I`m playing my first pbem game (after playing two short scenarios) as Japan and i`ve just recieved some AV Ships.
I have no idea what they are good for and how to use them. Could somebody give me some information about it?

Bye

Thomas

I'm pretty sure they carry floatplanes. I'm at work, so can't check for sure, but I think they provide some avaition support and can carry some fuel.

So you could take your AV, park it somewhere on a beach that isn't manned or occupied, use the AV floatplanes and also fly some Mavis's or Emilys to that hex, and base the mavis's out of that hex.

But I may be wrong, can't remember 100% here at work. You might not have the aviation support on the AV's. But you still have the floatplanes.

They are good for Naval Search and I've been having decent luck using them as ASW patrol.

AVs are also pretty handy at the Shortlands or other front line bases where you use floatplanes for recon (or rufes for cap), but don't want to waste base engineer aviation support on them.

You can also use them as a trip wire at Irau or some other place to base floatplanes. I'm pretty sure Emilys can recon Noumea from there or at least Luganville.

Thanks for the help. I`ll try the trip wire thing. Perhaps my planes will find some nice targets

jap AVs IIRC can use floatplanes while at sea while allied AVs cant. theyre perfect for setting up seaplane bases. all ya gotta do is park an AV at a beach, fly sum seaplanes there and give it sum supplies, poof instant base

Actually, SOME IJN AVs can use floatplanes like carriers use carrier aircraft - probably only Kimikawa Maru and Sagara Maru classes. They are sort of disguised CS type ships (seaplane carriers).

And note that ALL flying boats PATROL PLANES of BOTH sides can operate from a dot location with NO base or aviation support units - IF there are supplies at that BASE location!

In RHS flying boat TRANSPORTS will ALSO work this way - because I classified them as "patrol planes" - but since they are unarmed they cannot actually attack anything. This does mean they can do searches though - and both military and civil flying boats were used that way historically - so it is fine to permit it.

Some fast American AVs are also useful as fast transports early in the game.

From the Japanese perspective the primary function of an AV is aircraft maintenance. They are usually seaplane carriers as well, although I believe the Japanese do have an AV or two with a capacity of only one. It is my understanding that in UV, AVs can not fly planes while at sea. I could be wrong on this point, but when I started playing UV I asked this same question, and the answer then was only a CS could launch and recover seaplanes while at sea. I'm speaking here about how things work within the game of UV itself. From that time I have always played UV following that limitation. I also believe that in UV, AVs do not maintain the larger floatplanes such as Emilys and Mavises, I believe I tried it once and had to finally ship in a base force to get the planes out of maintence. Once again I could be wrong on this point as well, but thats how I've been playing it. AVs only support seaplanes and do not support standard ground landed aircraft. They do support Ruffes, as well as Jakes, Alfs, and Petes. So thats the answer to your question, what are AVs used for. The next question you might ask are what are the seaplanes they support used for? That is a question I've also seen from time to time in these forums. I find seaplanes useful in several different capacities.

Ruffes- Zeros with pontoons. Use them for cap/LRcap on locations without airfields. A friend once told me that the Ruffe pilots were the most elite. However, they are quite limited in number so I don't over expose them.

Alfs- Great range. Use them for naval search. I even take them off the cruisers and mass them at key locations to have good coverage of all enemy approach routes.

Jakes - Good range, carries bombs. If enemy ships are known to be in the area, or if there is nothing with better range available, they can be used for naval search. Otherwise I use them for ASW. For ASW I once again select key locations and then station a squadron or two of float planes there. In this manner I'm able to keep well covered the best operating grounds for enemy subs. I've even used Jakes, loaded on a CS, to make a naval attack on a convoy. Unfortunately, their small bombs were not very effective.

Petes - Very short range. Because of its range limitations its useless as a search aircraft, so therefore I use Petes exclusively for ASW. Placed at an impotant base they can prevent enemy subs from blockaiding to close. Deployed correctly in the Solomon Islands they can harras enemy subs trying to enter or patrol the slot. Deployed at Gili Gili they can cover the straight between the Coral Sea and the Solomon Sea.

You'll soon see that often a key location lacks any type of airfield, or maintenance support. Thats the best place for your AVs. Unfortunately they are easy targets, so I usually try not to over expose them to attack. At the first sign of any nearby enemy activity I send them scurrying back to the rear areas. Also, don't deploy them unescorted, or a sub will get em. One last point, even though AVs are seaplane carriers I try to avoid using them in this role. If the AV gets sunk any planes on board go down with it. For that reason I prefer to transfer the squadrons off the AVs onto the land. The maintenance on the seaplanes is still done, and if I need to move an operation to a new location, I sail the AV there, and fly the planes there, fatigue and wearther permiting, of course.

Wow ! That is a good Summary. That just about sums up both my understanding of the rules ( they are a little unclear on the noted points ),
and the historical tactical uses. The Petes were designed as a short range scout. Generally they were replacing Daves as losses occured, and were better able to defend themselves if needed also.
I just noticed you left out the Daves - these were much the same as Alfs and were used in the same manner.
I think its fair to say that the Daves, Alfs & Petes were unused if the Task force included a Carrier, as Carrier aircraft ( usually Vals or Zeros ) were used for searchs. They are however useful for searches for non-carrier TF's or TF's with no CS ( where Jakes were used ), in addition to your suggested uses.
A word of warning re using them for search in Multiplayer games. If the Allies spot your spotter they can ascertain the type/s of Ships in the area as certain types of floatplanes generally operate from certain types of ships. Eg Dave/Pete can be from a Battleship & Jakes from a CS. All can be from an AV or a Cruiser. Of course the biggest giveaway would be that a Carrier is not present in the TF !

IJN AV's will lauch at sea. An opponent of mine likes to use them as light commerce raiders, which they do quite succesfully in single ship TF's.

Never actually tried to support the big flyng boats with AVs - but as USN AVs supoort Cats just fine, I've just presumed the same to be try for their IJN counterparts.
