy game, but if I am going to do that I for one would like it a little deeper. COG as I said is a little to much for me, but that really is mainly an accessability issue. I can't understand what everything means or what the effect will be. Transparency should be something to strive for in the next effort, which I am most definitely interested in. Great job, guys, thanks.
