1/2/42 Crimea 0700

Romanian advance – Soviet delay

Visibility 800 meters, turns 37, weather: snowstorm

15th Battalion is continuing its fight in the Crimean peninsula. Soviet troops are retreating and Oberstleutnant Karl receives orders to slow them, inflict as much casualties as possible and keep them busy while the other units are flanking the enemy and attempting to cut their retreat route.

Support units:

Motorcycle Co “MC Dracul”
Co Hq (MC)
1st Platoon (4x MC)
2nd Platoon (4x MC)
3rd Platoon (4x MC)
Heavy Platoon (4x HMG MC)

Motorcycle Co “MC Tepes”
Co Hq (MC)
1st Platoon (4x MC)
2nd Platoon (4x MC)
3rd Platoon (4x MC)
Heavy Platoon (2x HMG MC)

Recon
2x CKD Praga TNSPE
4x OA wz. 30s
4x OA wz. 30s
Recon Group (13x Scout team)

Artillery
3x RS 81mm mortar
3x RS 81mm mortar
3x M42 120mm mortar
3x M42 120mm mortar

Sublocotenent Delavrancea, leader of Heavy company’s second platoon (47mm ATG, 6 kills) was promoted to locotenent.

Main attack comes from north. Artillery and infantry will penetrate the Soviet defence line with the help of tanks. Then the MCs will speed to enemy rear while the main force turns to south and SE. Câpitan Lazarian will lead the attack. First wave contains câpitan Lazarian, V armored platoon (T3) and rifle company. They’ll come right after the scouts and penetrate the Soviet defence.

In far south the fake advance will try to fool Ivan and cause some trouble to his nerves. Six ACs and platoon of MCs will speed and with the help of artillery try to push to Ivan’s rear somewhere…

Edit: Forgot to deploy one MC squad to south, so the ACs are alone, with couple scouts.

North: First contact with the enemy. Few scouts and OA lost. The explosion of armored car gives the required details of the Soviet positions and sublocotenent Cuza, battalion’s forward observer, counts targets to the mortars. Northern hill is now in Romanian hands.

After the barrages first Soviet infantry platoons are pushed back rather easily. They are too suppressed to give any serious resistance. Some gun opened fire against a truck but missed. Couple ZiS-30s seen and another scouting OA was lost.

South: Armored cars found Ivan’s tank destroyers and one heavy Kliment-Voroshilov. Mechanised reserves?

Attacment: Southern scouting information for mortars.

North: Soviet infantry line is penetrated and remains are fleeing. Three tank destroyers are destroyed but more are found. It seems that those ZiS-30s form Ivan’s second line. No reports of machineguns yet. Second wave (engineer company and rest of the armored company) starts to approach the frontline. Also motorcycles start moving. They will soon reach the frontline and continue forward.

Karl is satisfied: Everything has so far gone almost as planned. The southern armored cars haven’t reached their targets but they’ve found KV-2 and many ZiS-30s and have tied them to south. Also some Soviet mortars are barraging them instead of his main force. Very successful fake attack so far.

Romanian barrages hit the southern KV-2 and destroy it! Now armored cars can prepare to advance. Those ZiSs can be beaten with MGs. They should also be quite suppressed after the barrages that have lasted for ten minutes now. But when first OA starts its advance second KV-2 opens fire against it and forces it to withdraw. More barrages needed.

North: Some motorcycles receive direct fire from Soviet mortars and get very upset. Others continue and find the mortars. Then two Ivan’s heavy MGs open fire and kill two whole squads of riders. They are unable to locate the weapons, only the direction. Fortunately many tubes are now available and Karl orders Cuza to count the targets to that small hill MGs have to be. MCs flank the hill from north and continue forward. Nothing will stop them! Several mortars are destroyed. After the barrages both AAMGs are destroyed and most motorcycles are now in the forest. Oberstleutnant is pleased to hear that. Sharp scout eyes report at least three enemy tank destroyers heading towards the small hill from east.

South: Some Soviet infantry units are found and one OA loses its tires. Others force them back. Then at least couple platoons of infantry attacks the armored cars. Anti-tank rifles take heavy toll and two ACs are out of action. Others try to speed through their defence line and bravely face the tank destroyer.

Attachment: Two companies of motorcycles speed towards the northern forest.

North: ZiS-30s advance without support and are easily destroyed. Behind them in the forest the MCs find several AA guns and AAMGs. Two squadrons of motorcycles overrun them easily with sheer mass. Forest north from the main road is now secured and the MCs are closing the large hill. Infantry is securing the occupied area. They are moving slowly because of the heavy barrages they receive. One rifle squad and HMG were lost.

South: Despite the heavy barrages the enemy tank hunter is closing the ACs. Fortunately the other hunters seem to withdraw. ACs try desperately shoot the incoming ZiS and finally, from 100 meter distance enemy vehicle is damaged and the crew abandons it. After taking good care of the crewmen the ACs continue to southern side of the southest hill. There they found ZiS-30 immobilised and facing ‘wrong’ direction. Too bad…

MC squadrons advance on and around the large hill. Behind the hill an enemy KV-2 is found and few MC men are lost. On the hill are two AAMGs that manage to kill over a dozen MC men before they are finally finished. In front of the hill some mortars are found and pinned down.

