Posting to get that LL pic to scroll off the page!

It takes 30 posts to get to the next page, and alas, LL was #1, so we have another 27 or so to go!

Yet another post...

On another topic: i've been re-watching one of my all-time favorite movies Dr. Strangelove.

The one character in the movie that might be considered the "hero" (as much as there was one) was one of Peter Sellers three characters: Captain Mandrake. i had not remembered his rank!

Right - Group Captain Lionel Mandrake...

Dr Strangelove is probably my all-time favorite movie (usually this is my answer... depending on my mood.)

Strange true fact #1 about Dr. Strangelove:

Peter Sellers was going to play the role of Colonel Kong (which was played by Slim Pickens).

Strange true fact #2 about Dr. Strangelove:

Peter Sellers and Stanley Kubrick were having a big argument while on the set of the B-52, which was suspended 15" up - Sellers fell during the argument, and broke his leg. He had not yet filmed the role of Col. Kong, nor that of Dr. Strangelove. This scrubbed his Kong portrayal, and caused him to shoot Dr. Strangelove as being in a wheelchair.

Strange true fact #3 about Dr. Strangelove:

A crew was hired to film footage of the Arctic which was used as rear projection during the B-52 flying sequences for the attack on Russia. While they were flying over Greenland filming these, they were forced down by US fighterplanes after overflying a secret US base.

Strange true fact #4 about Dr. Strangelove:

The scene with Slim Pickens riding the bomb down to the target almost wasn't in the film. The bombay wasn't designed to have doors that actually opened. The scene was saved when the special effect man figured out a way to do it with models, still photography, and a blue screen (with a few other tricks).

Strange true fact #5 about Dr. Strangelove:

The climactic scene was supposed to be a giant pie fight in the War Room. The Studio said they had one chance to film it, but the actors were laughing during the take too much.

Strange true fact #7 about Dr. Strangelove (well, sort of):

James Earl Jones suffered (and to some extent still does suffer) from severe stuttering.

Strange true fact #8 about Dr. Strangelove:

The debut screening for the film was November 22, 1963 - the day Kennedy was killed. The screening was cancelled.

Strange true fact #9 about Dr. Strangelove:

The fact of Kennedy's assasination caused a single word of dialogue to be removed. Originally, Slim Pickens (going over the survival equipment checklist) originally said "Shoot, a guy could have a pretty good weekend in Dallas..." This was redubbed as Vegas, but if you check carefully his lips don't quite match saying "Vegas"...

Strange true fact #10 about Dr. Strangelove:

The mockup of the B-52 (still pretty new in 1962-63) was so accurate (down to the CRM-114 discriminator that plays a central role in the story), that when Air Force officers saw it they turned white with shock.

Strange true fact #11 about Dr. Strangelove:

After being elected President and getting to The White House, Ronald Reagan asked to see The War Room, and was sadly disappointed to find there was no such thing.

Strange true fact #12 about Dr. Strangelove:

Kubrick sued "Fail Safe", another nuclear war movie, ostensibly for plagiarism. In reality, it was really a tactic to make sure that his film came out first. It worked...

Strange true fact #13 about Dr. Strangelove:

The reviewer from the New York Times originally panned the movie. Later, realizing he had completely misjudged the film, he took the extraordinary step of re-reviewing the film, this time praising it.

Strange true fact #14 about Dr. Strangelove:

Tracy Reed, the bikini clad secretary of George C. Scott's "General Turgidson"'s character, is the only female in the movie. She is the pinup in the Playboy magazine that Col. Kong/Slim Pickens is looking at in the first B-52 cockpit sequence. She refused to take off her clothes for this, and shot it in a bikini, with the book "Foreign Affairs" concealing her bikini-clad bottom. She did undo her bikini top for the shot (but still had the top on).

Strange true fact #15 about Dr. Strangelove:

Tracy Reed's mother was quite upset at this pinup shot, apparantly mainly over the book's title!!!
