Although I have the CHS mod running I seem to be missing some art work even though I'm sure I have all the latest files.

Some ships seems till to be old style, and some plane sides are just not there - the Lancer and Lightning for example.

Can someone point me to the place to get a full set of artwork please?

Roger

If you have all of the CHS files you should have all of the artwork. I am not aware of anything that is missing.

Here is where you can download the CHS files:

I've had the same problem - think it might be to do with the database being incorrect.

The aircraft are all there far as I can tell, albeit with US markings. Dixie's made Chinese versions, available at Rogue's. You might want to pick up a RAAF version of the Wirraway while you're at it - available at Spooky's UV section.

I had a slight problem after having loaded CHS 1.06 with the artwork. (Basically, the P-38 F4 recons and P-38F had blank backdrops and one, the F5 I think, had an old RAF hack as a profile.) Prior to this the artwork was fine. I simply started farting around and reloaded the artwork that came with the CHS 1.06 pack. Now all is well. So, the artwork is fine regarding CHS 1.06. Just manually overwrite the aircraft artwork with the files that came with the package and see what happens. Worked for me.

I am going to take a look at the CHS art in the next few days, so if you have any specific aircraft in the CHS 1.06 art package that are not correct, or that you have better versions of, please let me know and I will take a look.

Andrew, talk to "Sarge"! He made some amazing profiles of alot of the early war aircraft.

I'm still missing some and also get the odd 'pink ship' in combat..... I'll make notes next time I play a move.

If you want them I'm in the midst of redoing my earlier profiles. Most of them are British/Commonwealth in SEAC roundels, but there's a few other nationalities.

I'm only in January 1942, by this point I have only found two aircraft whose art is missing: P43A and P38F

Hi Roger, the only thing I can think of is to check and be sure that the "pink" background on the artwork is the correct pink for the ships in question. It looks like it may not be a true pink and is therefore showing up in the combat annimation screen.

Makes sense to me, except the graphics were a download and were not changed? Maybe I just need to download a new set?

This problem was patched a few weeks ago. The patch is in the Rogue page. I think under the JWE folder.

You may have an old version of the CHS file. You may also have put the correct atop.bmp in your art folder but forgotten to change the name of the previous atop.bmp or just remove it completely. If any of these things did not happen your game will reference the file that was in the art folder first(ie. the one you want to replace). Do a sweep of the folder and make sure there are no duplicate/old files.

Alternatively, send me the file you are talking about and I will take a look at it.

The P-43 art is in the current version of the CHS. Ron has put screenies of it in his AAR. The P-38F has been fixed so it sounds like for whatever reason your game is referencing an old version of the CHS palette. Are all the other new CHS a/c there?

Its not the tops, its the side views that are missing. When I check the A_PlaneSide.bmp its a 20th Sept 2004 file.... seems old. Is there a newer vesrion somewhere?

Ok, I found a later version of the plane art and that's sorted. But it raised an interesting question... there are lots of variants of the plane side art around, but how does one put the variants into the game? I can see how to do it with ships as they are all individual bmps, but the planes come as one sheet of combined planes.... I'm puzzled.

Unfortunately, the planesides require cutting and pasting in a picture editor program. Real pain...

That's as I suspected.... what a daft way to do the artwork in a programme! As its exactly the same effective routine as displaying the ship sides you'd have thought they'd have used the same technique.

Its not so much the cutting and pasting as the knowing which to replace with which!

Cheers

It gets much worse. You have to replace the planetops too, and they're about 5,000% more difficult to get exactly right...

Oh, it's not so bad...just be real careful and measure distances in at least two directions as if you were on a land navigation compass corse.

BTW, does anybody know the correct dimensions for the planetops? The sides are 150*60 (or 160*50, I forget), but what about the tops?

It depends on where you get the tops from. The palettes I maintain are complete for the Stock game(and by default the NikMod), CHS, Gary Childress' Mod and Iron Storm 2. Any top you get as a single A/C or a block of Aircraft you will have to painstakingly line up in some graphics software. I don't even do that, it's too hard.

If you want to incoporate "Alernative" or one off Aircraft tops into a personal mod the process goes like this.

1. Get someone to make it for you. Both the art & the alpha.

2. Place the art into the Atop.bmp or Jtop.bmp using a cut and paste function.

3. Do the same thing with the alpha of the aircraft art provided by the artist.

4. Take special care to line them up so that the art displays properly. You will only be able to check this in game. If is looks good then you did it right. If it has a "Halo" or white/black showing underneath it is misaligned and needs to be adjusted.

Unless you are the artist, this is the only way to take pre-made aircraft tops and add them to pre-existing palettes. It isn't easy. That is why I maintain master copies of the tops for all the mods that are out there.

Believe me, I know. I've sweated mightily over my current planetop files, and I've got almost all of them right. It's only my Sea Hurri that's bothering me, but I'm loath to start all over again...

Really?

I just did a Sea Hurricane plane top. I still have to test it, but if it works I can send it to you...

Oh wait - ...you would still be stuck lining it up in your own plane top files...sorry.

What file are you using? Stock with a couple of your own extra Aircraft pulled from the CHS palette?

Yeah... An old stock game file (not yours), "enhanced" with CHS F-7F, F-8F and Sea Hurri, as well as Cobra's P-80. It's a bit of an abomination, and I'd like to put a new one together based on your stock planetops, but that's a bitch of a project.

The Jap file is the same: a stock file, with CHS Ki-83, and Cobra's Kikka and Shusui tops. Those actually work rather well, but the stock tops are still rather clunky, compared to the newer stuff...