South: Immobilised tank destroyer is now without its crew. Situation looks good, until more ZiSs join the fight. One AC is again destroyed and others are in bad situation. The crew of an abandoned ZiS is killed but with a cost of an AC. Two remaining ACs pull back behind the hill and wait the tank hunters to come. At least they still tie up Ivan’s forces.

Center: From the small E-W hill line scouts see the positions of some infantry squads and three tank destroyers. How much they have those things?!? Sergent Florea manages to lurk behind it with his T3 and knock it out with one shot from 800 meter distance. Barrages will soften the others as well as Soviet infantry and then the troops will attack over the small hill and finish the job. That should secure the victory for today.

Rear: Another KV-2 found. Bolshevik headquarters seem to live the medieval times: They are riding on that steel beast to battle! Karl orders T3-armors to move and engage them.

Achtung!! Soviet counterattack is coming! Scouts report that bolshevik infantry is leaving its positions to commit a mass attack to north! Also Panzerjägern are moving. Fortunately they move right in front of Romanian AT-guns and were both killed. Barrages are ordered on the advancing enemy. They will soon climb on that small hill line and face the Romanian armors and some infantry squads. Most engineers are still on their way and are ordered to increase their speed to get to battle in time.

South: One AC left. First MCs are closing from the rear so the enemy is encircled and he probably knows that. This will be over soon.

Rear: Soviet heavy mortar barrage hits the T3 and destroys it. Fortunately sergent Bucurescu’s crew got out. But now there’s only two T3’s to face two KV-2’s. Câpitan Lazarian is coming with his T3 but has still over a kilometer to go before he’s there. So now the MCs and two T3’s have to improvise. First brave locotenent Bibescu finds both KVs with his OA armored car. Then sergent Selavrancea’s MC squad attacks the first beast. Rifles, LMG and grenades can’t even scratch the painting but forces the enemy officers to jump off the board and withdraw to safe. One officer is killed. They were riding on the first KV and when they retreated, they dropped smoke grenade and now only one KV can face the T3 at first. That has to be taken out now! Sergent Florea moves on the hill and from 150 meter distance damages the KV and shaken crew abandons the vehicle.

Ivan’s counterattack is halted by mortar barrages. Now it’s time to counter-counterattack. R-2s and infantry storm over the small hill. Locotenent Alecuzene overrides four infantry squads with his R-2. That causes the mass effect and when other R-2s and Romanian infantry storms over the hill, the Soviet counterattack turns to mass retreat. Lots of men surrender. The harmful 107mm mortar was overrun too Romanian infantry loses only one man in this first effort. Câpitan Lazarian, after hearing that the situation in Soviet rear is ok, joins the attack. Southern tank destroyer gets a lucky hit to his T3 from a 1,5 kilometer distance. The hit only damages the T3 slightly and Lazarian destroys the ZiS-30. But was that last one? MCs find totally routed Soviet KV-2 from the middle and that will be Lazarian’s next target.

seems to be a hot fight which goes forward and backward..and I think your victory is now secure...

Should be much harder to fight with Ronaians than with German paratroopers. maybe, a nice idea for the next campaign..an Italian or Hungarian infantry batallion..

(Zardoz: Thanks! Of course the hardness of battle depends much of the settings. But this hasn't been too easy, so far the Romanian's have got only couple heavy AA-guns and German Pz-III (T3) that can stop heavy armor (T3s with close distance). And I have only three heavy AA-guns and four T3s. Three R-35s that I have, are slow and nearly useless. But yes, this battle belongs to Romanians. )

Ah, now it happened. Karl was already wondering why Ivan’t artillery had been so quiet so long. Now they started to barrage the AT-gun positions. Truck was destroyed. Little harmful, but stupid when there’d be plenty of targets in the front. Ah, no wonder why Ivan is losing the war.

Rear: Second KV drove in front of T3s and sublocotenent Melinte destroyed it with APCR ammo. After that Florea finishes the HQ.

Center: Encircled Soviet forces are collapsing. Infantry, motorcycles and armors are too much for them. Only real threads are those two KVs that have been under constant barrages over a half an hour.

At the short quiet moment between the barrages motorcycle speeds next to one steel monster and shouting ruki vehr they manage to take the crews as prisoners. The surprise is huge when the enemy armor commander introduces himself as kapitan Zhadkowskyi, Ukranian leader of Soviet armor company. As an Ukranian and anti-bolshevik he orders the other KV-2 to surrender too. Seeing their steel cover in enemy hands kapitans Tatlin and Vishnevski decide to surrender with the rest of their men and the battle is surprisingly over more quickly than anyone would have known. Karl is very pleased to hear that among the 100 POWs there are two infantry company leaders and one cooperating armor company leader. Also three KV-2s and one ZiS-30 were taken as warbooty, one KV with minor damage. These are very good news, because Romanians don’t have their own CS equipments. Maybe these can be used later.

The mission was success: Soviet delaying units, two infantry battalions reinforced with Panzerjäger company, were beaten quickly and their main forces are now threatened.

Today’s heroes:
- Armored cars that sacrificed themselves taking the Soviet attention to south.
- MC “Drackul" that completed the encirclement and lost at least 1/3 of its men.

Romanian losses: 151 men, 1 truck, 7 ACs, 1 AFV (8482 points DV)

Soviet losses: 815 men, 18 artillery, 16 AFVs (604 points CD)
