OK Dagua landings went in ok today. Going to try a shock attack today see if I can bounce the base.

The defences are light so we will see whether it will fall quickly.

Hydra goes well so far I am concerned I may have undercooked Hydra II at Aitape as I may not have enough troops.

Shot down over 30 tranports todday I am unclear if he is evacvcing or reinforcing or both !!!

I have loaded up 5 Seebees onto some transports at Rabaul they are on there way to Dagua I really think this base will fall quickly.

Assuming it does Hydra III will proceed as soon as transports return.

The operational concept is speed before structure 4th and 6th Aus Divs will load for phase III lets see what happens !!!!

Its a calculated risk but if I take it one base at a time he will concententrate against me at every opportunity I need to bounce him a little

Andy, do you have replenishment TFs, so your carriers don´t have to return to Rabaul to get new ammo and flight points?
Else PzB might bring in his surface fleet and destroy your landforces with naval bombardments.

AS a defence against those nightraids by Lba:
It would possibly be a good thing to make a circle of ASW TF around your mainforce. Night attacks will only be triggered, if a sub/TF spots your TFs in the night phase. Killing those subs before they reach your carriers wouldn´t be too bad. Additionally those night bombers might get after your ASW pickets which would be capped by your fighters (I think nightfighters work the same as normal fighters).

I would attach seabees and some BF30 (with 40 USA squads) into the invasions. The trick is that the soon you have Corsairs with CAP over the base, the soon you can move your carriers to the next objetive.

Thanks guys.

Yes I have 2 larg replenishment TF's unfortuantely AE's only work in 45 so my BB TF's do need to find a port.

I will ensure I kill any subs I didnt realise that was the trigger.

I took a BF to Aitape but not to Dagua.

I wanted to concentrate on assault lift.

Dont forget I have about 300 C47's in range engineers will not be lacking !!!!

I also have tha ability to lay mines. If he really does want to risk surface assets for risky bombardments or commit his reserves to stop and invasion this early so be it.

Dont forget I have 4 other ops all preparaing at moment I want oto suck him in on these early invasions as the troops will not be available to try and block III or IV

Yep, but if the base is really damaged, then you will not able to send the engineers by C47 until the base is repaired. With 4xSeabees per invasion you can quickly repair and enlarge the airfield **and** forts.

When you are behind lv7+ forts then bombardements start to be highly ineffective, and take note, te C47 cannot fly engineer vehicles.

Fair point but at 3 LST's/ 1AP or several AK's its a lot of shipping in my assault echelon I do try to take some engineers along but large allied Ground Units do have enough attached engineers to repair most damage in a few days.

Wouldn´t you need assault engineers to catch this bases fast? I am afraid this will cause some problems if you can´t overwhelm his forces from the beginning.
I know you are short in Assault engineer units, but do you have one in reserve to put it where ever it is needed?

No I had 2 assault engineer regts in total and both are recovering from the Invasion of Maloep.

they have about 30 assault engineer sqds.

If I really get stalled I will assault land one of my USMC Divs which has 100 engineer sqds but that would mean cancelling or postponing Hydra VI so I will play it by ear and see how the attack on Dagua goes.

Every FB and LB has been told to hit Dagua this turn and all 4 BB's are going in to bombard I am very hopefull that Dagua will fall in a single day this is a max effort strike.

If I take Dagua Aitape is just a matter of timeand Hydra III and posibby IV will start to load up.

Its the 9th of February 44 I really want this to be the turning point in SWPAC I am aiming to have AT LEAST 4 more Divisons ashore before the end of the month.

(I am seriously considering accelerating Hydra V and hitting Satawal before Sarmi I will wait and see how Aitape/Dagua goes)

The beauty is that I have planned coherent ops for 4 objectives and can pick and choose which one Launch ;)

As soon as Dagua is secured 9th Aus and 43rd US will rotate back to Aus and begin prepping for Morotoi.

Dagua fell easily I am moving my CV's a little but am getting ready for IJN interference I dont think they will come but you never know. (And I dont need them !!!)

Transports are starting to move back to rabaul to get ready for next phase.

A few will remain to shift 43rd to Aitape. 9th Aus Div will withdraw to Australia

I am attempting an attack at Aitape tomorrow and have ordered full scale air assault. This will be the last day that I keep significant fleet assets on site.

I will be withdrawing all fleet units to re armfor Hydra III tomorrw. GHQ has decided to go ahead with Hydra III and review whether to go for IV or V next after that operation. So Sarmi it is thats where I am going next after that I am really tempted to go hit Satawal next.

I have sent 4 BB's to the west coast for refit I will nneed to send a few CV's back soon as well.

I have a cutoff on CV's of 10 sys once they get above that its back to Pearl or West Coast for refit

That far everything went perfectly. But do you have an large enough aircover over your new bases to protect landunits there from navalbombardments? You should at least leave some PTs there.

Where did all those Aks you sunk come from? Watch out you won´t have the same problems as PzB whose bombers all attacked your Transports while they let your surface TF (almost) unscratched. In your case the KB would hit your carriers after those spent their point (and planes and fatigue) on lousy AKs.

As it looks on your screenshot PzB has some troops in Wewak. Do you think you could make it impossible/dangerous for him to withdrawl from there? I am quite sure he doesn´t want you to let his troops there starve to death. Is it possible to damage the harbor or/and the port so he will take longer to do his evacuation so you can intercept it?

Not sure where the AK's came from. PT's and CL led DD Sqns are on the way to secure the base.

I am LRCAPPING all bases in Southern NG to prevent a pull out if I can

Its hard to keep my fleet protected when its scattered over the whole sea. I need to watch my fuel levels this is eating out a lot of fuel invading so much. I am keeping my CV force in the vicinity of Hydra I and II.

I am getting ready for Hydra III

I am really struggling to cover all my retreating TF's from Aitape/Dagua its annoying but not much I can do.

I am loading up for Hydra III.

PT Boats/ DD's and other light surface forces are guarding the 2 bases.

I have noticed something strange none of my RN ships are date advancing even if I capture Bombay or Karachi the ships wont be available until after the wars end.

Weird !!!

I am expecting some real resistance on Hydra III so after my ships unload I will send my CV's and SCTF's back to replenish before going for it and I will only launch one well covered operation rather than 2 partially covered ones.

OK I dont really know what to say....

PZB sent me his text of the battle but I am a liitle shell shocked (and I havent even watched the return yet just read the combat replay !!!!) I dont understand what he was up to sink a few transports is not worth that risk

Looks like KB got annihalated

I will post PZB's text and my counter response

PZB

"Somehow Andy must have gotten hold of our intentions and turned his entire fleet turned around.

The place was again bristling with destroyers and carriers In perfect position - 4 hexes from our fleet, all enemy carriers reacted 2 hexes and launched devastating counter strikes.

The dreaded uber CAP awaited the KB - ALL attacking and defending ac shot down by Hellcats. ALL carriers disabled or sunk by enemy strike. Not ONE crack pilot got through to hit enemy fleets.

The consequences of this is much worse than Midway and the Marianas Turkey shoot put together. The battle was so one sided that I simply pressed the end turn. Some 600 Jap ac lost against 200 enemy fighters and bombers. The cream of the navy has been destroyed.

I gambled - and lost!

Gentlemen: I'm sorry to have failed you, the Empire has been dealt a mortal blow All praise to Andy and his death machine!

As Wobbly took the consequences of the fall of his Empires crown jewel - so will I.
Realizing that resistance is futile the CinC will offer his appologies and resignation to the Emperor!

Since I'm starting in a new and demanding job as an IT Project coordinator in 2 weeks it is possible that I may use this opportunity to step back. There may be openings for new ambitious commanders to take over...

ok, more comments when I return tonight.

And my response

Oh MY GOD

What were you doing !!! I expected a few light SFCTF's to arrive perhaps with a Battleship or two similar to the Gasmata op aganst Nomad especially if I made it look like my Carriers were withdrawing or possibly some more Betties to strike at transports as they withdrew. (and even then I was expecting you to wait for later more risky opportunities I was evaccing 1st and 9th Aus Divs back to Brisbane for refit so was keeping my carriers about to keep missus betty off)

I never ever thought you would bring in the whole KB (most of my Carriers were down to minimum ops points and only had enught for 2 strikes at most after all the ground attacks.

I just never ever expected you would take this kind of risk that close to my LBA (to some extent you caught me by surprise as all my LBA was on non naval attack unlike last time)

I didn’t have a clue this was coming but was beginning to evac some of the ground forces used in Hydra I and II back to Australia to refit so had increased the cap.

I just dont know what to say he took a hell of a risk for not a large return except to get one over on the allied player.

He did it to me in the gap between marshalls and Solomons with KB and to Nomad at Gasmata this time was one risk to many.

I just dont think the transports were worth the risk !!!!

To be honest I am a little shocked by the whole thing

p.s. in case you hadnt guessed I had no clue that KB was coming out to play I just was trying to avoid losses among my transports and perhaps mousetrap a BB Divison or two.

I hope PZB doesn't surrender but I guess I will understand if he does.

I have offered to go back one day but PZB (on past exchanges) doesnt like doing things like that It still confuses me as to why he risked all for a few transports its that more than anything I am struggling to comprehend he must have known that the Marianas and attacks on the Palaus were coming why risk his precious counter attack weapon ah well

The situation the day before its weird he seems to have way overconcentrated KB into to few TF's I count 4 CV's and 2 CVLs at least in one TF and 4 CV's 1 CVL and 1 CS in another I dont knwo Japanese co ordination but only 130 Zekes on CAP from 8 CV's seems light.

My CAP was set at 70% FYI and 1 CV Fighter Sqn was on night CAP as well as 2 CVL's/ CVE's and Formidables Sqn as well

Why on earth would you offer to go back one day? There was no glitch or gamey outcome: he tried to do a sneak attack on you, failed and lost all his carriers. If your carriers hadn't been nearby (or had been out of op points) and he had sunk most of your transports, do you really think he'd be offering to go back one day because you left your vulnerable ships uncovered? After the slapping around the allies have gotten in this AAR, Feb 1944 is a time when the allies can start counting on things going their way. I think it's a bit cheap for the japanese players to throw in the towel after rampaging around and having their fun for a few years and then giving up. There are victory conditions and with 18 months to go, it might still be hard for you to acheive them as he controls India and China. Many people have commented on how everything in the first year goes the Japanese way and everything pretty much goes the allies' way in 1944-5 (although in the Dude-Zeta 'Hirohito' AAR the Japanese did ambush a bunch of US CV's off the coast of Korea in late 1945...)

Heheh perhaps you are right I dont know but if he is thinking of quitting I want the game to go on.

I do question his overconcentration of carriers and the low level of CAP I wonder if he made a mistake and stood down soem fighters.

As I said PZB probably wont take me up on it as he hates re doing turns as an experiment I would really like to re run yesterdays turn with the Japanese haveing 10 TF's each with one carrier I ssuspect on defence the result would have been very differentwhy he concentrated into 2 TF's is beyond me.

Only 1 CV actually sank (Amagi) and 1 CVL and my carriers have almost no ammo left so I will probably have to withdraw despite my desire to follow up but I suspect he will lose a large chunk of the fleet to damage

The points score before todays battle was 61,623 Jap to 27,857 Allies so still more than 2:1 my chances of getting 2:1 in 45 are remote so I would expect the game to go on a while on points if he doesnt quit
